The South Atlantic route and the business of the maritime transport of migrants (1870-1960)
The objective is to propose a special issue to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, by contributing for the understanding of the business of emigrant maritime transport from the Belle Epoque until the end of the 1960s. The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

Revolutionary cosmopolitanism. Transnational migration and political activism, 1815-1848
The period 1815-1848 not only was characterized by several waves of revolution in Europe, the Atlantic world and beyond, but also by large movements of migration. Although these migrations can often be associated with political uprisings, only few connections have been made between the study of migration history and history of political thought and practices. This one-day conference aims to bring together these different strands of research and to discuss how experiences of migration and cross-boundary mobility contributed to the formation of common revolutionary cultures in the period 1815-1848.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence / PJCV
Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

The seminar on contemporary history of the Department of social and economic sciences of Sapienza University of Rome will organize a conference that will take place from 13 to 14 December 2018 in Rome titled: “The European Left and the Jewish question: Zionism, anti-Semitism and the Arab-Israeli conflict”. The goal is to explore the relationship between the Left and Jews in the two hundred years’ history of the political left, considering three major themes: the Jewish question as seen by left-wing authors; Anti-Semitism and its representations in left-wing culture; The Arab-Israeli conflict as a node of comparison between the Left and the Jewish question.

Le but de cet atelier est de réunir des doctorants à n’importe quel stade de leur projet de recherche (est encouragée d’ailleurs la participation des doctorants en début de recherche) afin d’explorer la relation État-société comme une approche théorique ou heuristique dans le cadre de leur recherche. L’objectif est d’unir les ressources afin d‘aider à une réflexion sur ce concept et son application dans la recherche au-delà les limites nationales/linguistiques et disciplinaires afin d’accroitre la sensibilisation des débats et les problématisations (et ressources) en dehors de la culture académique de chaque participant.

First international seminar for post-graduate students in Sport History
A first international seminar for PHD and post-graduate students in sport history (political and cultural perspectives) supervised by Prof. Dave Day (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Prof. J.-F. Loudcher (Bordeaux) is planned at Bordeaux between the 11th September and the 13th September 2017. It is the first of a series of seminars between the two universities (the next will be in Manchester) and will provides an opportunity to establish new relationsships and partnerships with students ands researchers from all over the world. In addition, this one will have a workshop on European project research funding on cultural and political sport coaching in a comparative way for an application in 2018. It is possible to just attend the seminar and the workshop.

The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?
Europe 1815-1848
In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

L'anglo-saxonnisme et l'anglobalisation en question
Les relations anglo-américaines sont abordées le plus souvent dans le cadre de l’histoire des relations internationales et de la diplomatie. Nous proposons de les étudier plutôt à travers l’histoire de projets internationaux, qu’ils relèvent du commerce et des affaires ou qu’ils poursuivent des objectifs politiques ou réformateurs au sens large. Le but de la journée d’études est de préciser dans quelles circonstances britanniques et américains évoquent leur histoire et leurs traditions communes, ou à l’inverse mettent l’accent sur ce qui les différencie. D’une manière plus générale, il s’agit d’enrichir la réflexion sur les pratique et les cultures de « l’anglo-saxonisme » au XIXe siècle.

An initial evening lecture will be followed by two days with 3-4 panels each including a comment. The publication of the conference proceedings is foreseen. -

À la redécouverte de la « Grande fièvre ouvrière », 1911-1914
Un siècle après les débuts de la « Grande fièvre ouvrière », l’heure est propice à une redécouverte de cette lame de fond qui secoua les îles Britanniques quatre années durant. Si l’ampleur du mouvement n’est plus à démontrer (un million de grévistes en 1911, quarante millions de journées de grève en 1912, des syndicats qui franchissent le cap des quatre millions d’adhérents en 1914), les événements sont moins connus qu’on ne pourrait le croire et méritent d’être examinés sous des angles nouveaux. Loin d’être uniforme, le bouillonnement prit des formes très variées selon les localités et les régions : le colloque se propose donc d’éclairer spécificités et similitudes, à travers des gros plans sur les principaux ports du Royaume-Uni, mais aussi sur le pays de Galles, l’Ecosse et l’Irlande. Il se penchera aussi sur des aspects parfois occultés du phénomène, tels que l’implication des femmes dans la vague de grèves, les rapports interethniques ou encore la gestion des conflits sociaux par le patronat et l’État. -

Revisiting the Gilded Age: Business and Politics in Late 19th-Century U.S.
Journée d'études organisée le 29 avril 2011 à la Maison de la recherche de Paris 3, par CREW-OPA (Paris 3) et le CENA (EHESS). Cette journée d'études explorera les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Cette période a en effet connu un très profond renouvellement historiographique, à tel point que nombre d'historiens remettent en cause le terme de « Gilded Age » (Âge du Toc) souvent associé à ce moment. Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même : la journée d'études explorera donc, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de ces développements historiographiques, les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays. -

Faveurs, influence et corruption
Culture et politique à l'époque contemporaine (19e-20e siècles)
Au cours des vingt dernières années, les débats collectifs sur la corruption politique ont pris une importance considérable. Dans de nombreux pays, comme au plan international, ces débats ont abouti à la création de nouvelles normes, visant à éradiquer la corruption, au nom de la transparence. Par contraste, l’étude historique du phénomène est encore à ses débuts, particulièrement les recherches comparatistes. Cet appel à contribution concerne un projet comparatiste qui veut montrer comment les phénomènes de corruption, dans leurs formes actuelles, sont apparus, en Europe, entre le début du XIXe siècle et la première moitié du XXe siècle, avant d'évoluer fortement au cours du XXe siècle. -

Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même: à savoir les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays. Nous cherchons donc des propositions de communications pour une journée d'études qui explorent, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de cette nouvelle historiographie, les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle.
