A clear distinction between art and other exhibitions characterised the growth of large exhibitions in the nineteenth century. While art exhibitions were staged within a narrowly defined context of European painting and sculpture, all else was displayed within two broader contexts: specific academic disciplines (natural history, history, anthropology, design and industry, book fairs), and/or trade exhibitions. Since at least the mid-twentieth century, this distinction between art and other exhibitions has become blurred. References to the natural sciences, history, theatre, music, dance or literature have been incorporated into art exhibitions, while historical museums have exhibited art works, commissioned art interventions and utilised contemporary curatorial practices. The British museum, for example, hosts ‘permanent’ exhibits of contemporary art works in its collection, as do many other museums.

In 2018 the international conference “History and Its Images”, organized by the Department of Art History of the European University at St. Petersburg, was dedicated to Francis Haskell’s seminal book of the same title, which greatly influenced the study of the visualization of the past. In 2020 we will host a second conference on the representation of the past in the arts and visual culture. Among the questions to be discussed are: how the visuals art and visual culture produce images of the past, how these images were perceived by the different communities and how they were transformed by the national context of their production.

The transformations of Literature and Art Criticism in periodicals between the 18th and the 21st century
Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and contemporary press, the ‘review form’ has been to present an understudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary form that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the evolution of “print-capitalism” has hardly been analysed from a theoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is certainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it significantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a slippery object of study critically.

Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century
This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).

Les intérieurs d’époque Art nouveau : analyser, restaurer, rendre accessible
Le Réseau Art nouveau Network, réseau européen d’étude, protection et valorisation du patrimoine Art nouveau, fête cette année ses 20 ans. Urban.brussels, membre fondateur du RANN, accueille à cette occasion un colloque international à Bruxelles, co-organisé par le RANN et urban.brussels, en partenariat avec le musée Horta et le CIVA. La recherche et le progrès de nos connaissances relatives à l’Art nouveau ont toujours été un des objectifs premiers du RANN. Si l’Art nouveau est accessible à tout un chacun dans la rue même ; si les façades Art nouveau sont l’ornement de bien des villes européennes, les intérieurs suscitent, tant du monde académique que du grand public, nombre de questions liées à leur accessibilité, à leur connaissance et aux restaurations affinées qu’ils nécessitent. Ce sujet des intérieurs n’a pas encore été exploité scientifiquement de manière transversale en Europe ; ce colloque a pour objectif de susciter une confrontation sur les pratiques de recherche, la compréhension, la conservation et la mise en valeur des intérieurs Art nouveau, afin d’identifier de nouvelles perspectives de recherches.

Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula
This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).

De Gruyter and the team of the Art Market Dictionary (AMD) are currently looking for authors interested in contributing to their encyclopedia project. The AMD is the first reference work providing encompassing information on commercial art galleries, dealers, auction houses, fairs and advisers in Europe, the USA and Canada in the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to appear in 2020, it will be published in print and as an online searchable database. It is edited by Johannes Nathan and supported by a number of specialized institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, or the Archives of American Art.

The Terra Foundation is honored to collaborate with the Fondation Custodia and the British Museum on the exhibition The American Dream: Pop to the Present. Prints from the British Museum, a presentation of modern and contemporary American prints from the British Museum collection. To mark the opening of The American Dream, join us for “Art, Life and Politics: American Printmaking from the 1960s to Today” a two-day international conference organized in conjunction with the exhibit. Der V. Internationale Kongress der Mythokritik „Mythos und audiovisuelle Gestaltung” ist eine Initiative des Forschungsprogramms Acis&Galatea, finanziert von der Autonomen Gemeinschaft Madrid und dem Europäischen Sozialfonds der EU. Der Kongress findet an vier Standorten mit den folgenden Themenschwerpunkten statt: „Germanische Mythen“ an der Universität Alcalá, „Klassische Mythen“ an der Universidad Autónoma, „Biblische Mythen“ an der Universidad Francisco de Vitoria und „Moderne Mythen“ an der Universidad Complutense. Beitragsvorschläge von interessierten Wissenschaftlernkönnen an einen der vier Standorte gesendet werden. Hierbei soll die Rolle des Kinos, der Fernsehserien und der Videospiele bei der Gestaltung und Adaption der antiken, mittelalterlichen und modernen Mythen in der heutigen Welt untersucht werden.
