Ancient Armenia at the Crossroads

In honor of Arkady Karakhanyan

The aim of the conference is to exchange recent archaeological and environmental data obtained in Armenia and to bring together the points of view of researchers from various disciplines in the fields of Human Sciences and Environmental Sciences. Particular attention will be paid to the theme of traffic flows: the movement of people, in connection with the evolution of the environment; the circulation of techniques and know-how and the circulation of raw materials and objects.

The Regional and Transregional in Romanesque Art and Architecture

The categorization of Romanesque by region was a cornerstone of 20th-century scholarship, and the subject is ripe for reappraisal, particularly in relation to transregional and pan-European artistic styles and approaches. In addition to a review of the historiography of the subject, individual papers are concerned with the strength, durability, mutability and geographical scope of regional styles, the extent to which media are important, the assumption and transmission of forms and motifs, the conditions that give rise to the development of transregional styles and the agencies that cut across territorial boundaries.

Archives that matter

Digital infrastructures for sharing unshared histories in the colonial archives

2017 marks the centennial for Denmark’s sale of the colony “The Danish West Indies” to the United States, today the US Virgin Islands. For this occasion, archives in Denmark are undertaking a mass-digitisation of their archival records from St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Ghana and the transatlantic enslavement trade. The symposium brings artists and researchers together across geographies to collaboratively innovate and develop “critical fabulations”, transgressive decolonial methodologies and artistic research approaches to open up the digital archives.

Symposium at the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision

During the past decade, a massive body of audiovisual heritage has become digitally accessible, on websites of archives, through initiatives such as Europeana.eu and EUscreen.eu, and on platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo. The symposium Video Tracing and Tracking in Digital Humanities Research explores the possibilities of using fingerprinting and video tracking technologies in this area in general and for research into the circulation and appropriation of digital audiovisual heritage in particular.

Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. The European Postwar and Contemporary Art Forum (EPCAF), a worldwide forum for scholars working on postwar and contemporary european art, is pleased to announce its Second June Colloquium on June 17th 2017. In addition to an informal EPCAF roundtable, EPCAF will have the honour of welcoming Paula Barreiro-Lopez (Universidad de Barcelona) for a Keynote Address during which she will present her latest book, Avant-garde, Art, and Criticism in Francoist Spain (Liverpool University Press, 2017). The 2017 Session of EPCAF June Colloquium will be dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Centre Pompidou with a series of six papers that address both the history of the institution and some aspects of its contemporary transformation.

Unlocking Sound and Image Heritage. See, Listen and Share

SOIMA 2015 International Conference

The conference is based on the collective experience of ICCROM’s multi-partner programme on Sound and Image Collections Conservation (SOIMA), which organized five capacity building initiatives (four international and one regional) in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America during 2007-2014. Building on SOIMA’s global insights from bringing together 89 sound and image professionals from 55 countries to date, the 2015 conference is making a strong case for looking beyond professional and institutional boundaries, actively listening to each other and sharing strategies to ensure a safe and creative tomorrow for sound and image heritage. The conference aims to promote the sound and image heritage held by diverse and lesser-known cultural and research institutions, as well as individual collectors.

Rehabilitation and Re-use of Modern Movement Architecture

Seminar gathering in Lisbon international experts in architecture rehabilitation and urbanism of the Modern Movement. The seminar organized by Docomomo International will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on the 27th of March. In the last decades, the architectural heritage of the Modern Movement appeared more at risk than during any other period. At the end of the 1980s, many modern masterpieces had already been demolished or had changed beyond recognition. This seminar about Rehabilitation and Re-use of the Modern Movement Architecture aims at bringing together inspiring viewpoints about this global problem.

Medieval Manuscripts in Motion 2015

This International Conference aims to follow up the initiative "Medieval Europe in Motion: the circulation of artists, images, patterns and ideas, from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast", held in Lisbon in 2013 and organized by the Institute for Medieval Studies of the Nova University Lisbon.With the aim of creating academic, scientific and organizational synergies, this second edition will be organized in collaboration with two other international institutions, the University of Cantabria and the University of León. The main scientific of the event, as it was the previous conference, is to analyse the phenomenon of circulation, motion and mobility of people, forms and ideas during the Middle Ages. This time, however, the kind of works under consideration will be illuminated manuscripts. This three-day Conference aims thus to conduct a critical and constructive revision of research on Iberian Book Illumination in the Middle Ages, proposing new questions to be discussed.

Global Art History and the Peripheries

Established in 2009, Artl@s is a project of a Spatial (Digital) history of arts and letters, providing scholars with the tools and support needed in order to expound their narratives and qualitative evidence with spatial representations and quantitative analyses. The Artl@s team organizes an international conference in partnership with the École normale supérieure, the Institut national d'histoire de l'art and the Terra Foundation for American Art, inviting researchers to gather and develop a removed and well-thought out approach to the question of the peripheries in art history.

Performing Documentation in the Conservation of Contemporary Art

Contemporary art conservation requires a re-assessment of the distinction between the work and its re-configuration in documentation. Although documentation is crucial for the survival of many contemporary works of art, it is never neutral: all approaches, formats, media and systems have their own inherent affordances and blind spots and always transform what they document. Furthermore, in process-centered, technology-based or performative artworks in particular, we often can no longer make a sharp distinction between an original work and its subsequent documentation or replication: documentation is part of the work's very core.

Our goals for the conference are to raise awareness of the artistic exchange and mutual influences between the Han Chinese arts and the arts from different cultural backgrounds in China itself, as well as beyond its geographical and cultural boundaries. The aim of the COST Action IS1007 Symposium is to give an overview of the policy contextwhere culture meets sustainable development, and of the strategies and processes whichguide culturally sustainable development at local, regional, national and transnational levels.Moreover, during the Symposium the participants will identify and establish “thematicclusters” on various topics of cultural sustainability, which will serve as forums for futurecollaborative work. The goal of the COST Action "Investigating Cultural Sustainability" is to increase understanding of and determine the role of culture in sustainable development based on multidisciplinary principles and approaches.
