  Crossroads of Critique: Axel Honneth and the Frankfurt School Project

  Sciences Po 7th Graduate Conference in Political Theory

  We are happy to announce that the seventh annual Graduate Conference in Political Theory is going to be held in Paris on June 6-8, 2019, entitled Crossroads of Critique: Axel Honneth and the Frankfurt School Project. We welcome contributions from graduate students of political theory across the board and intend to accommodate various approaches (analytical, historical, normative, and critical) as well as contributions from related disciplines (philosophy, social theory, etc.). We also aim at geographic diversity, in that we shall try to foster a substantial academic dialogue between young political theorists from Europe and their peers across the world. Over recent years, the Sciences Po Graduate Conference has established itself as one of Europe’s foremost venues for an international exchange of ideas among graduate students in political theory.

  In high medieval Europe, conflict took a number of different forms, from large-scale battles, such as disputes over crowns, power and lands, to more local disputes over inheritance and property. In the absence of well-developed administrative structures which could limit conflict, cultural conventions, rituals and behavioural norms evolved to moderate violence within the elite community.

  By all measures, Germany played an overwhelming role in the development of philology and linguistics during the 19th century. This ascendancy rests on the transmission to other national academies of theoretical constructs and views, methods and institutional practices. On the other hand, German philological and linguistic ideas, methods and institutions were not constituted in isolation from the rest of the world : Transfers to the German-speaking world must also be taken into account.

  Maritime Ivories in Western Europe, 900-1500

  Dans l'histoire de la sculpture sur ivoire, les mammifères marins ont souvent été éclipsés par l'éléphant, vu comme un ivoire plus noble dont le morse ou la baleine ne seraient que des succédanés. Mais cette vision historiographique n'est pas sans faiblesses. Non seulement la chasse au morse joua un rôle significatif dans l'expansion européenne vers l'Ouest, mais le commerce de ces ivoires s'étendit jusqu'au monde islamique voire à l'Extrême-Orient. Cette session du 52^e International Congress on Medieval Studies, sponsorisée par le National Museum of Scotland, vise à étudier les ivoires maritimes sous tous leurs aspects, collecte du matériau brut, commerce, ateliers et valeur symbolique.

  The Allied Occupation of Germany Revisited

  New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949

  The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

  Les missions allemandes : leur liquidation et leur résilience 1914-1939

  Ce 36^e colloque du CREDIC s'inscrit dans le cycle des commémorations de la « Grande Guerre ». Quel a été son impact sur les missions chrétiennes allemandes, catholiques et protestantes, et sur les Églises et les œuvres locales suscitées par leur action ? Dès le déclenchement des hostilités les personnels missionnaires de nationalité allemande ont dû cesser leurs activités et quitter leurs postes. Leurs possessions et leurs instruments de travail ont été séquestrés ou réquisitionnés. La liquidation des missions allemandes n'a pas empêché l'héritage allemand de se faire sentir et parfois même d'être reconnu par les nouveaux maîtres des territoires. De plus, les sciences missionnaires allemandes déjà très avancées avant la guerre ont continué à se développer ; elles ont été entendues dans le débat international sur la mission à travers les grandes conférences missionnaires mondiales (Jérusalem 1928, Tambaram 1938) et dans le développement de la pensée missionnaire catholique. On peut parler de résilience des missions allemandes au-delà et à travers leurs tribulations.

  The Wisdom of the Ancients. Jerusalem rediscovers Athens

  The German-Jewish Revaluation of Ancient Philosophy

  Between 1920 and 1930, a group of young, brilliant Jewish researchers studied in Germany under the direction of Cassirer, Husserl and Heidegger. Leo Strauss, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas, Hannah Arendt, Jacob Klein, Eric Weil, Günther Anders, and others were forced by the advent of Nazism to escape from Germany and to wander around the world. All these thinkers strove to question the historicist assumption, according to which Modernity is to be seen as progress in respect to the Ancient thought. In their studies, they found new ways to listen to the voice of the Ancients, by revaluating them in the context of the crisis of modern thought. Starting from Athens and Jerusalem, the symbolic roots of western culture, these philosophers problematized and revitalized the quarrel between Ancients and Moderns over again.

The CES invites proposals for panels, roundtables, book discussions, and individual papers that consider the many potential futures emerging from the European crisis. We encourage proposals in the widest range of disciplines, and, in particular, proposals that combine disciplines, nationalities, and generations.

  Ding, ding, ting. Objets médiateurs de culture. Espaces germanophone, néerlandophone et nordique

  Le colloque propose de croiser les fils de deux traditions théoriques, la théorie des transferts culturels, élaborée par Michel Espagne et Michael Werner dans les années 1980, qui a donné lieu ensuite à divers prolongements (histoire croisée, recherche sur les phénomènes de circulation, de réseau, d’interculturalité, d’hybridation…), et celle des Material Culture Studies.Il s’intéressera aux objets matériels, d’un point de vue historique, culturel, ethnologique, anthropologique, littéraire, linguistique, philosophique ou esthétique, dans leurs manifestations concrètes et leurs représentations discursives, visuelles, plastiques, ou textuelles, dans la mesure où ces objets circulent entre plusieurs cultures, entre deux pays (ou plus) des espaces néerlandophones, nordiques ou germanophones, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

  If today, freedom can be conceived as a physiological property of human being, such conception trivializes the history of freedom as a philosophical concept. Throughout the history of philosophy, freedom has always been discussed in much larger contexts: If, for example, freedom consists in acting freely in causally determined nature, a conception of human freedom arises only from metaphysical presupposition. The same holds true for an understanding of human freedom as something realizing itself in history, as something that is only possible through grace, or as something that must be won against dominant interpretations of self and world. The concept of freedom is thus not only a topic in practical and theoretical philosophy, but can be understood as a connection of both–and be it in a tension between the two. We are calling for contributions both in the history of philosophy and in a systematic approach to the topic.

  Representing the people

  Les participants seront amenés à s’interroger sur la notion de peuple. Comment le peuple se définit-il ? De façon autonome et/ou dans son rapport aux autres ? Pourquoi, comment et quand la notion de peuple émerge-t-elle dans l’histoire, la langue, la littérature et les arts ? Le peuple s’écrit-il lui-même ? Sinon, qui se charge de lui donner une voix ? Cette démarche est-elle légitime ou intéressée ? A qui ces représentations sont-elles destinées ? Quelles sont enfin les modalités de ces représentations ?
