  Heritages values of 20th century architecture: what recognition?

  Critical review and international forward-looking vision

  The heritage values of 20th century architecture, whether they be cultural, social or technical, remain relatively complex to assess, and thus to share, due to lack of perspective and knowledge. The architectural and urban production of the second half of the 20th century was particularly prolific, sometimes remarkable, even exceptional. The energy, ecological transition, the changing habits and lifestyles are leading to the gradual transformation of this built heritage reaching to the end of its life cycle. Since the 1990-2000’s, a movement for heritage making has developed, which leads to many questions relating to possible and desirable developments of these architectural achievements. This  issue of  In  Situ  seeks  to  take a European or international critical perspective on the architecture of the 20th century and to highlight doctrines and positions adopted, practices and examples of schemes, policies or projects.

Les réflexions attendues doivent s’inscrire dans une approche subjective mettant l’accent sur la manière dont les individus et les groupes se mobilisent pour « sortir de la violence ».

  TRIP: Tourism and Pandemics

  The goal of this Workshop is to document how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting tourism, including its industry, holiday practices, travel imaginations or tourist’s representations. It will question the transformations in mobility and migrations as the pandemic  leads to the closure of airports and restricts travel: how does that affect privileged ultra-privileged mobilites, holiday practices, their motivations and justifications. We will also question what this pandemic reveals about the manufacture of travel imaginations from the perspective of the transport and hotel industry and travelers, and the evolution of the representations of the foreign tourist, who in a few weeks have gone from objects of desire to subjects of contamination.

  Le dossier a pour objectif central d'interroger les mécanismes de constitution des expérimentations de transition écologique locale. Il s'agira ainsi d'examiner leurs conditions d'émergence (mobilisations, coalitions, territorialisation...), d'opérationnalisation (organisation, structuration, professionnalisation...), et de stabilisation (viabilité de l'expérience et son éventuelle reproductibilité). Les analyses porteront sur des études de cas, en dépassant la simple description des expériences, afin de participer à une réflexion épistémologique sur le concept même d'expérimentation.

  Power(s) in Palestine

  Over the past two decades a great deal of research on the question of Palestine has pointed to a fragmentation of the Palestinian political landscape, divisions exacerbated by the Oslo Accords. The ensuing establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA), in particular, fostered the emergence of new political dynamics and new sources of power and legitimacy, embodied in the conflict between Fatah and Hamas that has dominated Palestinian politics since 2007. The creation of the PA also encouraged a process of capital accumulation and a restructuring of social classes after 1993. Moreover, the dispersion of Palestinians across the world, the superposition of national and international legal realities and the diversity of actors in the conflict have contributed to the multiplication of sources and resources of power. This complex set of factors has prompted questions regarding new sources, mechanisms and flows of power in Palestine, as well as resultant dynamics.

  Left-wing populism: history, theory and practices

  Les années post-crise de 2008 ont vu émerger un phénomène nouveau en Europe, en particulier sur sa rive méditerranéenne : le populisme de gauche. Celui-ci s’inscrit néanmoins dans une histoire plus longue et une géographie plus vaste, dont le contenu et les limites font l’objet de débats. Par ailleurs, ces expériences populistes de gauche sont la plupart du temps explicitement liées à une tradition théorique particulière, celle d’Ernesto Laclau et Chantal Mouffe et, plus largement, de la Essex School of discourse analysis, qui analyse la formation des identités collectives dans une perspective post-marxiste. Le colloque est ainsi ouvert à toutes les disciplines (sociologie, science politique, histoire, philosophie, anthropologie), à toutes les aires géographiques (Europe, Amérique latine, Asie, etc.) et à toutes les périodes historiques. L’objectif est de dresser un état des lieux, aussi complet que possible, des connaissances, des débats et des perspectives de recherche portant sur le populisme de gauche.

  The BBC's reputation for impartiality and independence is one of the cornerstones of its value system, which also underpins its self-declared mission to "inform, educate, and entertain". However, these values have constantly been redefined as several forms of censorship and self-censorship have been applied in the context of conflict with political or economic powers. This means that the role and independence of the BBC as a public service needs to be questioned and the grey areas and silences of the BBC from its creation in 1922 to the beginning of its digital era in 1995 need to be the objects of inquiry.

  What art does to the city in the Maghreb and the Middle East

  Artistic practices, the expression of politics and transformations of public space

  Ce numéro thématique et interdisciplinaire de Manazir Journal a pour objectif de réunir des travaux explorant le « faire art » dans l’espace public urbain en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen-Orient. Qu’ils soient visuels ou performatifs, les arts urbains (tags, graffitis, street art, fresques murales, performances, spectacles vivants, sculptures ou installations dans l’espace public, etc.) occupent depuis une dizaine d’années, une place grandissante dans la production artistique. La scène du graffiti et du street art s’est notamment étendue, à la faveur des « Printemps arabes » ; chaque année, les inscriptions murales se multiplient, de nouveaux centres d’art urbain apparaissent et des festivals entièrement dédiés au street art s’organisent. Ces initiatives font progressivement de la ville une galerie à ciel ouvert, contribuant au renouvellement des formes d’expression du politique dans l’espace public, et aux transformations de l’espace urbain.

  Narrating violence: Making race, making difference

  In collaboration with The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention at the American University of Paris, University of Turku invites scholars, students, practitioners, and activists from all fields to take part in the Winter symposium of the Nordic Summer University Study Circle Narrative and Violence. This symposium will explore questions on the production, practice, and instrumentalization of violent narratives about racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual, and political minorities and groups. While multiple theoretical perspectives will be included in both locations, the symposium will have a broader international focus at the American University of Paris and will facilitate discussions primarily pertaining to the Nordic and Baltic sphere at the University of Turku.

  Le 17 janvier 2020, la journée d’étude organisée à l’université Paris Nanterre, intitulée La marginalité comme modèle – Étude critique transdisciplinaire d'un paradigme des marges, réunissant des jeunes chercheur·se·s de diverses disciplines, a convaincu ses participant·e·s qu’un espace était disponible pour l’étude approfondie de ce « paradigme des marges » dans les sciences humaines et sociales. Les exposés des participant·e·s à cette première journée d’étude, jeunes chercheur·se·s en anthropologie, géographie, littérature, histoire et mathématiques, ont permis de dégager un certain nombre de pistes de recherches que nous voudrions explorer dans un séminaire mensuel, dont les deux fondements demeureront l’ouverture disciplinaire et le recul critique et méthodologique sur l’objet de recherche.

  History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space

  Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.
