Behind the curtain? Representations of poverty in Europe in the modern era
L’objectif de ce colloque est de rassembler des chercheurs qui ont fait de l'image du pauvre et de la pauvreté dans les arts visuels, l'histoire des représentations et la littérature un sujet d'étude en soi. Il s'agira notamment d'évaluer, à l'échelon européen, l'impact d'une production significative bien que rarement prise en compte, d’analyser son iconographie et d’en cerner le sens, d’en préciser les débouchés, les discours et leurs enjeux (comiques, sentimentaux, économiques, religieux, politiques etc.) à la lumière d’éléments contextuels précis.

Presenting communities in front of the cinema screen
En quoi le spectacle cinématographique fait-il communauté ? Doit-il être considéré comme une instance de division ou un moteur consensuel au sein de celles-ci ? Comment se forgent les publics en situation minoritaire ? Il s’agira de questionner côte à côte, parfois d’un seul tenant, deux types de processus : les phénomènes d’homogénéisation culturelle et ceux de coexistence, forcée ou consentie, entre des groupes multiples au sein d’un même territoire en explorant le large éventail de pratiques collectives politiques et sociales émergeant au sein et en marge des espaces de projection animée.

Il s’agit dans ces rencontres de situer la culture aérienne à l’intersection de plusieurs prismes, et surtoutdans un contexte courant : l’image commune de la guerre aérienne, la notion de géographie quand ellecroise la publicité, le voyageur aérien et sa confrontation avec l’aérogare.

Three-day international conference on the Photobook
This conference is on the social history of the photobook, whether photographer-driven, writer-driven, editor-driven, or publisher-driven. Papers will address: commitment or explicit political engagement; memory, commemoration and the writing of history; materiality (whether real or virtual), and how material form affects circulation, handling, critical responses and the social life of the photobook. Contributors will analyse these topics with respect to the growth of the market for the photobook as a commodity and an object of bibliophilic attention.

Doctoral studies day at the Sorbonne Université contemporary and modern history doctoral school
Les doctorants de l’École doctorale II Histoire moderne et contemporaine de Sorbonne Université organisent leur journée d’étude annuelle. Cette journée se divisera cette année en deux temps principaux : une première demi-journée portera sur une thématique large visant à rassembler les sujets de doctorants issus de différentes périodes et traitera de la question suivante : « Les bons et les méchants. » La seconde demi-journée sera consacrée à des questions méthodologiques autour du thème principal « Les représentations picturales et photographiques en histoire ».

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.
