Approaches and methods
In recent decades, more and more violent conflicts have a religious or cultural dimension and take place between groups adhering to different religious or secular visions of the state and society. When groups with different worldviews are required to share the same (social, political, virtual, economic, or military) space, this can lead to tensions and give rise to violence—ranging from offensive language to physical attacks and open warfare.

IV International Conference of Myth Criticism
Myth and Emotions
Along with rational logic there is an emotional logic, responsible for many actions that we carry out. Myth Criticism tends to tackle mythical stories from a structural, social and historical perspective. However, it often ignores the emotional component. It seems as if the affective dimension, particularly active in our contemporary society, is not considered relevant in the studies of mythology. The Conference will examine the function undertaken by emotions in the structure of mythical stories and in the processes of mythification of characters and historical events. The object of the study will focus on ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary literature and art (since 1900).

Esther (Etty) Hillesum writings are a crucial historical document, as they report on the extreme evil of racial persecutions and life in lagers. They are a reflection on the value and the meaning of life, love and death. The International Conference “Etty Hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014)” (December 9-10, 2014, at Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Italy) aims to assess the works of this important witness from the 20th century.

Le congrès de la Société internationale de sociologie des religions (SISR), organisé par l’Institut d’études politiques d’Aix-en-Provence, réunira quatre cent participants à l’occasion d’une quarantaine de sessions thématiques pour interroger les relations entre religion et économie. Au-delà même de l’occasion conjoncturelle, il est indéniable que les croyances et appartenances religieuses permettent de mieux appréhender les comportements économiques. La variable économique est tout aussi pertinente en amont : le niveau de vie, qu’il soit individuel, relatif à des groupes d’individus ou encore à une société entière, s’avère déterminant dans le choix d’une adhésion religieuse spécifique. -

Religious Community and Modern Statehood
The passage from the Ottoman empire to modern states
The conference aims to explore various aspects of the communal organization in the Ottoman Empire for regions such as Asia Minor, Middle East and the Balkans, and to present the changes that occurred within the religious communities during the 19th century and particularly during the period from Tanzimat reforms until the First World War. Key questions in relation to the modernization process of the Ottoman state and the functioning of religious communities, are a) how does the Sublime Porte understand the process of structuring a modern state with respect to religious communities, b) who is responsible for the modern institutions: the state or the religious communities, c) what is the reaction of the religious communities regarding the modernization process d) why and in what way the religious communities are changing on the light of this process.
