  Blasphemy and Violence. Interdependencies since 1760

  Liberas (Ghent, Belgium) in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany) announce a Call for Papers for a conference and subsequent edited volume on the subject of blasphemy and violence since 1760. Contributions are invited for a conference to be held at Liberas in Ghent. Papers delivered at this conference will be expected to be nearing completion with a view to subsequent publication in the second volume of ‘New Perspectives on the History of Liberalism and Freethought’ in early 2021, a new peer-reviewed open access series published by De Gruyter Oldenbourg.

  Urban governance and its disorders: Corruption in the cities

  The issue of corruption has, of late, become of growing interest to social scientists and historians although research in corruption in urban settings less so and the relationship of corruption to urban governance even less. The complexity of governance as distinct from government has raised questions, particularly since the 1980s, as state governments have sought relationships with private and voluntary actors to manage and deliver services and other public goods.

  I Congreso Internacional Territorios de la Memoria

  La celebración del congreso del 2017 se integra en un marco más amplio de trabajo, dedicado al estudio de aspectos como: la integración de la historia de España en el contexto europeo,  la oposición a los totalitarismos, el fomento de la democracia, el cumplimiento de los derechos humanos, la construcción  de la ciudadanía y la memoria como objeto de conocimiento. El Congreso nace de la relación y colaboración mutua entre  Les Territoires de la Mémoire Liège y Territorios de la Memoria España, se enmarca en un espacio de trabajo dedicado al estudio de los totalitarismos, los derechos humanos, la democracia como valor fundamental, el concepto de ciudadanía, y la memoria como objeto de investigación, fundamentalmente en un ámbito europeo.

  This conference intends to continue the tradition of the Hispanic-Dutch-Belgian meetings and will bring together a number of established and early-career researchers working in the field of the institutional history of the Habsburg Low Countries from the 16^th to the 18^th centuries. It aims to draw attention to a broad range of political, cultural, religious, legal, and military institutions by focusing on the enriching approaches that have shaped historical research on institutional history in the past few decades. At the same time, it hopes to bring into the limelight some exciting new (and often interdisciplinary) perspectives that characterize current research in the field.

  From the late XIX^th century onwards, both the competence and scale of Ministerial departments and State-run corporations have increased continuously in Western countries. This growth – which accelerated after each World War, and became a truly global phenomenon in the second half of the XX^th century – necessitated the construction of large and well-equipped office buildings, which were often grouped together in the "administrative districts" of capitals and other major cities.
