Sacred science: Learning from the tree
Symposium for the European Society for the History of Science's conference
“Unity and Disunity” has been chosen as the main theme for the European Society for the History of Science's conference that will take place in London on September 2018. Within this framework, Trames Arborescentes has decided to participate by proposing a commented panel that will gather four speakers around the subject “Sacred science: Learning from the tree”. This panel traces the arboreal motif through time, using it as a means to reflect on unity and disunity of interaction between science, art and the sacred.

Cross-borders - practices and figures
Ce sont les aspects sociaux (emploi, configurations familiales), logistiques (transports…) et médiatiques (presse / télévision / internet) du transfrontalier comme ses expressions culturelles qui nous intéresseront particulièrement. En outre, nous voudrions confronter le transfrontalier à d’autres notions, comme le « transgénérique », le « transculturel », le « transmédial », etc. Sans compter que notre réflexion sera méthodologique : le transfrontalier étant un concept en plein développement, il nous faudra nous demander quels problèmes il pose aux différentes disciplines en sciences humaines et sociales.

Meetings, Conflicts, Exchanges: Mediterranean Space in the Middle Ages
Fernand Braudel writes in his The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II: “The Mediterrenean has no unity but that created by the movements of men, the relationships they imply, and the routes they follow” [1972: 276]. The position of the Mediterranean, at the intersection of three continents, has made it a vital location in these movements of men, women and children. These movements continue, sometimes with tragic consequences, to this day. In the Middle Ages, the meeting of peoples and cultures enabled the exchange of ideas, traditions, texts, languages, and things.

AFLiCo JET 2018: corpora and representativeness
With the advent of corpus linguistics, the use of corpora has become central in linguistics. One underlying assumption is that the corpus is representative of the linguistic phenomenon under scrutiny. Of course, corpus representativeness itself is a methodological construct (Leech 2006, Habert 2010): language corpora are tools constructed by linguists, and their structural limitations constrain and condition the validity of linguistic findings.

Of the humanity of the human in the arts
Les journées thématiques « De l’humanité de l’humain dans les arts » voudraient interroger l’idée selon laquelle les arts auraient à exprimer quelque chose comme « la réalité humaine elle-même ». En tant que formes originales de pensée – s’hybridant à la matière, à la singularité et à l’outrage – les œuvres pourraient nous mener vers des lieux de sens qui échappent d’abord à l’objectivité et au savoir. Y aurait-il en ces lieux quelque chose comme « l’humanité de l’humain » ? À l’occasion de ces rencontres inter-disciplinaires, arts et sciences auront à unir leurs forces et croiser leurs méthodes pour tenter une réponse.

En su segunda edición, el congreso internacional Ecos y resplandores helenos en la literatura hispana. Siglos XVI-XXI se concentrará en el teatro. El proyecto nace con la necesidad de recordar lo mucho que ha aportado la Hélade tanto en la literatura española como en la hispanoamericana, deudoras ambas de la tradición clásica, no sólo desde la intrínseca unidad que se crea entre mito y literatura, sino desde la filosofía clásica y la producción poética y narrativa en general.

Ce colloque vise à réunir des spécialistes en langues, cultures et littératures de l’aire romane, ainsi qu’en interculturel et didactique des langues romanes, afin d’encourager et privilégier les échanges au niveau international sur les sujets cités ci-dessus. Les jeunes chercheurs (à savoir les doctorants, de même que les étudiants des 1er et 2e cycles universitaires) sont invités à prendre une part active à l’événement qui serait pour eux une occasion de plus de valoriser les résultats de leurs recherches.

Litany in the Arts and Culture
The litany derives from ancient religious rites. Throughout the ages, however, it spread across many countries and became much more than a mere form of prayer. As has been demonstrated by our recent studies on the litanic forms in European poetry it is possible to reconstruct a cultural and literary map of European regions that traces the level of their participation in and contribution to the litanic tradition. The litanic verse is marked by religious semantics, but it also bears the mark of inter-European divisions, such as those experienced between and within various denominations, countries and nations, as well as the original folk cultures. Therefore, the litany may be of interest to scholars specializing in areas such the emergence of national identities and religious minorities, the crossover between art and religion as well as between music and poetry, the history of liturgy and spiritual life, the cultural exchanges between various nations.

L’université de Liège, l'unité de recherches « Transitions. Moyen Âge et première modernité », le Service d’histoire de l’art et archéologie du Moyen Âge annoncent le lancement de l’appel à contribution pour le colloque international – Iimagopapae. Le colloque se propose d’explorer les différents visages du pape, en encourageant l’adoption de perspectives innovantes et le développement d’études interculturelles.

Literature, politics and language
Cette journée d’étude se fixe pour objectif d’interroger les liens entre langage et engagement politique dans les textes littéraires de langue française. Il s’agit évidemment de considérer la question linguistique dans ce qu’on a coutume d’appeler la littérature engagée mais également de se demander dans quelle mesure l’écrivain s’inscrit politiquement, socialement et éthiquement dans son langage – et peut donc relever aussi d’une forme d’engagement. L’œuvre littéraire, même lorsqu’elle paraît apolitique, n’est peut-être pas exempte d’idéologies : aux choix linguistiques de l’écrivain correspondent des partis pris politiques. Et c’est un des horizons possibles de cette journée d’étude : déceler le politique là où l’on ne l’attend pas.

Autobiography at the crossroads of genders - in the Arab world and in the East
Nous proposons de nous interroger sur la question de l'autobiographie qui demeure de grande actualité : que signifie pour un écrivain le fait de raconter sa vie à l’heure des grandes crises et fractures de notre temps ? En quoi un tel acte peut-il constituer un enjeu majeur dans l’économie générale de son œuvre ? Questions qui méritent d’être examinées à la lumière aussi bien des textes du passé que celle d’aujourd’hui dans les deux mondes : arabe et occidental. Sachant que les modalités d’écriture n’ont cessé d’évoluer, et que les formes de narration et de construction continuent de bouleverser les convenances les mieux assurées de l’autobiographie.

Through what kinds of narrations, symbols and images do the performing arts represent Europe today? How do the different conceptions of Europe coexist on stage? Does the artistic confrontation with Europe and its boundaries contribute to a redefinition of this “territory” or “space”? Is the mediation of European issues via the theatre able to reinforce political consciousness? Can it become the starting point for a new form of social cohesion? What kind of linguistic policy can best respond to the needs of the performing arts? How can we approach the special challenge of multilingual theatre? What are the resemblances and what are the differences between the scientific and the artistic approaches to the broad field that is “Europe”? What could be the modes of cooperation between artists and academics in terms of research, of teaching and transmission at a European level? What are the perspectives for such methodological dialogue?

Le Recueil Barbin (1692) - an anthropology of French poetry
A history of French poetry via the works of poets?
S’ouvrant sur Villon et s’achevant sur Benserade, le Recueil des plus belles pièces des Poètes français, tant anciens que modernes, avec l'histoire de leur vie, dit Recueil Barbin, paru en 5 volumes en 1692 et attribué à Fontenelle, est souvent considéré comme la première véritable anthologie de la poésie française. Plusieurs fois réédité et imité, il est aussi à mettre en relation avec le développement des anthologies poétiques scolaires au cours du XVIIIe siècle. À partir de ce cas, ce sont les enjeux de cette forme particulière de publication qu’est le recueil que nous souhaitons étudier : son économie (marchande et symbolique) particulière, le rôle des recueils dans l’écriture de l’histoire de la littérature et leurs usages, notamment pédagogiques et idéologiques

Crazy beliefs in the 19th century
Engager une réflexion sur les « folles croyances » du XIXe siècle consiste à prendre en compte deux dimensions : d’une part, l'origine des croyances, inscrites dans un certain ordre du monde ; d’autre part, le point de vue de celles et ceux qui, en les examinant de l’extérieur, les considèrent comme irrationnelles. Il s’agira donc, en ayant soin d’éviter tout regard condescendant sur ces diverses croyances, de comprendre pourquoi elles ont été qualifiées de « folles » et dans quel contexte elles ont été soumises à la question au XIXe siècle. Située au carrefour de questionnements socio-historiques et épistémocritiques, notre réflexion s’inscrira tout particulièrement dans l’espace littéraire, qui offre un reflet à la fois enthousiaste et critique des « folles croyances » de l’époque.

La réception d’un certain nombre de supports iconiques et audiovisuels : photographies, films documentaires, docufiction, bandes dessinées, médias… constitue notre objet d’étude. Notre objectif premier serait d’interroger ces différents supports dans toute leur densité et leur complexité et ce dans différents contextes de production et de diffusion. Autrement dit, quel serait l’impact de ces médiations sur les différents publics se situant de part et d’autre de la Méditerranée ? Comment varie la réception en fonction des différents contextes et espaces de diffusion ? Et en quoi les différents facteurs sociohistoriques et culturels influenceraient-ils la réception ?
