Historians are increasingly aware that early modern diplomacy encompassed far more than formally appointed ambassadors and their official negotiations. Rather, numerous actors engaged in international relations, and they did so in an astonishingly wide array of formal and informal positions. They also had a variety of diverse tools at their disposal for lobbying and achieving their various missions. This conference aims to examine a field that a number of historians and art historians have started to analyze in the last two decades, but which has seldom been explicitly delineated or discussed in a comparative fashion: strategies of cultural and public diplomacy in the early modern Habsburg world (1550-1750). Therefore, this conference focuses on the different tactics employed by the representatives of foreign nations and groups – both official and unofficial – in influencing public opinion abroad and, in doing so, attempting to create a beneficial environment for their diplomatic engagements.

Dance on the volcano: Istanbul (1918-1923) - a capital under occupation
Une capitale sous occupation
Bien oubliée au milieu du chaos de la première guerre mondiale, l’occupation d'Istanbul / Constantinople, la capitale ottomane, est devenue un mythe dans l’imaginaire turc : première (et unique) reconquête de la capitale de l’Empire et du califat par des troupes étrangères, les quatre années de présence anglo-franco-italienne sont vécues comme une libération par les Grecs de la ville et, dans un premier temps, comme une insupportable humiliation pour les Turcs : assez vite, plusieurs groupes se détachent, les nouveaux riches collaborateurs qui profitent de la liberté d’une ville franche, une majorité d’habitants qui s’accommodent de la présence étrangère mais pas des privations qui s’installent et les partisans de la révolte en Anatolie, les Kémalistes. Malgré des conditions difficiles, Istanbul connaît une immense activité journalistique, sociale et culturelle marquée par une liberté que permet cette atmosphère de guerre et de fin du monde.

"Riforma e Movimenti Religiosi" Journal n°6 (December 2019)
In the 500th anniversary of the imperial election of Charles V, the journal Riforma e Movimenti Religiosi intends to set up a monographic issue dedicated to one of the events that symbolically mark a rupture in European history, both for the confluence of boundless dominions under the Habsburg crown with its expansion on new seas and new continents and for the onset of the Protestant Reformation. These transformations gave rise to unprecedented links between politics and religion and "long term" consequences in the history of the old continent, destined to survive until today. It was then that myths of the past still alive, such as the authority of the imperial crown and the papal tiara as supreme guardians of the European Christianitas against the expansionism of the Ottoman empire, came to their final decline between bitter mutual conflicts.

An historical panorama of nuclear dissuasion from 1945 to the present day
Dans un monde dont une partie importante renforce la place dévolue à l’arme nucléaire (en Russie ou en Asie par exemple), et où par ailleurs l’Europe a largement perdu sa grammaire dans ce domaine, il est utile de jeter un regard historique sur un certain nombre de débats et d’événements à caractère nucléaire de l’époque contemporaine, et d’éclairer ainsi sous cet angle les questions de politique internationale et de sécurité actuelles. L’objectif de ce séminaire est d’aborder l’histoire de la dissuasion nucléaire dans ses dimensions stratégiques, militaires, politiques et administratives, et d’offrir un panorama général de l’histoire de la dissuasion nucléaire, de 1945 à nos jours.

Cartographies of Southeast Europe
The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

18118-2018: Bicentenary of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte's accession to the thrones of Sweden and Norway
Current state of research
Cette journée d’études entend appréhender l’accession aux trônes de Suède et de Norvège de Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Il s’agira de considérer cet événement à l’aune des renouvellements historiographiques entamés à l’université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès (UT2J) au sein du laboratoire Framespa il y a maintenant plus de dix ans, et d'en élargir le cadre aux autres universités françaises et à celles, plus lointaines, d'Europe du Nord. Les participants sont ainsi invités à replacer la personnalité et l’exercice du pouvoir par Bernadotte dans une historiographie plus large des bouleversements profonds que connaissent les États européens à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècles.

New european maritime challenges: terrorism, Brexit
Ce colloque exceptionnel, initié par l’Association des juristes franco-britanniques (AJFB) s’est tenu à tour de rôle à Greenwich (Londres) et à Paris. Afin d’élargir les thèmes d’actualité traditionnellement abordés entre les juristes de la Marine nationale et de la Royal Navy, avec le concours de l’AJFB, les organisateurs ont souhaité cette année aborder les nouveaux défis maritimes européens, que constituent la lutte contre le terrorisme d’une part, et les conséquences du Brexit d’autre part.

The Humanitarian - a new research field for history in Europe

Dans le cadre de la venue de Johannes Paulmann, directeur de l’Institut Leibniz d’histoire européenne à Mayence (IEG), comme professeur invité, le laboratoire d'excellence (labex) « Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe » (EHNE) organise le séminaire Migrations et mobilités en Europe, XIXe-XXe siècles. Ce cycle se termine le mercredi 13 juin par l’atelier L’humanitaire : nouveau champ de recherche pour une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe, qui réunit le LabEx EHNE, l'IEG, le laboratoire TEMOS (université d'Angers) et le Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/Leiden University). Les participants présenteront des travaux et des programmes de recherche sur la thématique.

The course France & the European Union investigates the political economy of European integration from the end of the Second World War to present day with a particular focus on the role played by France in this development. It considers the incentives that have led an ever-larger group of European nations to form multilateral agreements around a growing range of policies that now incorporate such diverse spheres as defense, economics, and human rights. It then turns to the challenges Europe faces in maintaining the European Union (EU) in the face of growing skepticism among national electorates as well as attempts to undermine the EU (by Russia) or withdraw support from it (by the U.K. and the U.S.).

The implementation of France’s commitment in Central and Eastern Europe in the interwar period (1917-1939)
The aim of this conference is to shed light on joint practical initiatives between France and all the allied countries of central Europe during the inter-war period to concretely build the alliance between the partners. France’s collaboration with the member states of the Little Entente (Czechoslovakia, Romania, Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes) — and of these powers amongst themselves — will be emphasized, but communications on the ties with the other Allied Powers or partners from the region (Poland, the Baltic States and Finland, Greece, Turkey), and even with the revisionist powers (Soviet Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria) are welcome.

En donnant la parole aux historiens, la table ronde vise à faire la lumière sur les différentes formes de solidarité, émergées dans le contexte des mouvements de populations au XXème siècle dans la région de l’Europe centrale et orientale sur le plan communautaire, étatique et international. À partir d’études de cas précis, il s’agira dans le cadre de cette table ronde d’allier analyse historique à l’étude empirique du contemporain. Comment ces expériences, souvent étroitement liées à leurs contextes particuliers et à leurs cadres régionaux, peuvent-elles être observées aujourd’hui et servir de ressources pour l’étude plus générale de la question des migrations ?

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Migration at the service of the development of territories
Les migrations humaines occupent une place grandissante dans les débats de société, mais aussi dans la coopération internationale. Elles sont l’objet de controverses parfois vives, qui amènent à s’interroger sur les fondements de tant de passion et de débats. Largement engagés dans la recherche-action sur les mobilités ouest-africaines, le Grdr, l’IFAN-UCAD de Dakar, l’Université de Nouakchott Al Asriya et Alianza Por la Solidaridad prévoient de mettre en place un forum Migration et Développement, permettant de partager les initiatives de Migration et Développement et l’apport des diasporas au développement de la Mauritanie, et dans la sous-région. Dans cette perspective, le consortium a choisi d’émettre un appel à communication dans le but d’obtenir des propositions de réponses pertinentes en termes de bonne gouvernance des migrations– sont concernées toutes les formes de migrations, celles qui impactent à la fois les terroirs d’origine, de transit et d’arrivée.

History corpuses in the digital age. Electronic editions of royal and princely acts
Le projet de recherche Acronavarre ambitionne de recenser et d’éditer numériquement les quelques 7 000 actes des rois et reines de Navarre conservés sous quelque forme que ce soit et produits entre 1484 et 1594. Il s’inscrit dans une longue tradition d’éditions de corpus d’actes royaux et princiers du Moyen Âge. La validité de ces corpus fait l’objet d’un engouement renouvelé, tant en raison d’un retour aux sources de la part des historiens que du développement des outils numériques. Ces derniers ont bénéficié des corpus existants pour tester des méthodes et des techniques. En retour, les potentialités des nouveaux outils (web sémantique, interopérabilité) obligent à concevoir autrement la constitution de ces corpus. Comment les historiens des époques médiévale et moderne s’en saisissent-ils (s’ils s’en saisissent) ? Quelles sont leurs attentes ? Leurs espoirs ? Leurs déceptions ?

Commitment, Challenges and Crises of International Art Criticism since 1945
The international conference Reframing the (Art) World/Redéfinir le monde (de l’art) aims at concluding an intense three-year research carried out within the frame of the research programme PRISME, hosted at the Archives de la critique d’art (Archives of Art Criticism in Rennes). By following a multidisciplinary approach, the aim of this conference is to reframe a still little-known chapter of cultural history, in order to reconsider art criticism as a historical and epistemological prism in regard to international issues since the second half of the XXth century.
