A New Historiographical Field and its Contribution to the History of Europe
German-Polish history is an innovative and stimulating field in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. We propose to reflect the historiographical and memorial challenges that governed the formation of this field as well as the concepts and methods on which it has since been built. They are now the basis for the dynamics of the field, due in particular to its ability to associate different scales of analysis from the local to the global level. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of Polish-German history and other »bi-national« historiographies like Franco-German history to the project of writing European history especially when it comes to the specific approaches forged or adopted by historians in these fields (transfer, shared history, histoire croisée, connected history, entangled history, Zwischenraum).

Final Conference of the ValEUR research project
The conference addresses the role, effects and meanings of values at the crossroads of politics, culture, market and law. It documents the circulation and shaping of values between the different spheres of the European multi-level governance (local, national, supranational, transnational). It investigates the EU as a container of values politics as well as its interactions with external entities (Council of Europe, UN, rest of the world). A secondary purpose is to map the research using values as an exploratory framework of wider transformations of politics, policies and polities in Europe. Leaders of scientific projects having developed such agendas in recent years figure among the contributors.

Femmes artistes à l’âge classique (arts du dessin, peinture, sculpture, gravure)
Comment ces artistes sont-elles désignées, et de quelle manière préfèrent-elles se nommer ? Le siècle hésite à se saisir d’expressions pour les qualifier. Quelles sont les conditions de travail et de vie de ces artistes ? De quelles façons apprennent-elles leur art, où peuvent-elles l’exercer et l’exposer, avec qui à leurs côtés ? Quelle est la réception de leur art dans les Salons et les journaux de l’époque, en France et en Europe ? En quelle réputation – nationale et internationale, bonne ou mauvaise – sont-elles ?

Genealogies of memory in Central and Eastern Europe
Images as witnesses to history, materialized memories or their active co-creators? The multi-faceted relationship between the past and its visual representations will be the main focus of the 7th edition of the international genealogies of memory conference to be held in Warsaw on 6-8 December. The agenda features inter alia lectures by Ernst van Alphen, Robert Hariman, Constantin Parvulescu and Wojciech Suchocki, as well as Mieke Bal leading the tour of her own video-installations entitled “Dis-Remembered: A Long History of Madness” and “Mis-Remembered: Reasonable Doubt”.

Repetition/s: Performance and Philosophy in Ljubljana
Contemporary developments in the increasingly intertwined fields of philosophy and performance call for a renewed inquiry into the question of repetition. With its unique critique of ideology arising from a synthesis of German Idealism and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Ljubljana School (Dolar, Zupančič, Žižek et al.) continues to furnish important theorisations of repetition and performance as they pertain to subjectivity and the political. One of the primary aims of “Repetition/s” will be to investigate and develop the usefulness of the Ljubljana School’s theorisations for the emerging field of Performance Philosophy.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies
The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

La Nation et ses « rapatriés »
Pieds-noirs et « Vertriebene » dans une perspective comparée
L’Allemagne et la France ont intégré des millions d’émigrés après la seconde guerre mondiale et la décolonisation, que ce soient les expulsés des territoires de l’Est ou les rapatriés européens d’Algérie. En dépit de parallèles notables, les deux processus ont généralement été étudiés isolément. Le colloque international propose de les mettre systématiquement en perspective et se concentre sur les questions suivantes : quelle signification les territoires perdus avaient-ils pour la France et l’Allemagne ? Quel a été l’impact de l’intégration des expulsés et des pieds-noirs dans les deux sociétés ? Comment a-t-on commémoré l’exode, l’exil et l’expulsion, à quels conflits et controverses ont-ils donné lieu à l’échelle nationale et internationale ? -

Coloquio - Época contemporánea
Ce colloque clôture un projet ANR mené au Centre d'études des mondes russe, caucasien et centre européen (CERCEC, CNRS/EHESS), intitulé « Caucase et Asie Centrale : un autre Sud ? ». Il rassemblera à Almaty, outre les membres de l'équipe du projet, une cinquantaine de participants venus d'Asie Centrale, du Caucase, de Russie, d'Europe des Etats Unis et du Japon. Pluridisciplianire, ce colloque a pour ambition d’interroger la pertinence des outils heuristiques élaborés à partir de terrains situés au « Sud », mais aussi de la notion même de « Sud(s) » pour appréhender les périphéries méridionales de l’espace post-soviétique. Il entend réunir des chercheurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales (sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques, géographie, anthropologie, démographie, économie). L'URSS et la seconde guerre mondiale
Le colloque « l’URSS et la seconde guerre mondiale » entend rendre compte des nouvelles approches de l’URSS en guerre telles qu’elles se sont développées au cours de ces vingt dernières années à l’appui de sources nouvellement accessibles. De multiples travaux attestent en effet d’un défrichement important dans des domaines aussi divers que l’expérience civile de la guerre en territoire occupé ou l'arrière du front soviétique, les figures de combattants, les représentations du conflit, son impact sur le système et la société soviétiques, etc. Ces approches, souvent très spécialisées, méritent d'être resituées dans le panorama plus large de la guerre en URSS et du bilan nouveau sinon plus nuancé qui se dégage des introspections récentes sur cette période. L'intérêt croissant qu'elle suscite confirme la nécessité de procéder à un état du chantier en cours. -

Historical Development of National Systems of Elite Formation in Eastern and Central Europe
This workshop is bringing together specialists from mostly Eastern Europe together with some West European partners, capable and liable of sharing their localised research expertise in the study of the birth and initial development of national systems of elite training in a number of (mostly but not exclusively) small East Central European societies. All of them have very concrete empirical research agendas and records in these fields, but separately, applied to their own national societies. The idea of the meeting is born from the need of and the interest in comparing – in many thematic issues term by term – research findings, insights and questions gained from studies of the training, career and activities of various East European elite groups during the decades up to the Soviet take-over. -

Religions et politique dans les Orients d'Europe (XIVe-XXe siècle)
The goal of this conference is to explore a number of aspects of the relationship between the religious phenomenon and politics through the historical framework of political developments in what progressively will become, through interaction, the Orients of Europe, i.e. Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, an area so unorthodox and difficult to examine in terms of essentialist definitions. It is no accident that Samuel Huntington believed that what we call the ‘Orthodox East’ does not form a part of the West, but rather a sui generis encounter between Christianity and Islam at the borders of Europe. This theoretical scheme is not overturned by drawing the borders of Europe a little further to the East, as many believe, but by historicizing the issue of the relationship between religion and politics in the given geographical region through the comparative prism of what was occurring during the same period in Western Europe. -

Le théâtre après 1989 en Europe médiane
L’année 1989 a marqué un tournant dans l’histoire de l’Europe médiane. Vingt années après la chute du mur de Berlin, le Centre d’études tchèques de l’ULB a choisi de s’interroger sur l’après 1989 et de focaliser sa réflexion sur les arts de la scène. La visée de ce colloque est de désarticuler l’année 1989 pour mettre en exergue les points de convergence et de divergence du théâtre centre européen contemporain toutes générations confondues, et de tenter de cerner les nouveaux traits par lesquels il se définit. Les intervenants sont tant des historiens et des théâtrologues que des artistes de la scène. -

Autriche, Bohème, Hongrie et Pologne, fin du XIVe siècle – milieu du XVIe siècle
Ce colloque réunissant des chercheurs français et surtout étrangers s'efforce d'éclairer le moment décisif dans l'histoire de l'Europe centrale et orientale que constitue la fin du Moyen Âge et le début de l'époque moderne. Alors qu' elle semblait sur le point de « rattraper » ses modèles, elle se singularisa par des choix qui contribuèrent à la maintenir en marge de l'Europe pendant des siècles. Ce colloque s'intéresse exclusivement aux aspects sociaux, religieux et culturels. Les faits politiques et diplomatiques pourront faire l'objet d'un second colloque s'inscrivant dans le même cadre chronologique et géographique.
