  Still on the Map!

  Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land

  "Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

  Travel to, in, and from the Ottoman World and Turkish Republic

  Turkish Journal of History (Tarih Dergisi)

  For this special issue of Tarih Dergisi, the Turkish Journal of History, we invite original research addressing questions arising from travel to, in, and from the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Essays may focus on the place of travel writing in historiography. They may also address any and all aspects of travel. We particularly welcome studies of travel works in any format – books, manuscripts, letters, diaries, journals, reports, log-books, cartography, web-blogs – by Ottoman, Turkish, Arab, Asiatic and African travellers of any period. Essays need not, however, be restricted to conventional travelogues by individual travellers. We welcome studies concerned with modes of travel (pedestrianism, equestrian travel, trains, cars, planes, boats), and with questions involving mass travel (migrancy, nomadism, deportation).

  Ce numéro consacré aux humanités numériques spatialisées a pour objectif de rassembler les communautés francophones de géomaticiens et de spécialistes en sciences humaines et sociales (SHS) qui se servent des méthodes computationnelles en vue d’explorer une perspective spatiale et spatio-temporelle sur des données mobilisées en SHS pour répondre à des questions de recherche. L'histoire, l'archéologie ou encore les études littéraires s'emparent souvent de la géomatique, qui associe également, depuis plusieurs années, des connaissances et expertises issues du traitement automatique des langues, de la représentation formelle des connaissances (ontologies) et de l'intelligence artificielle.

  Life. Instructions and permanent strategies - semiotics and sciences II

  La sémtiotique et les sciences II

  Dans le domaine des sciences humaines, les recherches en design, comme d’ailleurs celles menées en sémiotique ou en philosophie, montrent une convergence autour de la thématique de la vie. Les réflexions sur le bio-design (Pyper 2006) et la biomimicry (Hargroves & Smith 2006), l’intérêt vers les formes de vie (Fontanille 2015) et une sémiotique du vivant (cf. Zinna 2019), ou le passage d’une philosophie de l’être à une philosophie du vivre (Jullien 2015), ou encore à une philosophie des animaux (Jeangène Vilmer 2011) et des plantes (Kohn 2017, Pelluchon 2016), exhibent plusieurs convergences entre ces domaines faisant de la vie un sujet d’étude partagé selon une approche individuelle (le « comment faut-il vivre aujourd’hui) ; les valeurs collectives à adopter (le « durable » comme méta-valeur partagée) ; et les stratégies de permanence pour faire face à l’Anthropocène (ce que nous devons faire en tant que collectifs humains par rapport aux non-humains pour garantir cette permanence).

  Reconfiguring / resignifying the city: urban ecotones in the South

  Un « écotone » désigne initialement une zone de transition entre deux écosystèmes, par exemple entre terre et mer. Le programme « Écotones » (2015-2020) est un cycle de colloques visant à reprendre ce terme traditionnellement utilisé en géographie et en écologie et à élargir le concept en l’appliquant à d'autres disciplines des sciences sociales et des sciences humaines. Un « écotone » peut donc aussi être compris comme un espace culturel de rencontres, de conflits et de renouveau entre plusieurs communautés. Ce colloque interdisciplinaire portera plus spécifiquement sur les villes coloniales et postcoloniales du Sud en tant que dialectique « écotonale » entre lieux et non-lieux (Augé).

  7th biennial conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM 2020)

  Notions of crisis have long charged the study of the European avant-garde and modernism. Throughout their history, avant-gardists and modernists have faced crises, be they economic or political, scientific or technological, aesthetic or philosophical, collective or individual, local or global, short or perennial. Modernists and avant-gardists have in turn continually stood accused of instigating crises, whether artistic or cultural, sensorial or conceptual, incidental or intentional, far-reaching or negligible, representational or other. The very concepts of ‘avant-garde’ and ‘modernism’ are time and again subject—or subjected—to conceptual crises, leaving modernism and avant-garde studies as a field on the perpetual brink of a self-effacing theoretical crisis. The 7th biennial conference of the EAM intends to tackle the ways in which the avant-garde and modernism in Europe relate to crisi/es.
