A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History

PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Bien que la notion de durabilité continue d'être associée au rapport Brundtland (1987) et au concept de développement durable, une communauté de chercheurs et de praticiens de la durabilité cherche de plus en plus à émanciper le concept pour être en accord avec les connaissances et les aspirations du moment. L'enthousiasme et les attentes à l'égard d'une plus grande durabilité vont au-delà des simples questions environnementales. Ils abordent également des questions sociales cruciales. Les communications du symposium visent à remettre en question les paradigmes, les modèles, les scénarios et les pratiques qui incarnent la durabilité. On peut se demander quel sens donner à l'idée même de durabilité et aux représentations qu'elle véhicule.

New obstacles to migration, new tactics among migrants

This conference will explore the transformation in the access to territory, mobility and rights. We will explore how the public image of refugees is transformed by xenophobic discourse and the everyday management of asylum rights, including the role of the private sector and the subsequent mobility of refugees. We will further explore the functioning of the access to rights of EU-migrants and the everyday functioning of other migration policies, including the access to healthcare, the detention of migrants and the access to citizenship. Finally, we will explore the political and electoral mobilisations of and in solidarity to migrants and minorities, including artistic expression, developed in answer to the new obstacles to migration.

Nous voulons montrer comment le travail scientifique de ce plus grand encyclopédiste de la première moitié de l'Europe du XIXe siècle est plus que jamais au cœur des questions liées à notre planète d'origine, la Terre, et aux questions posées par notre entrée dans l’Anthropocène.

Behaviour, Management and Response

The actual behaviour of individuals and government entities before, during, and immediately after a disaster can dramatically affect the impact, vulnerability, recovery time and resilience. Despite decades of research on disaster risk and perception, studies on actual damages and responses after disasters, decision-making tools, and actionable knowledge of the actual behaviour of the populations are still a challenge. Uncertainty derives from lack of information, lack of trust, alternatives, previous experience, but also segregation, oppression, etc. This conference is addressing the knowledge gap between risk perception, evacuation, response, and adaptation behaviour. It aims to build a multidisciplinary panoramic European view.

The Pillars of Rule

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia

Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

Les discours politiques et médiatiques actuels sur les questions d’« intégration », d’« appartenance » et de « frontières » sont dominés par les points de vue des États-nations occidentaux. L'objectif de cette conférence mi-parcours du réseau de recherche 35 « Sociologie des migrations » de l’Association européenne de sociologie (ESA) est de recentrer le débat sur le point de vue des personnes qui sont désignées et abordées dans ces discussions, et qui deviennent la cible de politiques frontalières et de mobilité de plus en plus complexes et différenciées. En d’autres termes, cette conférence réinterrogera la manière dont les appartenances et les frontières sont actuellement remises en cause et transformées à divers niveaux (local, national, international), et dont l’approche biographique dans l’étude des migrations peut apporter un nouvel éclairage sur ces processus.

The old Babylonian Diyala: research since the 1930s and prospects

The region around the river Diyala, which runs approximately 500 km, from the mountains between Iraq and Iran, down to the south of Baghdad where it joins the Tigris, was the home of dozens of cities, villages and communities during the long history of ancient Mesopotamia. In the first centuries of the second millennium BCE, the strategic position of the region turned it into a point of articulation, dispute and mediation of the Babylonian area in the south and the Assyrian area in the north. Added to the growing power of the city of Eshnunna, this led the region to play a significant role in the international politics of those times.

The underlying premise of this event is that a new inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural and inter-stakeholder dialogue is necessary in order to respond effectively to the urban mobility issues put forward by the three pillars (social, political and cultural) of sustainable development. How to combine the growing necessity and desire for speed in travel, with the imperative of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gases? At the same time, how to achieve better quality public space dedicated to or crossed by mobility? How to ensure that the mobility of people, whether undergone or chosen, is part of a municipal and societal project that is acceptable and sustainable?
