The author – Wanted, dead or alive
New perspectives on the concept of authorship, 1700-1900
The goal of this conference is to reassess, challenge, and enlarge the concept of authorship, by giving the author a post-mortem of sorts. To do this, we want to bring together fresh and critical historiographical perspectives on the concept of authorship, and challenge participants to think in comparative and transnational frameworks. Ideally, we seek to draw together work from a wide variety of sub-disciplines, creating a dialogue which connects often-separated fields such as book history and literary history.

Circulation and Scientific Institutions
The Americas, Western Europe, South Asia (1750s-1914)
While historians should take into account the movements in space that constantly transform sciences, they should not lose sight of the specific locations dedicated to the daily work of scientists. In scientific facilities (museums, laboratories, hospitals, etc.), modern scientists use their research instruments, meet with members of their networks, teach, and interact with various actors from outside of their scientific community. Participants in this symposium will seek how to write the history of this dynamic between circulation and institutions of science.

How to construct it, how to read it, what to learn from it
The purpose of the workshop is to gather scholars who have worked with historic central bank balance sheets to put these current debates into a longer-term perspective. We particularly welcome contributions that highlight the challenges posed by analyzing balance sheets both in a cross section and over time, notably by potentially different meanings of balance sheet categories and changes in the underlying operations.

Le monde atlantique d'Antoine Benezet, 1713-1784
Le colloque « Le monde atlantique d’Antoine Benezet » aura lieu les 30, 31 mai et 1er juin 2013 à Paris (Universités Paris Diderot et Paris 8 – Vincennes). Le colloque commémore le tricentenaire d’ Antoine Benezet, huguenot né à Saint-Quentin en 1713 et qui, devenu quaker à Philadelphie, inspira la croisade antiesclavagiste à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Le colloque aura pour axes de réflexion: – la France, les huguenots et le Refuge dans sa diversité ; – l'histoire sociale et spirituelle des colonies britanniques d’Amérique du nord ; – le combat antiesclavagiste des Quakers nord-américains. -

L’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée, XVIIIe-XIXe siècles
Si les opérations navales américaines au cours des deux conflits mondiaux et la présence permanente de la sixième flotte en Méditerranée depuis bientôt un demi-siècle révèlent clairement l’intérêt porté par les États-Unis pour cet espace, cet intérêt s’inscrit dans la durée. Dans un temps long, l’irruption des États-Unis en Méditerranée peut apparaître au fond comme le dernier épisode de la mainmise des puissances atlantiques sur les commerces méditerranéens esquissée par F. Braudel. Ce colloque réunissant des spécialistes de huit pays se propose d’étudier comment la jeune république américaine appréhende et investit l’espace méditerranéen au lendemain de son indépendance, quelles représentations de l’intérêt et de la géopolitique de cet espace elle se crée, comment les acteurs politiques et économiques américains se sont positionnés dans cette région. -

Cosmopolitanism and the city: urban production and consumption 1600-1800
International Conference on Urban History, Lyon, 27th - 30th August 2008
La session a pour objet d'étudier l'impact des échanges interculturels et des conflits ou contradictions engendrés par l'essor, aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, du commerce mondial, en particulier la circulation croissante des biens de consommation de luxe orientaux, américains, européens : quelles furent les relations entre ville, cosmopolitisme, nationalisme, production et consommation ? Trois thèmes seront abordés plus précisément : le poids grandissant des importations exotiques sur la consommation européenne ; les influences du cosmopolitisme sur les producteurs et les consommateurs (langage, lieux, identités...) ; les conflits ou contradictions culturels, politiques et économiques induits.
