    Sociability and the Travelling Letter

Message, Medium, Mobility in Europe and the Colonies in the Long Eighteenth Century (1650-1850)

The long eighteenth century is widely recognisedby scholars as a golden age of letter writing, characterised by the expansion of transnational and transatlantic correspondence networks among the elites. Particularly in Britain, this period witnessed an unprecedented enthusiasm for epistolary exchange, which led to a proliferation of publications—ranging from scholarly productions such as theoretical treatises and letter-writing manuals, to literary works, whether fictional, sentimental, general, or biographical. These developments contributed to a redefinition of epistolary conventions, narrative models, and often gendered representations of letter writing.

Peripheral Archives in Africa and Eurasia (19th-20th century)

On 10 October 2025, we will bring together historians from Eurasia and Africa (19th and 20th centuries) to reflect on the concept of peripheral archives and how the production/preservation/use of archives located on the periphery or margins (geographical, political, global or national, family archives, village archives, non-state institutions, the Global South, etc.) informs the writing of history.

    Manga in Every Sense

As we all know, manga is all about seeing. But it also requires the reader to hear with their ears, smell with their nose, tongue and skin. It engages all five senses, and not only sight as is often believed. How are these sensations conveyed to the reader in manga? What roles do images, text, narration and onomatopoeia play? These are just some of the questions this symposium aims to address.

    Youth intimacies

Epistemologies and methodologies in Britain and in France

At a time when the social sciences are taking an increasing interest in the field of the private sphere and intimacy in relationships, the aim of the symposium is to bring together specialists whose work in France and the UK has enriched our knowledge of young people’s intimacy. Using examples of projects on love, sexual and parental relationships, the aim of this symposium is to examine, in a reflective and comparative way, the different theoretical and methodological approaches underpinning research. Definitions, theories and tools (demographic surveys, qualitative interviews as well as visual, narrative and performative methods) and their cultural and institutional contexts, will be explored in order to discuss the production of knowledge in the two countries.

    Dark Networks

Imaginaries of Shady Connections and the Global Underworld from the Nineteenth Century to the Present

Observers of modern life have not always been optimistic about transnational connections. From the nineteenth century to the present day, the cosmopolitan ideal of a united world has been challenged by widespread anxieties about mysterious and dangerous networks. This exploratory conference critically examines the cultural and political significance of these imaginaries of dark networks from the nineteenth century to the present. Drawing on a series of historical case studies, we suggest to take three key features as a point of departure: figures such as traffickers, clandestine migrants, or spies; spaces such as ports, borderlands, or tunnels; and goods such as weapons, counterfeit money, or revolutionary pamphlets.

In light of the ecological crisis ecofeminist thought that first emerged as political-ethical and theoretical field during the late 1970s and 1980s has flourished in French and German debates during the last decade. The aim of the conference is to examine the ways in which ecofeminist theory is currently discussed in France and Germany, and how – in both national contexts – the respective traditions of ecofeminist thought and politics are re-articulated, criticized and transformed. Thereby the question how post- and neo-colonial power relations that shape the current ecological situation are addressed in ecofeminist thought will be of central importance. The conference seeks to re-evaluate traditions of ecofeminist thought in French and German speaking contexts, their uneven circulation and their present-day re-articulations.

    Literatur and Psychiatrie revisited, 1920–1970

Momente gegenseitiger Beobachtung | Moments d'observation mutuelle

Europe and the USSR. Literature in the face of the persecution and extermination of the Jews

The workshop’s purpose is to examine the literary, artistic, musical and cinematographic responses to the rise of anti-Semitism in the 1930s, which led to the systematic persecution and extermination of Europe’s Jews. It will focus on the period before as well as after the war. This will allow to consider, on the one hand, the capacity of literature (and other media) to project an aftermath as a consequence of ongoing events, and on the other hand the aftermath as it was felt in the years following the Shoah.

    Memory, Place, and Material Culture

If remembering and feeling, designing and decision-making are situated as well as embodied processes, then cognition can have material and ecological components. Our mental lives may be partly constituted by places – landscapes, built environments, neighbourhoods – and by artifacts. This workshop examines relations between memory, place, and material culture. Our topics include maps and spatial cognition, tools and devices in wayfinding and memory, mental health and the city, difficult places and historically burdened heritage, and spatial disruptions of memory. Speakers draw on evidence from archaeology, architecture, art, neuroscience, performance, philosophy, and sociology, opening up new questions about the nature of bodily and affective orientation as people navigate places and the past together.
