Decentring Europe: Doing History Otherwise, 1500-present
What does it mean to de-centre Europe in historical research? Can we write a global history, a colonial and imperial history that is not centred on European archives and European analytical categories? How might that change our histories of Europe, and the world? This 2026 edition of the EUI Department of History's summer school takes up a range of such questions as we grapple with why such a de-centring is imperative and what the stakes are for distinct kinds of scholarship.

Philosophical, Literary and Theological Perspectives
This online workshop explores the complex and often ambivalent relationship between violence and the sacred across philosophical, literary, and theological traditions. Far from being external to religion, violence has frequently appeared at the heart of myth, ritual, revelation, and political theology. The event seeks to examine how sacred narratives both justify and contest violence, how apocalyptic imaginaries structure historical consciousness, and how modern thought confronts the persistence of sacralized conflict.

Indian Transnational Families in Northern Ireland by Anik Nandi (Woxsen University)
The Case of Indian Transnational Families in Northern Ireland (UK): Intergenerational Transmission or the Anxiety of a Cultural Erasure
Immigration waves globally have enriched linguistic and cultural landscapes through the spread of Heritage Languages (HL). In Northern Ireland, the Indian community, one of the longest-established ethnic minorities since the 1920s, represents a vital yet often overlooked part of the region's diversity. While local policy focuses on Irish and Ulster-Scots, the linguistic dynamics of migrant families remain under-researched.

Global Cultural Expressions and Practices: Authenticity, Continuity and Reconfiguration
“Journal of Studies in Language, Culture, and Society” (JSLCS)
Cultural practices and expressions are critical to understanding societal transformations, identity formations, and the impacts of globalization. Dominant scholarly narratives have historically privileged Western epistemologies, often marginalizing other knowledge systems and practices. This special issue seeks to reposition the discourse by centering diverse global perspectives on cultural production, expression, and heritage. Contributions are invited that critically examine how notions of authenticity, continuity, and reconfiguration shape and are shaped by cultural practices in various global contexts. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches and empirically grounded studies that explore the interface between tradition and innovation in both local and transnational cultural dynamics.

History – Theory – Criticism Journal, Special Issue 2/2026
This special issue explores the Artificial Intelligence turn in contemporary historiography and its implications for historical knowledge, method, and ethics. Artificial intelligence reshapes core principles of the historian’s craft, from authorship and interpretation to verification and critical engagement with evidence. We invite contributions that examine how large language models and algorithmic infrastructures transform epistemic practices, reproduce or disrupt bias, challenge human interpretive agency, and alter conditions of education and scholarly labor. The issue seeks both critical reflections and methodological innovations addressing this rapidly evolving intellectual landscape.

Fabulous beasts and where to read them
Animals in Byzantine fables, proverbs, and dreambooks
Studies on animals in the Byzantine world are gaining considerable momentum. An increasing number of scholars are exploring and reconstructing zoobiographies through the lens of Byzantine literature. Yet a significant corpus of texts—often unjustly relegated to the category of minora—remains underexplored, despite teeming with animal life. In fables, popular tales, proverb collections, school manuals, rhetorical treatises, and dreambooks, animals play important roles : they drive narrative plots, embody moral and social agency, and serve as crucial vehicles for cultural meaning.
