A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History
PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Antibio-addicts? Defining and governing antimicrobial resistance in the age of One Health
The power of antimicrobials is now weakened. Since the “magic bullets” have been introduced in medicine and agriculture in the late 1940s, numerous warnings about the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have been relayed by international agencies, political leaders, scientists and medical practitioners, or various NGOs. These concerns have highlighted the extent and great diversity of antimicrobial use in a world that has proved to be “antibio-addicted”. Recently the AMR problem seems to have been institutionalized and framed in innovative forms.

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia
Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

Islam and Regional Cultures in Pakistan

With the hope of throwing new light on the transformations of Pakistani society, this one-day conference intends to move the focus away from two dominant discourses on Pakistan : that is, on the one hand, the security discourse of political and media circles that reduces Pakistan to a state on the fringe of failure, trying to cope with radical Islam and terrorism; and, on the other hand, Pakistan’s official nationalism, which rests on a unitary conception of the nation that disregards the cultural and religious diversity of the country, stressing instead Islam and Urdu as national unifiers while relegating regional cultures to folklore. This conference hopes to partly fill this gap by inviting participants to illustrate the complex, lived experience of Islam in Pakistan, the identity component of religious practices that do not fit in the dominant norm, and their inscription in local political and ethnic relations. Papers would ideally use first-hand observation and/or analyses of cultural productions to examine circumscribed case studies.

The Social Construction of Illegality
The conference "Norms in the Margins and Margins of the Norm, The Social Construction of Illegality" proposes to reflect on the relations between the dynamics of criminalization and the construction of state powers, on the one hand, and on criminal strategies – legal or not –, moral economies in the illegal spheres, the ploys and tactics of “deviant” groups on the other hand. -

Histoires de l'oubli dans les mondes francophones et anglophone, XIXe-XXIe siècle
Ce colloque propose d'examiner le rapport paradoxal entre l’histoire et l'oubli pour explorer, dans une perspective civilisationniste et comparatiste, les lacunes dans la mémoire collective et les épisodes occultés, perdus ou écartés du récit historique : ces « histoires oubliées » susceptibles de définir la communauté nationale, locale ou diasporique tout autant que l'histoire officielle ou les hauts lieux de mémoire. Comment rendre compte de la persistance de certains souvenirs collectifs et des silences qui entourent d'autres ? L’objectif est d’analyser les processus et mécanismes qui conduisent vers la perte du passé, la non-inscription ou transmission de la mémoire communicative, voire sa suppression, et d'étudier les formes de l'oubli afin de sonder leurs enjeux historiographiques et politiques. -

Quarantième anniversaire de la revue Ethnologie française
Colloque Ethnologie française et Association européenne des anthropologues sociaux
À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de Ethnologie française, revue publiée par l’Institut national des Sciences humaines et sociales (CNRS), La Société d’ethnologie française et l’Association européenne des anthropologues sociaux (EASA) organisent un colloque international les 21 et 22 juin 2011. Afin de mesurer le rôle de la revue dans le domaine de l’ethnologie de la France et de l’Europe, ce colloque international propose de jeter un regard réflexif et interdisciplinaire sur quelques thèmes dont Ethnologie française a été l’initiatrice. Il s’agira de croiser le regard d’auteurs dont l’œuvre a fait date et de plus jeunes chercheurs travaillant dans le même domaine, parmi d’autres, le corps, la parenté, la religion, les migrations, l’identité nationale. Façon de revisiter des thèmes et des objets autour desquels la discipline s’est structurée, qui ont connu d’incessantes évolutions et permettent de mieux aborder les changements contemporains. -

"African Churches" in Europe. Mediating Imaginations
"African Churches" have been present in Europe for some decades now, but their developments have taken a new dimension with the intensification of African migrations to Europe in the 80s and 90s. Beyond their doctrinal and institutional diversity and divergences, these churches have in common to be carried by African populations who all too often remain stigmatized and marginalized at the social, political and juridical levels. From the diverse issues of identity, networks and circulations of religious actors, relations to the public sphere, and gender, contributions to the conference will seek to show how African Christian worlds of Europe are now situated at the very heart of dynamics of reconfiguration of African imaginations of Europe, but also of European imaginations of Africa.
