Online Course on the US Original Constitution and its Reception in Brazil

In times of Covid19, the Federal University of Paraiba, UFPB, opens this course to the global audience. Students from the world will have the opportunity to discuss the USA and Brazil's constitutional history from the Founding Era to the end of the nineteenth century with an instructor and Brazilian students of its Graduate Program in Law. The UFPB offers these lectures through the Google Meet platform with a limited number of spots for better development of the studies and discussions amongst participants. The South Atlantic route and the business of the maritime transport of migrants (1870-1960)

The objective is to propose a special issue to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, by contributing for the understanding of the business of emigrant maritime transport from the Belle Epoque until the end of the 1960s. The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

Four years after the foundation of NETCOR at NOVA FCSH, in Lisbon, and after several interdisciplinary meetings and congresses held in recent years in several participating research centres that were the founders of this Network, in Europe and Brazil, the II NETCOR Congress is announced. The theme of this first edition of the Biennal Congress, of an international and interdisciplinary nature, is devoted to labour transformations and aims to discuss theoretical and empirical explanations of the changing nature of labour organization and labour regimes in the contemporary period, from 1850 to 1945.

Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

First issue of new journal “Early Modern Low Countries”

In the spring of 2017, Early Modern Low Countries (EMLC) will publish its first issue. The new open access journal will appear in two installments every year, containing high-quality, original scholarship for an international readership on any aspect of the history and culture of the Low Countries between 1500 and 1800. The successor of two well-reputed Dutch-language journals (De Zeventiende Eeuw and De Achttiende Eeuw) EMLC aspires to publish papers by scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds working anywhere in the world.

What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.

The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989

This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949

The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

Revisiting the Historical Connections between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a Global Context

The workshop posits that after 1945, the interconnectedness of questions of nutrition, agriculture and poverty became a central aspect of international governance, and that issues of food and agriculture posed particular challenges to national sovereignty. We thus approach the history of FAO as a history of the ideas and practices of economic and social ‘development’ embedded in local, regional, national, and global contexts and with implications on all these levels. We propose to examine the process by which the FAO facilitated the institutionalisation and globalisation of debates on agricultural production and food security, how it integrated previous international and transnational networks, and how it navigated the tension between agrarian commercialisation and rural welfare during the Cold War and Decolonisation.

Ressources publiques et construction étatique en Europe

Fiscalité et dette publique (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècle)

Les trois premières demi-journées du colloque seront consacrées à l'analyse de la mobilisation des ressources publiques qui a accéléré la construction des États médiévaux et modernes en Europe occidentale. Les arbitrages entre modes de financement par la fiscalité, le crédit et l'émission monétaire, les orientations liées aux divers types de régimes politiques, l'émergence des premiers marchés financiers pour les titres de dette publique fourniront trois axes thématiques majeurs. La dernière demi-journée sera consacrée à : « ressources publiques et construction européenne, dettes souveraines et gouvernance de la zone Euro ». Les intervenants s'interrogeront sur la récurrence des questionnements entre hier et aujourd'hui et l'impact de la crise des dettes souveraines sur le processus d'intégration européenne.

Stratégies des empires ibériques (1800-1936)

Notre intention dans cet atelier est d’analyser les stratégies que les empires ibériques déployèrent au cours du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle pour gouverner les colonies tout en les faisant varier en les adaptant. En pleine époque de l’impérialisme et passé la première guerre d’indépendance coloniale, la métropole espagnole adopta une série de mesures libérales à Cuba et Porto Rico. Peu avant, la création d’un Ministère d’outre-mer en tant qu’organe autonome d’administration mit en évidence l’intérêt renouvelé pour la gestion des territoires coloniaux. La création de partis politiques et l’incorporation des Antilles au système parlementaire métropolitain constituent des changements fondametaux sur lesquels nous devrons nous pencher.
