Emerging presences in Africa: weight, influences, stakes and challenges
African studies in France conferences (REAF - 2020)
Chine, Inde, Russie, Turquie, Brésil, pétro-monarchies… ces diverses puissances communément nommées « émergentes » sont toutes, avec d’autres, intéressées à développer leurs relations avec le continent africain et ses 54 Etats. Que ce soit pour les matières premières, des contrats, des voix lors de votes internationaux, pour tester produits, normes et matériels, diversifier les partenariats commerciaux, diversifier également les investissements, ou encore engendrer un réseau diplomatique international, cet atelier propose d’offrir un éclairage sur l’un des phénomènes structurels les plus significatifs des relations internationales : la projection multifactorielle de ces puissances « émergentes » et son impact sur les pays en développement.

How do we understand the concept of the future? Is it inevitable and shaped by a long sequence of events and interconnected chance occurrences? Or do we conceive of it as something that is determined by our actions and decisions in the present day? Is it a pure potentiality, a promise of a radically different world and yet unimaginable existence? Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

Diplomatic departures: negotiating Britain’s international outreach in the contemporary world
In recent years, the expansion of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office network into new countries has generated increasing interest in the role of the places and spaces where diplomacy is made, in the international outreach of the United Kingdom and in the interactions between state and non-state actors and initiatives in delivering foreign policy objectives. What has received perhaps less sustained attention is the impact of diplomatic departures in Britain and in the British diplomatic network on the rethinking of Britain’s influence and power (hard, soft and smart). These departures - from the more dramatic to the more mundane - will be the focus of this conference, which will reflect on the adaptability and resilience of Britain’s international networks, and on what characterises both British diplomacy and Britain as a diplomatic space.

The archaeology of Morocco: history, reality and perspectives
L’objectif de cette rencontre consiste à tracer le parcours de l’archéologie marocaine depuis ses débuts ; à la fin du XIXe siècle, jusqu’à nos jours. Il y sera aussi question de la réalité et des perspectives de la recherche archéologique au Maroc et des possibilités de préservation et du développement des acquis enregistrés ce qui accorde à notre pays ; aujourd’hui et dans l’avenir, la place qu’il mérite dans l’archéologie mondiale. En marge de cette rencontre, on envisage organiser une exposition portant sur les sites archéologiques majeurs, sur les trouvailles phares et sur les archéologues qui ont contribué au développement de la discipline. Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de rappeler que l’archéologie marocaine dépasse la frontière nationale pour concerner tout ce qui est lié à l’histoire de notre pays, plusieurs dizaines de fois millénaire.

The exit from war in Danubian Europe: a new era? (1918-1924)
Using the Hungarian case as a springboard, and broadening the perspective to the whole of Danubian Europe, the conference seeks to address the following questions: the new social bonds emerging from the transformation brought about by the Paris Peace Conference; social, intellectual and (or) regional impact of changes, conflicts and international confrontations between 1918 and 1924. The conference aims to rise to the challenge of writing comparative social histories of this historical moment.

Il classicismo si instaura laddove una serie di temi, forme, concetti, istanze, diventano di uso comune e continuo, trasversalmente al tempo. L’originalità dunque, più che nel creare novità orfane e fini a sé stesse, sta nell’utilizzare sapienti connessioni tra ciò che si è ereditato, seguendo – in teoria e in pratica – l’esempio dell’oraziana callida iunctura. Per il numero 2/2019 chiediamo agli studiosi interessati di riflettere sul concetto di classico nel riuso di un passato prossimo e di palingenesi nel recupero di un passato remoto e malinconicamente sepolto tra le spire del tempo. Saranno benvenuti gli studi di fortuna dei classici – antichi e moderni – nella letteratura italiana, secondo la chiave di lettura offerta.

The dynasty of architects and artists in the provinces (19th-20th centuries)
Between heritage, transmission and the family of creators
Cette journée d’étude appréhende les processus de création par le prisme de la dynastie. Autorisant l’investigation des logiques à l’œuvre tant dans leur dimension intime et privée que normatives ou fondatrices, la dynastie en tant que suite ou ensemble de personnes issues d’une même famille et occupant les mêmes fonctions, exerçant les mêmes activités ou diffusant les mêmes idées, apparait généralement peu abordée à l’exception des artistes de renom installés le plus souvent dans les capitales européennes. Ce constat constitue une entrée offrant la possibilité de déplacer le regard sur des acteurs et dynamiques encore méconnus, peu identifiés jusqu’alors et parfois même considérés à la marge.

Thinking about Postwar Latin America (19th and 20th centuries)
Special issue of Atlante – Revue d’étude romanes (nº 14, printemps 2021)
The Latin American countries that emerged from the disintegration of the Portuguese and Spanish empires were born in a context of independence wars that lasted years, if not decades, and whose civil character and the violence that they generated, as well as the complexity of the dynamics at work, have been understood in a new light by Latin Americanist historiography in America and Europe. Postwar experiences are quite another matter. Over the past decades in France, and more broadly in Europe, this field has expanded, as shown by innovating studies of 20th century European conflicts, as well as the wars of decolonization, whether in social, cultural or political history, or even international relations. With regards to Latin America, the period following the Cold War, characterized by military dictatorships and civil wars, has been studied in terms of democratic transitions and problems associated with human rights and transitional justice.

Ethnology, prehistory and politics from the late 19th century to the interwar period
Ce projet de colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme ANR/DFG ANTHROPOS 2 (2018-2020), Une histoire croisée de l’ethnologie et de la préhistoire en Allemagne et en France jusqu’aux années 1960 porté par l’Institut Frobenius et Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. Il a pour objectif d’étudier les outils conceptuels forgés par la préhistoire et l’ethnologie, en particulier dans le cadre du tournant organiciste depuis le début du XIXe siècle et de l’émergence de la déclinaison de l’idée d’aires culturelles, de montrer les transferts théoriques s’opérant entre ces deux disciplines, tout en analysant leurs origines et implications politiques dans leurs contextes nationaux.

The televisual spaces of medicine and health in the 20th Century
Medical television programmes, across their history, have had specific relationships to places and spaces. On the one level, they have represented medical and health places: consulting rooms, hospitals, the home, community spaces, public health infrastructures and the rest. As television-producers have represented these places, there has been an interaction with the developing capabilities of television technologies and grammars. Moreover, producers have borrowed their imaginaries of medical and health places from other media (film, photographs, museum displays etc.) and integrated, adjusted and reformulated them into their work.

The theatre of science-fiction: the first elements of cartography
Dans ce numéro de la revue ReS Futurae, il s’agira d’interroger l’histoire de la science-fiction (SF) au théâtre depuis le XIXe siècle au moins et de réfléchir à l’historiographie du théâtre de science-fiction en France et à l’étranger, en interrogeant les catégories génériques actuellement en usage avec lesquelles le théâtre de science-fiction voisine et/ou que le théâtre de SF subsume (utopie/dystopie, post-apocalypse, etc.). Sur la base d’études de cas, l’ambition est d’assembler les premiers éléments utiles à une cartographie du théâtre de science-fiction.

Realism(s) in contemporary Spanish literary fiction (19th-21st centuries)
Le colloque international de la NEC+ prévu en mars 2020 portera sur ce « champ miné » (G. Champeau) qu’est le réalisme pour en considérer les diverses manifestations et l’évolution au sein de la fiction narrative espagnole des XIXe, XXe et XXIe siècles. Par-delà les clichés perdurant à son endroit au point d’en offrir une vision simpliste voire erronée, le réalisme est sans doute beaucoup plus complexe et opaque qu’il n’y paraît, d’autant plus difficile à cerner qu’il est fuyant et que ses contours sont flous, capable de se redéfinir et de se réinventer avec chaque époque et même avec chaque auteur pouvant s’y rattacher de près ou de loin.

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to BlackCounter-Representations, from 1945 until Today
The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

Physical education. Conceptions and debates in the second half of the 20th century
Si la littérature concernant l’histoire de l’éducation physique française est, à l’heure actuelle, étoffée, force est de constater que les biographies publiées ne concernent que rarement des acteurs du second vingtième. Les travaux qui, s’inspirant des thèses de B. Lahire (1998), considèrent les individus dans leur complexité manquent aussi cruellement. Organisées par l'IFEPSA (Angers), l'École normale supérieure de Rennes et le laboratoire VIPS² de l'université de Rennes II, ces journées d’études envisagent de combler ce vide historiographique en étudiant les parcours d’enseignants, de formateurs, de personnalités politiques investis en EPS mais aussi dans la pluralité d’autres espaces sociaux (Troger, 1999), tout en tentant de saisir les dynamiques de pouvoir qui se jouent au sein de ces derniers.

Afro-Asian literary circulation
Writing, publishing and translatin after Bandung
L'objectif de ce colloque est de mettre en évidence et d'interroger les circulations intellectuelles, en particulier littéraires, entre les continents africains et asiatiques depuis la conférence de Bandung. Que celles-ci aient pris la forme de solidarités postcoloniales, comme dans le cas du Afro-Asian Writers' Bureau, ou d'échanges plus récents, elles restent en effet méconnues dans le champ francophone. Parmi les thèmes qui pourront être développés se trouvent notamment les trajectoires individuelles d’auteur·e·s ou d’intellectuel·le·s impliqué·e·s dans ces dynamiques, le rôle des traducteur·rice·s et des traductions dans ces circulations, le rôle du multilinguisme dans la création, les questions relatives à la diplomatie culturelle et au soft power, les réseaux et les solidarités s’étant tissés au cours de l’histoire récente...

Ce projet d’ouvrage collectif est porté par Emmanuel Nal (Mulhouse, LISEC, EA 2310, équipe Normes et Valeurs) et Sylvain Roux (Poitiers, MAPP, EA 2626). Il s’inscrit dans le domaine de la philosophie pratique, commun aux axes de recherche des deux laboratoires et s’adresse à un public d’enseignants, mais aussi de soignants et de manière générale à un public citoyen ; son objet consiste à interroger l’état de l’art des recherches menées sur la vérité dans une finalité d’épistémologie de l’action : que peut-on faire et que peut-on enseigner de la vérité ?

The return of peace in 1918 heralded a troubled period for Modernism. After years of tensions, the borders opened again: D.H. Lawrence travelled to France and Italy in 1919, while Joyce left the safe haven of Switzerland. But the euphoria and cosmopolitan openness of the early 1910s had receded in the aftermath of the horrors of war, as Joyce realised upon returning to Trieste, and personal tragedies compounded the general gloom. These comings and goings, however dire the circumstances, fostered new relations, and the encounters that took place in this period initiated a new phase of literary creation. Our aim will be to analyse the influence of this common experience of personal and cultural wandering in a shared moment of uncertainty, on post-war modernism.

European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968

The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.” We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

La question du design produit aujourd’hui une multitude d’expériences de la notion d’exposition - de la simple présentation d’un objet à une perception scénographie complexe jusqu’à la dématérialisation d’une partie des champs. Ce colloque consistera à interroger cette notion complexe. Que signifie exposer aujourd’hui ? Vendre, présenter, soumettre, guider, attirer, commercialiser, mettre en scène, poétiser, dramatiser, donner du sens ? Toutes ces propositions, complémentaires et parfois contradictoires, sont autant de problématiques qui permettront de saisir les enjeux actuels et l’évolution de cette question.

La revue Implications Philosophiques lance un appel à contributions autour de l’œuvre de Philip Roth. Le dossier entend réunir des textes variés : analyses conceptuelles et littéraires ; récits d’expériences de lecture et études thématiques de portée philosophique. Il s'articule principalement autour des rapports qui se nouent, dans la progression des romans, entre vérité, identité et réel.
