  The South Atlantic route and the business of the maritime transport of migrants (1870-1960)

  The objective is to propose a special issue to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, by contributing for the understanding of the business of emigrant maritime transport from the Belle Epoque until the end of the 1960s. The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

  ReThinking Europe in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region

  The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies

  Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union?   The Price of Peace: Modernising the Ancien Régime?

  Europe 1815-1848

  In many historiographic traditions, the so-called "Restoration" has been depicted as an awkward interval between the Napoleonic Wars and the age of nationalism. This international conference has the ambition of breaking down old myths and stereotypes about the ‘Restoration’ in order to think more broadly and openly about the key transitions and issues. The conference will revolve around the provocative historiographical issue of whether the post-Napoleonic order represented an attempt to reconcile the heritage of the Ancien Régime with a deeply transformed world. Topics explored by panels of invited experts from across Europe will include Rethinking the "Restoration", New departures in international relations, Constitutions vs. Charters, Rebirth of composite monarchies, Before and Beyond the Nation, Historicising the Ancien Régime?, New borders and old identities.

  Encounters of Empires

  Interimperial Transfers and Imperial Manifestations, ca. 1870-1950

  The conference will take place in Cologne from January 16th to January 18th 2013 and is co-organized by Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Cologne. An initial evening lecture will be followed by two days with 3-4 panels each including a comment. The publication of the conference proceedings is foreseen.

  Migrations forcées et politiques de protection de la jeunesse, XIXe-XXe siècle

  La plupart des jeunes placés en institution dans le cadre des politiques de protection de l’enfance ont été en réalité déplacés, non seulement dans le but des les éloigner de chez eux, mais aussi en vertu d’une volonté de les enraciner ailleurs. Ainsi, certaines politiques mettent en œuvre un programme raisonné de déplacement massif de populations juvéniles, souvent au-delà des frontières nationales, selon des visées colonisatrices, du fait de conjonctures politiques spécifiques – guerres et changements de régimes, d’utopies pédagogiques et idéologiques, ou de stratégies institutionnelles particulières. Le numéro 14 de la Revue d'histoire de l'enfance « irrégulière » portera sur les politiques migratoires contraintes concernant les jeunes placés en institution dans l'objectif de comprendre comment ces enfants (dé)placés deviennent des enjeux de pouvoir, des acteurs des relations internationales, des sujets politiques sans droits politiques.

  L’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée, XVIIIe-XIXe siècles

  Si les opérations navales américaines au cours des deux conflits mondiaux et la présence permanente de la sixième flotte en Méditerranée depuis bientôt un demi-siècle révèlent clairement l’intérêt porté par les États-Unis pour cet espace, cet intérêt s’inscrit dans la durée. Dans un temps long, l’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée peut apparaître au fond comme le dernier épisode de la mainmise des puissances atlantiques sur les commerces méditerranéens esquissée par F. Braudel. Ce colloque réunissant des spécialistes de huit pays se propose d’étudier comment la jeune république américaine appréhende et investit l’espace méditerranéen au lendemain de son indépendance, quelles représentations de l’intérêt et de la géopolitique de cet espace elle se crée, comment les acteurs politiques et économiques américains se sont positionnés dans cette région.
