Les musulmans : une histoire de l’Europe, XVIe-XXIe siècle
Le séminaire d’histoire de l’Europe du Centre d’histoire de sciences po (CHSP) est pour la deuxième année consécutive dédié à l’étude des musulmans dans les sociétés européennes aux époques moderne et contemporaine. Il s’organise autour du projet ESLAM (European Societies in the Light of Apolitical Muslims) et s’adresse aux chercheurs confirmés, aux jeunes chercheurs et aux étudiants en master en histoire et en sciences sociales.

Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760
Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

The Max Planck Research Group III investigates the emergence and development of the system of post-Tridentine global governance of the Catholic Church in depth from an interdisciplinary perspective over an extended period of time. It will do so by analysing the activity of the Congregations of the Council, the dicastery responsible for appropriately implementing the Council decisions in the entire Catholic world. We are now looking to recruit as soon as possible (but no later than 1 April 2019) two doctoral students who will develop a doctoral thesis preferably focused on the history of the Congregation of the Council in the early modern period (XVI-XVIII century).

XXVth Annual Forum of Young Legal Historians
The conference continues the long-standing tradition of the Association of Young Legal Historians of providing a general meeting spot for young scholars working on the history of law. It seeks to transcend communal boundaries to further research and to stimulate the exchange of ideas. Ever since her foundation twenty-five years ago the Association has been able to attract a loyal and returning group of young scholars from many countries across Europe and the wider world. In 2019, it is our honour to welcome you to Brussels.

6th Colloquium on Crime and Criminal Justice in Early Modern and Modern Times
The colloquium provides an open forum for discussion, debate and the presentation of PhD-, postdocand other research projects related to the history of crime and justice in the early modern and modernperiod. It aims for an interdisciplinary exchange between scholars of a wide range of subjects suchas history, legal history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, humanities, political science and others. Core issues that will be addressed are various forms of crime and delinquency, law and normativity, criminal prosecution and justice, punishment and social control as well as sources and methodicalapproaches. We also invite contributions of scholars who would like to enter into a dialogue with researchers from the field of crime and criminal justice even though the mentioned topics would onlyconstitute a part of the respective projects. The colloquium focuses on elites in a political, economic, social or cultural context, their role inthe administration of justice and the legal system as well as specific forms of deviance and delinquency of such groups.

Publicity, space and time (Europe, 17th to 19th century)
Although bankruptcy was a rather exceptional situation in the life of a merchant, it has explanatory power for routines of economic stakeholders, for their space of experience and their horizon of expectation. We can therefore use the irregularity of failure as an indicator of regularities. Considering the long, non-uniform and unsteady transition from merchant capitalism to industrial and financial capitalism, we suggest to start a dialogue between modernistes and contemporanéistes. The workshop focuses on the various forms of contextualizing business failure and puts forward three major research axes: Covering and Uncovering: Secrecy and Publicity; Economic Space and Area of Jurisdiction; Temporal Narratives of (In)Solvency.

As a result, reflections on the relations between economy and society are increasingly present in the public debate, notably from the perspective of a more radical critique of the very basis of the capitalist system.

Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries
Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles
This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

Criminal Law and Emotions in European Legal Cultures
From the 16th Century to the Present
This two-day conference seeks to historicize the relationship between law and emotions, focusing on the period from the sixteenth century to the present. It aims to ask how legal definitions, categorizations and judgments were influenced by, and themselves influenced, moral and social codes; religious and ideological norms; scientific and medical expertise; and perceptions of the body, gender, age, social status. By examining the period between the sixteenth century and the present day, this conference also seeks to challenge and problematize the demarcation between the early modern and the modern period, looking at patterns and continuities, as well as points of fissure and change, in the relationship between law and emotions.

Mercaderes, arrendatarios, juristas, escribanos de grandes instituciones, secretarios, labradores ricos, élites locales, maestros gremiales enriquecidos, etc. son individuos con un estatus social ambiguo. Uno de los objetivos de este coloquio es reflexionar sobre esas personas que no nacieron nobles, en sentido estricto, pero que tampoco eran exactamente plebeyos o que se encontraban en la frontera entre uno y otro grupo. En el ámbito de un proyecto desarrollado en Portugal, centrado en los familiares del Santo Oficio, se va a realizar un seminario en la Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma (EEHAR-CSIC) durante los días 16 y 17 se septiembre de 2015. Se seleccionarán un total de 8 comunicaciones a las que se unirán 4 ponencias invitadas, con el objetivo de reflexionar, en común, sobre las características de los “grupos intermedios” en la Edad Moderna, así como sobre las cuestiones metodológicas de su estudio.

Borders Past and Present. Materiality, Practices and Concepts
In recent years, the study of borders and boundaries has attracted the curiosity of scholars from different disciplines and informed a rich and diverse literature. With notable exceptions, most publications on the subject relate however strictly to their sub-field and discipline, paying only fleeting attention to the work produced in neighbouring disciplines. The aim of this workshop is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars from the European University Institute and other European universities and research institutions who study borders and border-related phenomena from different perspectives.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)
Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine
Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.

International Graduate Conference
Practices of critique are intertwined with normative orders in manifold ways. They contain and refer reflexively to critical contentions, and they can enable as well as suppress critique. In this context it is essential to reconstruct the theoretical foundations of critique and power structures as well the practices in which they are instantiated. Three aspects are crucial: firstly concrete forms of power and their application, which always emerge from a tension between normative claims and solidified systems of rule; secondly the purview of justice as the foundation for critical rationale; thirdly the aspect of aesthetic representation. Such themes shall be addressed from multidisciplinary perspectives at the international graduate conference “Practices of Critique” on 5-7 December 2013.

French History is seeking contributions, in French and English, for a special issue on "Animals in French History," edited by Christopher Pearson (Liverpool) and Peter Sahlins (UC Berkeley). Proposals for articles should bring together theory and original empirical research that draws on new ways of studying animals and animal-human relations in France since the Renaissance. -
