For the second consecutive year, the CHSP (Centre d’histoire de sciences po) European History Seminar explores the social lives of Muslims in early modern and modern European societies. It fits in with the preliminary works of ESLAM (European Societies in the Light of Apolitical Muslims) and is open to established scholars, junior researchers and Ph.D. and master degree’s students in history and social sciences.

At the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF) 2020 conference, one of the panels proposed to break the rules to think about building or rebuilding identity, trauma, relationships to the environment and others in the face of military experience. PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. The EURONEWS Projects and the Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA), in collaboration with University College Cork, present the conference “Exciting news! Event, Narration and Impact from Past to Present”. Papers will discuss the many ramifications of media-induced anxiety and anxiety-induced mediality, engaging the humanities, including history, film studies, literature, folklore, creative writing and adjacent fields intersected by sociology, politology, psychology, anthropology. News Media here include all means of mass communication impinging on daily experience, from books to music, from the social web to films, on multiple platforms and in multiple languages across municipal, state, regional boundaries.

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia
The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach.We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

Delinquency, crimes and repression in History
The question of delinquency, in the most general sense of the term, is particularly complex because criminologists, sociologists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, doctors, lawyers, and historians who have studied this subject extensively have often expressed very different and even contradictory opinions. Difficulties arise as soon as the phenomenon is to be defined. In French law, the word “delinquency” designates all types of offenses. These fall into three categories: transgressions; which constitute very light offenses, crimes which are at an intermediate level, and crimes among including murders, non-premeditated voluntary homicides, and the assassinations, premeditated voluntary homicides. In recent years, in many countries, rape has entered this category of crimes. The Arabic language differentiates between delinquency (“inhiraf”) which designates minor crimes and the crime (“jarima”) which applies to the most serious crimes and offenses.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Néanmoins, les préoccupations contemporaines concernant le changement climatique global ont posé de nouvelles questions urgentes aux historiens du climat : Comment les sociétés du passé ont-elles perçu les périodes de changement climatique rapide ? Dans quelle mesure ont-elles été affectées, non seulement sur le plan économique, mais aussi dans leur réflexion sur la relation entre l'homme et la nature ?

The PhD students in History at the University of Pisa (Italy) are pleased to announce a call for papers for a three-days online seminar (December 10-11-12, 2020) concerning the multifaceted concept of identity and its many dimensions. How are norms challenged by disabilities?
This 9th conference aims to discuss the construction of normality and, more broadly, the system of thought that structures our societies in which being “able” is the norm in the sense of both the most widespread and the most desirable situation. The aim of this critical perspective is therefore to highlight how our societies are structured in relation to the notion of the able individual. While the recent call to build inclusive societies would appear to herald a radical turning point, what is the reality? Have we truly finished with representations of disability that tend towards the negative, the defective or even the tragic? To what extend are the “heroized” figures of disability, omnipresent in the public space, perpetrating the representation of disability as a deviation from the norm?

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land
"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

Intersections between the system of production and the cultural system
FORMA has gone out with a new call for papers for an introductory issue in what will be a five year project exploring the intersection between the system of production and the cultural system. Accepting papers that investigate this subject from a wide array of perspectives, from biopolitics and bioethics, to technology, ecology, education, (geo)political conflicts, and more, this aims to be an interdisciplinary, comparative issue with a focus on the humanities understood broadly.

New Technology-based Metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, characters now invade social networks up to the point where a whole industry of character-camouflage is prompting millions of web users to merge with videogames-like creatures. How can we understand this phenomenon? What social changes does it contribute to shape and to mirror?During the course of an international workshop, researchers from various disciplines are invited to share their experiences and outcomes concerning this phenomenon, which has been stamped kyara-ka, “transforming into a character” (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007). It is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls “an emerging art of self–fashioning”. Based on elaborate techniques of disguises, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices. Exploring all the aspects of this “thingification of humans”, the workshop will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.
