Body, Culture and Identity in Lavapies, Madrid
From the individual to the collective
The objective of this Seminar is to stress the importance of a collaborative and participative way to understand through our senses. We want to explore connections between thinking and action in everyday city experiences, developing “in situ” actions. We consider that the knowledge of the space need space experiences. We aim to develop a collective, community exploration of the vital flow of the Lavapiés area in Madrid altering the classical relationship between artist, landscape and inhabitants. This exploration will allow the construction of an intangible map of audiovisual fragments, photo, phonographs, video art, performative actions. The direct experimentation of space helps us understand it, as well as "to perform it"; it helps us understand the aesthetic and emotional relationships we have with it. In order to get our objectives, urban artists, soundscape experts, theater groups, architects, philosopher, civil and social associations, citizens…will be invited.

Journée d'étude - Études urbaines
Comparing property markets on an international scale
While many scholars compare property markets from the same urban area or compare the way these markets distinguish urban areas within a given country, very few propose an international comparison. And yet, this is a main scientific issue. Such comparisons would provide a new angle for studying metropolitan development as well as its internal trends relating to inequality and gentrification.

Revolution and Contemporary Forms of Critique
Toward « Revolution 13/13 »
This colloquium will constitute a prolegomenon to the seminar series “Revolution 13/13” that will run at the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought (and to the reading group that will be organized at the Columbia Global Centers in Paris) during the academic year 2017-2018. The goal will be to begin to engage a multidisciplinary and polyphonic conversation at the intersection of philosophy, of political science and law, of legal history and the social sciences and humanities, on the concept and on the practices of revolution and social change, or more broadly on the different forms that critique and political resistance can take and have taken in the contemporary world.

Actors and Vehicles of Architectural Criticism
Architectural Criticism 20th and 21st Centuries, a Cartography
This second international workshop takes into consideration the actors and the vehicles of criticism: with these terms it refers to both the agents of criticism (critics, architects, historians, publishers, photographers, institutions, etc.) and the media through which criticism is disseminated (press, photography, exhibitions, etc.). The workshop aims to expand the knowledge about the specific functions of these actors and their networks and to outline their mutual relationships. The four sessions investigate the links between the actors, the media of criticism, and the historical contexts within which they materialize, as well as the cultural, intellectual, and institutional milieus from which they originate.

Architectural criticism between public debate and autonomous discipline
Mapping.Crit.Arch: Architectural criticism XXth and XXst centuries, a cartography
This first workshop will focus on the relationship of architectural criticism with "public opinion" and on the opposite side, its relations to architecture as an "autonomous" discipline. The various nature and degree of such an autonomy will be examined in different historical, institutional and cultural contexts: to what extent is architectural criticism autonomous from social uses of architecture, from the architectural design and its economic production?

Like other regions of the world, South-East Asia has, since the mid-1980s, seen the rise of a new “spirit of capitalism”, linked to the growth of a middle class. Various religious mass-organizations have developed new discourses on wealth and innovative techniques of financing. At their helm, we often find charismatic figures who are responding to the demands of those in search of meaning in an increasingly de-structured modern urban life setting. In doing so, these actors operate on a “spiritual marketplace” characterized by great fluidity and competition. This conference is to look at the different ways through which tensions between religious ethics and economic rationalization are negotiated, both ideologically and institutionally.

Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration

After-Fukushima, a franco-japanese overview
It aims at understanding the political, social and especially legal consequences related to the Fukushima nuclear accident. Its goal consists in developing a global vision of these consequences by comparing how risk is being perceived both in Japan and in France at the occasion of this collaboration between French and Japanese researchers. What are the legal and social policies as regards nuclear power in France and in Japan ? Do both populations perceive differently the related risks? Does the Fukushima nuclear accident change mentalities ? What are the legal consequences of this accident and will they have any impact on international law and French law ? What could have been the legal consequences of such a drama in France ? Trying to answer these questions will enable us to better identify the current perception of nuclear risk both in France and in Japan. -

Interrogation in War and Conflict: between Liberty, Security and Justice
After recent revelations of a « UK Abu Ghraib », with allegations of systematic mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners of war at a British military interrogation centre, and the opening of a formal inquiry, the role of military interrogations has once again been under scrutiny. This seems a particularly opportune time to discuss « interrogation » both as a military event and as a cultural phenomenon. Interrogation raises moral questions, especially for states that see themselves as « liberal », but it can also be approached from many other angles. It is often, for example, a « first contact » between actors who come from different cultures and speak different languages. It sets out to elicit information, but the absorption of that information depends on the conceptual scheme of the interrogator. There are important differences between interrogations done by ordinary soldiers, debriefings by professional intelligence operatives, and interviews that generate forensic evidence. -
