    Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century

    This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).

    European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968

    ACLA 2020 panel

    The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.”  We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

    Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula

    This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).

    English journeys past and present, explorations of the condition of England

    The conference will address the following hypothesis: the illustration of a certain  way of being English, of a specific English way of inhabiting and making sense of the world, were given definition and cultural force through a series of writings which record the impressions of things seen in the course of a journey dedicated to the exploration of a territory, whether the land of England  in its national extension or the more local territory of a particular community. The organizers are calling for papers which will examine a corpus of writing  proposing a first-person observations of a condition of England at various moments in the history of a territory.

    The making of cultural policies

    Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization

    This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

    Resulting from a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences (namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music), in this advanced seminar we will have the opportunity of deepening the understanding around the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban music scenes.     The Cultures of Popular Culture

    Biennial conference of the Royal Irish Academy Committee for Modern Languages, Literary and Cultural Studies

    Just as the term Popular Culture describes the widest range of practices, Popular Culture Studies cover the most heterogeneous objects. While this very diversity makes it exciting as a research field, it presents a challenge in terms of methods and approaches. To promote scientific exchanges at international level, Popular Culture Studies need elements of comparability and theorization. The biennial conference of the Royal Irish Academy, hosted by the School of Modern Languages at Queen’s University Belfast, intends to offer a forum for discussion between academics, teaching and researching in the fields of Popular Cultures. It will consider the benefits of studying Popular Cultures in Modern Languages Studies and seek to map current areas of research. It presents a distinctive opportunity to discuss corpora and contrast approaches.

    Ce numéro de Volume ! La revue des musiques populaires s’intéressera, par le détour de la musique, aux contre-cultures des années 1960 et au-dela – à ce mouvement hétérogène, son identité éclatée, sa circulation planétaire, ses origines, son influence et ses héritages. Nous invitons ainsi les chercheurs à étudier le phénomène de « la contre-culture » musicale mais aussi à en interroger la définition esthétique, culturelle, politique, historique et chronologique : que fut la contre-culture, et comment la musique l’a cimentée ? qu’est-ce qui l’identifie non seulement spécifiquement dans les années 1960-1970, mais aussi plus généralement au-delà : ses caractéristiques « formelles » (caractéristiques musicales, styles), son idéologie (militantisme, modes de vie) ou ce à quoi elle s’oppose (le système, les « valeurs américaines traditionnelles », la guerre, le capitalisme) ?
