Researches on an Overlooked Art from Greece to Roman Egypt

Consacrée à l’art méconnu des peintres d’offrandes dans la Grèce antique, la rencontre programmée à l’Ecole française d’Athènes le 6 mai permettra de présenter, durant la session du matin, les recherches menées sous l’égide du Louvre et du C2RMF sur la polychromie des statuettes de terre cuite. La seconde session sera consacrée à une ouverture vers l’Egypte ptolémaïque et romaine, en examinant la question de la transmission et des adaptations de la technè grecque au contexte multiculturel de l’Egypte gréco-romaine.

Framing Autonomy: Ideas and Policy Dynamics in Long-Term Care

Since the 1990s, long-term care (LTC) policies across Western countries have undergone major transformations, notably toward marketization, aging in place, and recognition of informal caregivers. Despite this convergence, the normative and ideational dimensions of these changes remain understudied. Drawing on scholarship about the role of policy ideas in welfare state reform, the workshop invites contributions on three interconnected themes : the influence of international organizations and transnational networks on policy convergence ; the impact of shifting cultural norms around gender, family, and intergenerational solidarity ; and the concept of autonomy as both a normative framework and a practical tool for comparing LTC systems.

L’histoire de l’industrie chimique suscite depuis longtemps l’intérêt des chercheuses et des chercheurs et continue de le faire aujourd’hui. Cet atelier propose une réflexion sur l’état actuel de l’historiographie, y compris ses implications pour d’autres domaines de recherche. Axé sur l’Europe du Nord-Ouest et ses liens avec d’autres régions, l’atelier offre un cadre propice à la discussion des travaux en cours et à l’identification de pistes de recherche futures. Les personnes souhaitant y participer, que ce soit en présentiel ou en ligne, sont invitées à s’inscrire via le lien ci-dessus. Les présentations seront faites en anglais.

In the light of diversity: art, culture, public policy and the digital world

The 2nd International Seminar will focus particularly on culture and diversity, as well as the ways in which the principles of equality are being undermined. The title refers directly to Martin Luther King’s vision of true equality, as expressed in his famous 1963 speech, ‘I Have a Dream’, which called for an end to racial discrimination, by choosing the words and wishes of union. The research highlights the importance of combatting xenophobia and hate speech directed at migrants, refugees, the Romani-Gypsy community, and cultural minorities.

Matérialité et enfermements au Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne : objets, acteurs et expériences

Ce colloque international se propose d’explorer les enfermements à l’aune de leur matérialité. De fait, les objets et les choses se situent au centre des expériences d’enfermement, défini après tout par la présence physique de murs séparant les individus de la société. Outre les murs, les interactions quotidiennes entre les individus enfermés, les autorités et le personnel de l’institution sont largement caractérisées et définies par un large éventail de choses : la nourriture, l’eau, les livres, les graffitis, les habits, l’argent, les lettres, les registres d’écrou, les médicaments, les objets de punition corporelle, etc. De ce point de vue, à la suite du material turn depuis le début des années 2000, les choses – qu’elles soient « tangibles », c’est-à-dire conservées et à la disposition des historien·ne·s, ou « textuelles », soit décrites dans les sources – pourraient offrir une perspective innovante sur l’histoire des enfermements, tout particulièrement concernant les formes de « prison avant la prison ».

Universités et sociétés depuis les décolonisations

Based upon an academic partnership between the Universities of Birmingham in the UK and Leiden in the Netherlands, Universities and Society at the End of Empire and Beyond (UniSoc) uses these two global seats of learning as a starting point to examine the role of universities in the transition from colonial to postcolonial and multicultural societies over the past century. Both institutions have started to reflect critically on this legacy. Building on these initiatives, and on the emerging scholarship on universities in (post) colonial contexts, UniSoc asks how the remit and modus operandi of European universities evolved in the aftermath of empire, opening a neglected entry-point into the wider question of the interplay between the colonial past and the post-colonial present.

The integration of digital humanities (DH) and artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the production of knowledge in African Studies, offering new opportunities for innovative analysis, dynamic visualisation and cross-cultural research. Yet this shift raises urgent questions regarding equitable access, the representation of African languages, and the suitability of methodologies. Current large language models underrepresent African languages, digital scholarly infrastructures remain optimised for English, and digitisation pipelines that produce AI-ready data are themselves shaped by political choices about what to digitise, how to describe it, and who controls access.

Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades: A Multidisciplinary Inquiry

“Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades” seeks to reassess the pontificate of Innocent IV (1243–1254) through a sustained examination of his engagement with the crusading movement. We are pleased to invite proposals for 20-minute papers exploring all aspects of the relationship between the pontificate of Innocent IV and the crusading movement. We particularly welcome contributions that adopt interdisciplinary approaches, including (but not limited to) history, legal history, theology, manuscript studies, political thought and institutional history. Particular attention will be moreover giving the proposals concerning the history of heresy and heretical communities during Innocent’s pontificate, the relationship with the Mendicant Orders, with the Mongol World, the promotion and the business of the cross in Italy.

Translating Comics: Between Bubbles, Cultures, and Constraints in East Asia

The conference examines the challenges of comic translation at the intersection of literature, visual semiotics, and culture. It addresses difficulties posed by spatial text layout, as well as translating humor, puns, cultural references, and typographic effects. Editorial norms and censorship across different cultural contexts are also considered. The focus is on translations to or from Asian languages, particularly Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (manhua, manga, manhwa). Issues of adaptation, localization, and graphic constraints, along with the roles of editors and translators, will be discussed. Case studies of published or ongoing translations will illustrate these challenges.
