Beyrouth, la reprise

L’appel à propositions interroge la catastrophe et la reprise, nécessaire, de la tragique explosion du 4 août, à Beyrouth. La reprise s’oppose, par définition pour Søren Kierkegaard, à la pure répétition — impossible — du même. La reprise est recréation sous un autre visage, en assumant les aléas de la mémoire, ses failles, ses imprécisions. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est déjà se trouver sur un terrain miné, à ramasser des éclats de visages, de sens, de chronologie rompue. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est aussi la repriser, en suturer l’architecture, l’histoire, l’héritage, la sauver de sa propre béance. L'appel, interdisciplinaire, s'ouvre à l'image (photographie, caricature, bande dessinée, illustration, dessin, collage) et au textuel (textes en prose, poèmes, réflexions).

North American Interiors at the Turn of the Twentieth Century: Beyond Historicism and the Arts and Crafts

In a series of articles from the early 1900s, American Architect and Buildings News, Architectural Record, and The Artist introduced their readers to a recent development in Europe: the emergence of a “so-called ‘new art’” – Art Nouveau – in design, its products ranging from buildings to decorative objects. Though the origins, formal characteristics, and future direction of the "new art" were ambiguous, it represented a deliberate effort to break with historicist conventions in design. The periodicals described developments overseas which did not generally affect North American practice. Historicism, whether in the form of the Beaux-Arts, the Colonial Revival or other revivals, and the Arts and Crafts remained dominant in upper-class interiors. The purpose of this session is to examine exceptions to these general trends – commissions, clients, decorators, artists, architects, networks and exchanges with the contemporary European developments or traditions outside Europe, with areas of influence outside the prevalent sources of design.

This two-day symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity. Multidisciplinary discussions will allow us to examine the terms of territorial imagery in Dutch visual culture, and their links with the formation of a national myth in the Early Modern Dutch Republic.

This conference is on the social history of the photobook, whether photographer-driven, writer-driven, editor-driven, or publisher-driven. 5eme rencontre international du Réseau Européen d'Histoire de l'Architecture, à Tallinn, juin 2018

This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. The European Postwar and Contemporary Art Forum (EPCAF), a worldwide forum for scholars working on postwar and contemporary european art, is pleased to announce its Second June Colloquium on June 17th 2017. In addition to an informal EPCAF roundtable, EPCAF will have the honour of welcoming Paula Barreiro-Lopez (Universidad de Barcelona) for a Keynote Address during which she will present her latest book, Avant-garde, Art, and Criticism in Francoist Spain (Liverpool University Press, 2017). The 2017 Session of EPCAF June Colloquium will be dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Centre Pompidou with a series of six papers that address both the history of the institution and some aspects of its contemporary transformation.

The research project Mapping.Crit.Arch: Architectural criticism 20^th and 21^st centuries, a cartography, funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, aims to develop a field of research on the history of architectural criticism, from the last decades of the 19^th century to the present day. It is based on an international network of scholars, whose interests cover the history of architectural criticism at various levels and through different approaches (including architectural theory, history of preservation, historiography of architecture, history of architectural periodicals and of criticism, history of photography).

From Xenakis to the present: the Continuum in music and architecture

Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20^th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. We propose to examine where we are today in terms of the concept of continuum, both in theory and in practice. An interdisciplinary approach will enable us to evaluate the relevancy of this notion, comparing and contrasting it with other methodologies, during this international conference.

Soit dans les palais royaux et princiers, les châteaux nobles, les résidences patriciennes, les hôtels de ville ou les chapitres de cathédrales, maintes salles d’apparat du Moyen Âge et de l’Époque moderne sont munies de programmes héraldiques. Alors même qu’ils font partie intégrante de l’arrangement de ces salles, ceux-ci ont été cependant peu étudiés jusqu’ici. Ce workshop a pour objectif de proposer une première vue d’ensemble de ces programmes héraldiques des salles d’apparat par travers le Moyen Âge et l’Époque moderne en Europe et d’en proposer une première typologie.

Towards a graphic culture: studying drawing

Drawing seems nowadays to know unprecedented expansion and to invest all domains of the expression and the communication: book industries, cartoons and animation movies, video games, corporate communication… And we indeed face kind of a paradox: widely present, drawing seems almost impossible to define and some philosophers like Jean-Luc Nancy even invite us to accept the "unthinkable" nature of the drawing. The international conference we organize on June 15^th and 16^th of this year in the villa Finaly of Firenze (Italy) does not intend to adopt similar position. Without wishing necessarily to produce a definition of the drawing, we intend to progress towards its understanding.
