  HoST – Journal of History of Science and Technology - thematic dossiers (2022)

  HoST - Journal of History of Science and Technology is an open access, on-line peer-reviewed international journal devoted to the History of Science and Technology, published in English by a group of Portuguese research institutions and De Gruyter/Sciendo. HoST encourages submissions of original historical research exploring the cultural, social and political dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM), both from a local and a global perspective. Past thematic issues have dealt with topics as diverse as circulation, science communication or the relation between science and politics. Future issues might deal with both established and emerging areas of scholarship. The editors of HoST are looking for proposals for two thematic dossiers to be published in 2022 (HoST volume 16, issues 1 and 2).

  Occupations

  Le présent ouvrage sur l’occupation allemande en 1914-1918, a pour but de mettre en perspective les différentes occupations d’un territoire à travers le temps mais aussi à travers l’espace. Les contributions attendues pourront donc porter de l’histoire antique à l’histoire contemporaine, sans limitation géographique. Dans le cadre du renouveau de l’historiographie des guerres depuis le début des années 2000, les civils occupent désormais une place importante. Ainsi, une véritable histoire sociale des conflits s’est développée depuis lors, que ce soit dans le cadre des soldats au front, mais aussi des civils à l’arrière. C’est dans cette perspective de renouvellement historiographique que le présent appel à contributions se situe.

  TRIP: Tourism and Pandemics

  The goal of this Workshop is to document how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting tourism, including its industry, holiday practices, travel imaginations or tourist’s representations. It will question the transformations in mobility and migrations as the pandemic  leads to the closure of airports and restricts travel: how does that affect privileged ultra-privileged mobilites, holiday practices, their motivations and justifications. We will also question what this pandemic reveals about the manufacture of travel imaginations from the perspective of the transport and hotel industry and travelers, and the evolution of the representations of the foreign tourist, who in a few weeks have gone from objects of desire to subjects of contamination.

  The BBC's reputation for impartiality and independence is one of the cornerstones of its value system, which also underpins its self-declared mission to "inform, educate, and entertain". However, these values have constantly been redefined as several forms of censorship and self-censorship have been applied in the context of conflict with political or economic powers. This means that the role and independence of the BBC as a public service needs to be questioned and the grey areas and silences of the BBC from its creation in 1922 to the beginning of its digital era in 1995 need to be the objects of inquiry.

  Narrating violence: Making race, making difference

  In collaboration with The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention at the American University of Paris, University of Turku invites scholars, students, practitioners, and activists from all fields to take part in the Winter symposium of the Nordic Summer University Study Circle Narrative and Violence. This symposium will explore questions on the production, practice, and instrumentalization of violent narratives about racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual, and political minorities and groups. While multiple theoretical perspectives will be included in both locations, the symposium will have a broader international focus at the American University of Paris and will facilitate discussions primarily pertaining to the Nordic and Baltic sphere at the University of Turku.

  Le 17 janvier 2020, la journée d’étude organisée à l’université Paris Nanterre, intitulée La marginalité comme modèle – Étude critique transdisciplinaire d'un paradigme des marges, réunissant des jeunes chercheur·se·s de diverses disciplines, a convaincu ses participant·e·s qu’un espace était disponible pour l’étude approfondie de ce « paradigme des marges » dans les sciences humaines et sociales. Les exposés des participant·e·s à cette première journée d’étude, jeunes chercheur·se·s en anthropologie, géographie, littérature, histoire et mathématiques, ont permis de dégager un certain nombre de pistes de recherches que nous voudrions explorer dans un séminaire mensuel, dont les deux fondements demeureront l’ouverture disciplinaire et le recul critique et méthodologique sur l’objet de recherche.

  Professional mathematics (16th-19th centuries)

  Cahiers François Viète journal

  Ce projet de volume thématique des Cahiers François Viète est consacré à la mise en pratique de savoirs mathématiques du XVI^e au XIX^e siècle dans divers milieux professionnels. Nous nous intéressons en particulier aux acteurs dont les intérêts sont éloignés des milieux académiques, mais qui recourent, dans leurs gestes du quotidien, à des mathématiques non triviales qui leur sont nécessaires pour résoudre problèmes, tâches ou situations afférentes à leur métier. Une attention particulière est portée à l’interaction entre savoirs et gestes (au sens large) rendue nécessaire soit parce que ce savoir est par essence constitutif du geste, soit parce qu’il en accroît l’efficacité. Nous postulons que cette transposition demande, du point de vue des acteurs, un apprentissage nouveau et peut convoquer des mathématiques originales.

  Disguise, dressing-up and transformations

  Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

  Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and Balkan areas

  In 2021, during the 200^th anniversary of the proclamation of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Department of History and Archeology will hold another international conference on "Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and the Balkan area". The conference will address issues of Greek historiography, such as the Modern Greek Enlightenment in Epirus, Souli, and the networks of Souliotes; operations in Epirus; the battles of Peta, Philhellenes, Plaka, and Kompoti; Lord Byron on Epirus; the strategies of Ali Pasha; the Epirotic networks in Moldovlachia; and the lives and deaths of revolutionaries. Using modern methodological tools and a microhistory approach to conduct systematic research of both new and old archives, the conference will offer original and interesting approaches to an already rich discussion.
