O colóquio O Gesto e a Crença, organizado no âmbito das atividades do grupo Sociabilidades e Práticas Religiosas (CITCEM), pretende ser uma plataforma de debate internacional e interdisciplinar para jovens investigadores que desenvolvam o seu trabalho no âmbito dos Estudos de Religião. Com o intuito de difundir novas perspetivas sobre as diversas vivências do religioso, este colóquio encontra-se aberto a contributos das mais diversas áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, de modo a desenvolver campos de análise plurais e comparativos.

ISSR's 35th Congress - Thematic session
Small nations of Central and Eastern Europe have provided fertile ground to study the relationship between religion and politics. Too often, however, research on the region suffers from a problematic Orientalism, depicting nationalism in the East as a dangerous ethnic, religious, and anti-modern force. This bilingual thematic session, organized within the framework of the 2019 Congress of the International Society of Sociology of Religions (ISSR - July 9-12 - Barcelona), seeks to understand the relationship between politics and religion “from within” small nations themselves.

In the last decades, the body’s role and its agency have gained new centrality in the analysis of the religious experience. Through its connection with materiality, the religious expression surpasses the spiritual to be understood as a chain of relationships and encounters between bodies, objects and sensory stimuli. Accordingly, under the premise of “routes, transfers and intermediality”, this event seeks innovative readings on subjects that discuss, question and rethink dynamics of circulation, transmission and alterity, through an exchange of ideas and objects of study, which crosses borders and disciplines.

Assessing 180 Years of International Expansion
Following a pattern of itinerant preachers, inherited from the Second Great Awakening context from which their religion emerged, and from New Testament proselytes, Mormon missionaries began as early as June 1830 to go on missions. First, they traveled within the United States and Canada; then, looking beyond North America, they began to take their religion across the world starting with a mission to England as early as 1837. While the movement can do nothing about the fact that it originated in the United States, we hope the presentations in the conference will help determine on the one hand whether and to what extent a numerically “decentered” Mormonism also means a de-americanized Mormonism. On the other hand, we expect the communications to help come to an informed opinion on the place of other cultures in the movement, on how expansion contributes to interaction with local, state authorities and the extent of its localization.

Religious practices, memory and identities in the Greco-Roman world
Les liens du fait religieux avec le social et les conduites de vie constituent, dans les mondes antiques comme pour d’autres périodes de l’histoire, un thème privilégié de l’histoire culturelle. Dans ce domaine, il est possible en particulier de chercher à comprendre dans la diachronie les modalités de l’interaction entre la construction d’identités par les représentations et le jeu des pratiques religieuses, dans une optique d’histoire de la mémoire. Dans un cadre élargi au monde gréco-romain et sur le temps long, il s’agira, selon une démarche visant à aborder les dynamiques rituelles sous l’angle de leurs altérations et restaurations historiques, de scruter les efforts de mémoire dont nos sources - tant littéraires qu’épigraphiques, papyrologiques ou archéologiques - témoignent dans la sphère des pratiques religieuses, en lien avec la construction des identités.

A history of religious criticism of politics (Middle Ages - contemporary era)
Mission traditionnelle des clercs, la prédication légitime leur prise de parole en public, ce qui, longtemps, les a singularisés dans l’espace social. Ce colloque entend explorer la contribution des prédicateurs à la critique politique. La prédication est porteuse, en effet, d’une puissance critique à l’égard des pouvoirs. Le simple fait que le clerc (et l’institution dont il relève) pose son intervention publique comme mission divine ouvre un espace à la contestation, à la subversion, vis-à-vis des pouvoirs temporels.

Le Pôle de conservation des archives des associations de jeunesse et d'éducation populaire (PAJEP) organise une journée d’étude consacrée à l’histoire des mouvements d’Action catholique spécialisée qui s’adressent aux adolescents et aux jeunes hommes et femmes (Jeunesse étudiante chrétienne, Jeunesse indépendante chrétienne, Jeunesse maritime chrétienne, Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne, Mouvement rural de la jeunesse chrétienne). Cette manifestation, qui porte sur la période 1965-1979, est le prolongement d’une première journée d’étude, traitant du même sujet, pour la période antérieure (1945-1965). Elle se tiendra à Paris à l’automne 2019.

Expressions et instruments du politique
Les arts d’Ancien Régime étaient souvent des arts de circonstance, au discours contraint, sans que ce constat doive entraîner un quelconque jugement de valeur esthétique, en ce que ces arts prennent leur sens plein dans un contexte social dont le jeu politique n’est jamais complètement absent. De nombreux indices invitent donc à reconsidérer la littérature de la première modernité dans le cadre social et idéologique qui était le sien et à aborder les choix esthétiques non plus seulement comme l’expression de préférences personnelles mais également comme celle d’un projet lié au groupe auquel l'artiste se rattache. Nous nous proposons donc d’examiner le lien entre le politique et les arts en prêtant une attention redoublée au contexte d’énonciation ou de performance des œuvres, afin de faire apparaître la dimension politique des choix esthétiques même en l’absence de contenus explicitement politiques.

The Agreements of the Holy See with States (19th-21st Centuries)
Models and Transformations, from Confessional States to Religious Freedom
This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

Cet appel à communications est dédié à un atelier de jeunes chercheurs dont l'objectif sera de faire un état des lieux de la recherche concernant la question de la réforme grégorienne, de sa définition et de la compréhension de ses enjeux, dans les espaces francophones et germanophones, dans une démarche non seulement comparatiste, mais aussi transdisciplinaire, puisqu'il s'agira d'interroger l'état de la question aussi bien en histoire politique qu'en histoire du droit, en histoire de l'art qu'en théologie, par exemple. Cet atelier de jeunes chercheurs est organisé par Tristan Martine (université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, CIHAM-UMR 5648) et Jérémy Winandy (universität Hamburg).

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

Catholic secondary education institutions in France in the contemporary age
L’objectif de ce colloque est double. Il s’agit tout d’abord de renouveler le regard sur l’enseignement catholique, 25 ans après le colloque de Toulouse organisé par Nadine-Josette Chaline et Gérard Cholvy, en se penchant sur un niveau d’enseignement relativement délaissé par l’historiographie, à savoir le secondaire. Si les monographies d’établissement abondent, rares sont les publications qui offrent une vue d’ensemble sur le fonctionnement de ces institutions. Le but de ce colloque est donc de contribuer à dissiper les zones d’ombre, tant dans le domaine administratif que pédagogique ou pastoral. Par ailleurs, au terme de leur enquête circonscrite à l’académie de Rennes actuelle, les organisateurs souhaitent confronter le terrain breton avec la réalité nationale, afin de généraliser ou de nuancer les conclusions auxquelles ils sont parvenus.

Religions and the digital world - metamorphoses and conversions
Il s'agit par ce colloque de penser les formes actuelles de la relation entre pratiques numériques connectées et religions – ou le religieux – quelles qu’elles soient, sous forme d’une triple interrogation : qu’est-ce que les religions font avec le numérique connecté, et qu’est-ce qu’elles font au numérique connecté ? Qu’est-ce que le numérique connecté fait aux religions ? Comment les formes religieuses réapparaissent, transfigurées et plus ou moins métamorphosées, dans les espaces numériques ? Comment les pratiques religieuses se trouvent affectées, si elles le sont, par la digitalisation partielle de la production signifiante religieuse ?

À l’occasion des célébrations du 600e anniversaire de la mort de Saint Vincent Ferrier dans la ville de Vannes, l’université catholique de l’Ouest-Bretagne Sud, en partenariat avec les Archives départementales du Morbihan, organise un colloque scientifique le 5 avril 2019. Ce colloque s’adresse principalement aux historiens, historiens de l’art mais aussi sociologues et anthropologues intéressés par la période médiévale comme par la réception de l’œuvre de saint Vincent Ferrier aux époques moderne et contemporaine.

Dans le cadre du projet « Islam subsaharien et comorien en France » financé par le Bureau central des cultes (DLPAJ) du ministère de l’Intérieur, en partenariat avec le ministère de l’Éducation nationale, de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche, nous organisons un colloque qui réunira des chercheurs et doctorants spécialistes de la question, ainsi que des acteurs du champ (religieux, associatifs, politiques). Scholars representing various disciplines are kindly encouraged to submit paper proposals focusing on litanies and their forms and representations in different spheres of culture, including liturgy, literature, music, the visual arts, spirituality, and philosophy. The book Litany in the Arts and Culture edited by Witold Sadowski (University of Warsaw) and Francesco Marsciani (University of Bologna) and composed of selected best papers will be proposed for publication to the editorial board of the Brepols series: Studia Traditionis Theologiae Explorations in Early and Medieval Theology.

Clerical and monastic communities in the Carolingian World (8th-10th)
The Carolingian era has seen by many as a time when the Church became increasingly institutionalised. One of the main aspects of this development, exemplified by the series of councils held between 816 and 819, was a (re)definition of the canonical and monastic orders and the requirement for each community in the realm to comply either with the institutiones canonicorum and sanctimonialium or with the Rule of Benedict. Despite the influential works of J. Semmler or R. Schieffer, however, the real impact of these proposed reforms is still an open question, and from this perspective, the very notion of institutionalisation can also be questioned.

V International Conference on Mythcriticism
The V International Conference on Mythcriticism “Myth and Audiovisual Creation” will analyze the impact of myth in audiovisual creation from 1900 to the present day. The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.
