Picturing Tomorrow: Future-directed Imagination in American Art
How do we understand the concept of the future? Is it inevitable and shaped by a long sequence of events and interconnected chance occurrences? Or do we conceive of it as something that is determined by our actions and decisions in the present day? Is it a pure potentiality, a promise of a radically different world and yet unimaginable existence? Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to Black Counter-Representations, from 1945 until Today
The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

Art and museums and the challenge of (de)colonial questions
Pour les sociétés issues de la traite européenne des Africain(e)s, le fait colonial est ontologique : penser le processus de (dé)colonisation revient à questionner le socle constitutif des identités humaines. En ce sens, envisager la domination qui pèse sur la production artistique en tant qu’expression de ces identités ontologiques, c’est nécessairement s’adresser aux outils et aux technologies qui la dotent d’efficacité. Si le « marché de l’art » et ses différents acteurs nous paraissent être « la place forte » de la construction d’un ordre artistique hégémonique s’adressant à l’ordre social, nous souhaitons non seulement discuter de la pertinence d’une telle assertion, mais aborder les marges et les négociations que les artistes inventent pour contrer, et « résister » à de tels processus.

The Sounds of exoticism in cinema (noises, music, speeches)
Quel bruit fait l’exotisme dans les films ? Comment double-t-on un accent ou traduit-on une spécificité langagière et culturelle ? Comment le cinéma fait-il parler l’Autre ? Comment recycle-t-il et invente-t-il des « clichés sonores » de l’exotisme avec ses bruits, ses sons, ses rythmes ? Et à l’inverse, comment impose-t-il le silence à des corps, des objets, des lieux ? Nous avons exploré pendant un an, dans le cadre de l’atelier « Exotismes en champ-contrechamp. Création, réception et circulation des figures de l’altérité dans le cinéma de fiction », divers allers-retours de l’exotisme, de la Chine aux États-Unis en passant par l’Iran, l’Inde, Taïwan ou la Russie soviétique – ce que nous nommons le champ-contrechamp entre regardé et regardant, entre un « nous » et les « autres ».

Le concept de « migration-s » sera interrogé d’un point de vue à la fois synchronique et généalogique (dans le sens que Michel Foucault lui a donné).

L’interdépendance qui se dessine ici nous invite à repenser l’inspiration comme étroitement liée à la machine, qui non seulement permet techniquement la création littéraire et artistique, mais en est également bien souvent la source. Il s’agira d’étudier ces tensions entre invention et dépendance, entre maîtrise et méfiance, entre fascination et rejet, qui se révèlent cruciales dans la représentation de la machine dans la littérature et les arts.

Ce colloque international et interuniversitaire aura pour objet l'étude de la production documentaire réalisée par des femmes des pays de la péninsule ibérique ou du continent latino-américain. Il a pour visée de repenser, dans une perspective transdisciplinaire, les cadres épistémologiques de l’analyse de l’image documentaire. Il réfléchira aux manières dont les films documentaires, maintenus dans une double marginalité, celle du documentaire et celle due au statut des femmes, ont agi comme des opérations d’intelligibilité du monde.

Études Canadiennes / Canadian Studies 87, décembre 2019
This issue of Études Canadiennes / Canadian Studies will be dedicated to fresh perspectives and new insights on the theme of solitude(s) in Canadian literature. The editors would particularly like to see proposals that explore the linguistic and cultural interaction between the two founding solitudes and the way French and English Canada depict each other (or not) in literature and in the visual arts. In a similar vein, proposals are welcomed on the representation of First Nations, often referred to as Canada’s Third Solitude, with a special interest in works by Canadian Indigenous writers and artists. So too are proposals on the host of other solitudes in the country, which share with Canada’s founding minority communities similar concerns with cultural identity that bring into play issues evolving around recognition of the Other, inclusion, borders and boundaries.

The undisciplined discipline: the challenges of Pop Cultural Studies
This call for paper is for a workshop which it itself included in this year's international symposium of the AFEA (Franch Association of American Studies) which will happen in Nantes, France from May 22 nd to the 24th. This year's main theme of the conference is "discipline/indiscipline." (event for which you can find more information here: http://www.afea.fr/-2019-AFEA-Conference-Discplines-Indiscipline-.html) This workshop intends to address and explore further this binary dichotomy through the prism of cultural studies, interrogating more precisely if the emergence of pop cultural studies is truly something to advocate for. Communications can tackle this issue from a more theoretical standpoint, but they can also deal with more precise case studies which would illustrate how pop culture and cultural studies are both defying disciplinary classifications. Communications can be either in French or in English.

Cinema, power and freedom in Latin America
Partant de l’idée selon laquelle le pouvoir est un phénomène spécifiquement humain, régi essentiellement par la liberté et porteur de sens uniquement à partir du moment où une conscience (individuelle, collective, anonyme) agit, décide et dispose de lui pour le diriger vers des fins déterminées (Romano Guardini, 1963), nous adressons à la communauté des chercheurs ainsi qu’aux cinéastes intéressés le présent appel à participer, dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, au colloque Cinéma, pouvoirs et libertés en Amérique latine. Ce colloque entend interroger la manière dont la production cinématographique et audiovisuelle de l’Amérique latine s’approprie la réalité du pouvoir dans ses diverses dimensions (politique, sociale, de genre, idéologique, subjective, anonyme, etc.) ainsi que dans ses interactions avec des pratiques de liberté (critique, résistances, contestation, détournement, re-signification, etc.).
