L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine. All the aspects of the question will be analyzed. The history of the crisis in supply, the food practices of limitation under the circumstances will be approached in particular (famine, disease, diet), as the definition and the representations of the thinness and the slimness on the ancient societies, in art and literature. The approach will try to combine, even to confront, the history of mentalities and the study of the realities in Antiquity.
