  Puppets on screen

  In this symposium project, puppets are considered through their tangible links with a manipulator who could be visible, hidden by a classical stage device (curtain, base...) or acting off-camera, “between the frames” (stop motion). It excludes, at first glance, the 3D modeled figurines, even if they often are mentioned as “puppets”. These creatures, made of foam, wood, paper, and who can be realistic or abstract, are considered through a media existence (television, cinema, web) which has enriched the subgenres of post-war fiction, deals with subjects that could not be filmed in real capture, or offers the opportunity to experiment a great variety of tones and points of view in video practice, without geographical or temporal restrictions. Thus, the symposium will provide the opportunity to explore fields on the margins of research as well as to present the current knowledge on the topic, eventually opening new perspectives in the studies.

  Creative Misunderstanding

  34th World Congress of Art History – Session 15

  In the spirit of the Section’s proposal we can read: "The focus here is on misunderstanding and misinterpretation in the history of art. It intends to further study the problem of the reception of foreign, heterodox and non-traditional cultures." Everybody knows the 19^th century misinterpretation of the cloud and fog representation in the Chinese landscape painting as early impressionistic sign of atmosphere. Another example of a (tragic) mistake from the 20^th century is the destruction of the Montecassino abbey by an American bomber because of a misunderstood verbal instruction. (The American decoder thinks the German word "Abt" (abbey) for the abbreviation of German "Abteilung" (military department).) However, our understanding of the Section title is based on the confrontation of the two concept creativity and misunderstanding.

  Art as Historical Text

  A research workshop of the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) and the Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies and Diplomacy, with support from the President and Rector, Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), Beer Sheva, titled: “Art as Historical Text”, is organized by Avital Heyman, Department of the Arts, BGU. The workshop will be held in BGU on 14-16 May 2007. Topics to be discussed: Pilgrimage and cultic practices in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim societies; construction of cultic shrines; art and historical, social, and liturgical reality (East and West).
