The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?

Europe 1815-1848

In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

IX Conference of Spanish, Belgian and Dutch historians. In honour of Professor Hugo de Schepper

This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16^th to the 18^th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries

Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles

This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

The Democratic State in Trans-Atlantic Context

Scholarship on the state has been oddly parochial, focused on the domestic and national scales to the exclusion of the international and transnational. This habit of presuming the nation-state as a bounded container is particularly entrenched in work on the state, understood in Weberian terms that are conceptually insulated from democratic practices. Democracy, in turn, is often taken as an already defined category of regime rather than a quality of political action as it plays out in state-building. By taking both democracy and the nation-state for granted, scholars leave unspecified what should be empirically explained. Even comparative analyses of welfare states, which should be more cosmopolitan, tend to reify national differences by naturalizing the comparative framework rather than by historicizing the mutual constitution of systems of social provision. During this conference, we hope to advance a transnational conversation with scholars from the U.S. and Europe to interrogate the development of the democratic state in trans-Atlantic context.

Crisis, Idea and Policy Transformation

Experts and Expertise in European International Organizations, 1973-1987

Crisis and crisis experience were central to Western European history between the first oil crisis of 1973 and the creation of the Single European Act. European international organizations (IOs) such as the OECD or the EC played a crucial role in debating and addressing manifold dimensions of crisis, shifting discourses and transforming policies at national and European level. These IOs drew heavily on experts and their expertise in debating and managing crisis and seeking solutions for structural problems. Organized jointly by the University of Portsmouth and Maastricht University on 30-31 January 2014, the workshop will investigate who were the experts active within IOs and what type or form of expertise they had and draw upon in agenda-setting, policy deliberation and decision-making. It will also discuss the role of experts in policy-making in the respective IOs and their influence on the development of the policy area concerned.

Democracy and Technology. Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st century

Public debate, social media demonstrations, participative assessment, technocracy and transparency: these are just some of the issues on the growing list of multiple and evolving interactions between technology and democracy in Europe since the middle of the 19^th Century. The sixth Tensions of Europe conference aims historicizing and exploring these complicated links in long-term perspective. It will address key contemporary issues such as the democratization of technology and the vulnerabilities of technological democracies. The conference will close the ANR funded project « Large technical networks and democracy: innovations, practices and interested parties in long-term perspective, from 1880 to the present day ». The conference will also feature the official presentation of the Making Europe book series, more than 40 panels, and of course the traditional untraditional Tensions events – this time in Parisian style!

Le processus d’intégration européenne s’est déroulé dans un contexte international caractérisé par la présence d’un réseau d’organisations de coopération multilatérale, avec lesquelles les Communautés européenne ont interagi depuis les années cinquante, en concluant de nombreux accords de collaboration. Or, si l’interaction avec des organismes régionaux tels que l’OECE/OCDE, le Conseil d’Europe ou l’OTAN, a été étudiée de façon relativement approfondie, les relations avec le système des Nations Unies avec son ensemble d’agences spécialisées, de Fonds, programmes et instituts, sont beaucoup moins connues.
