Maritime Knowledge for Asian Seas
An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists
This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16th-18th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.

The aim of the conference is to exchange recent archaeological and environmental data obtained in Armenia and to bring together the points of view of researchers from various disciplines in the fields of Human Sciences and Environmental Sciences. Particular attention will be paid to the theme of traffic flows: the movement of people, in connection with the evolution of the environment; the circulation of techniques and know-how and the circulation of raw materials and objects.

Textiles and Gender: Production to wardrobe from the Orient to the Mediterranean in Antiquity
Textiles et genre s'entrecroisent à plusieurs niveaux, depuis la transformation des matières premières en tissu, jusqu'aux vêtements, et à la construction des identités. Les contributions à ce colloque examineront la division du travail selon le genre dans la production de textiles, ainsi que les attitudes à l'égard de l'habillement et du genre à travers le Proche-Orient et la culture méditerranéenne dans l'Antiquité (depuis 3000 av. J.-C.), en mettant en valeur les associations interculturelles et culturelles spécifiques.

This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.

More than a decade after the first conference founded the field now recognized worldwide as a significant historical inquiry at the intersection of art, science, and technology, media art histories is now firmly established as a dynamic area of study guided by changing media and research priorities, drawing a growing community of scholars, artists and artist-researchers.

Narrations du passé, performances et reconstitutions musicales (XXe-XXIe siècles)
Chercher à reconstruire les musiques du passé et leur histoire est une préoccupation ancienne. Depuis le XIXe siècle, l’imaginaire orientaliste a considérablement alimenté l’idée de l’existence de musiques « originelles ». Qu’il s’agisse de musiques « pharaonique », « arabe » ou « hindoue », une même référence au passé, vu comme prestigieux et immuable, a contribué à rationaliser les savoirs musicaux sur la base de filiations construites. Si la période orientaliste est relativement bien documentée, le présent workshop s’attache plus spécifiquement aux manières de dire et de raconter le passé au cours du XXe jusqu’au début du XXIe siècle.

People, Networks and Complexity in Archaeology and History
This conference will provide a platform for pioneering, multidisciplinary collaborative work in the field of network science. It aims to bring together the disparate international community of scholars working to develop network-based approaches and their application to the past and to provide a forum for the discussion of the most recent applications of the techniques, in order to ask what has been successful or unsuccessful, to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and cooperation, and to stimulate debate about the application of network science within the disciplines of archaeology and history in particular, but also more broadly across the entire field. -

Pratiques religieuses et christianisation de la cité dans l’Antiquité tardive
Le colloque a pour objectif de rassembler des historiens, archéologues, historiens des religions, autour du problème de la christianisation de la cité tardo-antique, et plus précisément autour des mutations des pratiques religieuses et de leurs conséquences sur la cité. On a vu dans l’interdiction des cultes païens au profit du christianisme le signe du passage d’une religion civique, extériorisation d’un rituel partagé de facto par tous les citoyens, à une religion communautaire, fondée sur l’adhésion confessionnelle de ses différents membres. Il s’agira dès lors de se demander dans quelle mesure l’abandon progressif des cultes païens, lesquels jouaient depuis toujours un rôle prépondérant dans la construction des identités civiques, au profit de nouvelles pratiques religieuses chrétiennes modifièrent les comportements sociaux, politiques, économiques et culturels. -

Dans la tradition des grands colloques internationaux en archéologie, le International Research Center for Archaeology, Brijuni-Medulin (Croatie), sous le patronage de l'Unesco et du Ministère de la culture de la République de Croatie à Zagreb, avec la collaboration de la Society for the History and Cultural Development of Istria, Pula, et le Centre for Historical Research, Rovinj (Centro di ricerche storiche, Rovigno) organise à Pula-Medulin-Rovinj (Croatie), les 23-26 novembre 2011 son vingt-septième symposium thématique sur la navigation ancienne de la Méditerranée nord-occidentale, de la Préhistoire jusqu'au début du Moyen Âge. -
Première conférence multidisciplinaire sur l’histoire naturelle et culturelle du Wadi Ramm
The area of Wadi Rum in Southern Jordan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed natural and cultural site in June 2011. Scholars involved in the the preparation of the nomination file came to realise that scientific knowledge about the broader Wadi Rum area is scarce and does not do justice to the importance of the site, be it its natural or cultural dimensions. It also became apparent that there is a need to systematise research and documentation efforts, and provide technical advices to the relevant authorities for the monitoring and conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the site. Man and the Desert: the First Multidisciplinary Conference on the Natural and Cultural History of Wadi Rum is expected to be the first of a series of conferences on the interactions between human communities and arid environments to take place every two years in Wadi Rum. -

11è Conférence internationale sur l'Histoire et l'Archéologie de la Jordanie
La 11ème conférence sur l'Histoire et l'Archéologie de la Jordanie s’inscrit dans une série de rencontres scientifiques initiée par Son Altesse Royale le Prince Hassan bin Talal de Jordanie en 1980. Elle reste, depuis cette date, placée sous son patronage, en associant occasionnellement le Palais Royal – en 1989, Sa Majesté Royale la Reine Nour avait inauguré en personne la conférence qui s’était tenue à Lyon, en France. La conférence se déroule dans des lieux différents tous les trois ans (Oxford au Royaume-Uni, Amman, Irbid et Pétra en Jordanie, Tübingen en Allemagne, Lyon en France, Turin en Italie, Copenhague au Danemark, Sydney en Australie et Washington aux Etats-Unis), en partenariat avec une institution universitaire de la ville d’accueil. La Conférence n’a jamais encore été accueillie à Paris. -

L'Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (KIK-IRPA), avec la collaboration de l’Université de Liège, la Vrije Universtiteit Brussel, l’Université libre de Bruxelles et l’Association du patrimoine artistique, est heureux de vous inviter au colloque « Tree Rings, Art, Archæology » qui se tiendra à Bruxelles du 10 au 12 février 2010. Le thème de ce colloque international est la contribution de la dendrochronologie aux sciences humaines, dans une vision plus large que la seule datation du bois (détermination de l’origine du bois, écologie forestière, histoire du climat…). Il comprend des interventions non seulement de dendrochronologues mais aussi des utilisateurs des données dendrochronologiques, que sont les archéologues, les historiens, les historiens de l’art et les restaurateurs. -

Archéologie et médias : quelles représentations, quels enjeux ?
Ce colloque est l’occasion de faire le point sur les représentations de l’archéologue et de l’archéologie dans les médias. L’analyse de la presse écrite et audiovisuelle (radio, cinéma, documentaire) et de la littérature (roman, bande dessinée, etc.) seront autant d’axes pour comprendre la perception de l’archéologue dans notre société, dans les supports médiatiques en eux-mêmes ou auprès des publics qui reçoivent ces discours. Deux perspectives sont principalement envisagées : les fictions et les médias vulgarisateurs, même si des ponts peuvent évidemment être établis entre les deux. -
