Artists' representations

X D. João VI Museum Seminar

The ways in which we understand this figure in the history of art are the result of the visual and textual discourses built upon it. Its representations are present in portraits and self-portraits, sculptures, paintings, engravings and objects. It is also built through artistic criticism, the press, caricature, pieces of literature, biographies, or autobiographies. From texts of self-promotion to cinematographic works, we are interested in all forms of representation of the artist's figure, both visual and textual. Our temporal range is ample, reflections on the artist in diverse historical places and periods, including contemporaneity, are emphasized in the Brazilian and Latin American context, without ignoring comparative perspectives. Our starting point is the following question: In what ways have the transformations of perception about artists and their meanings (social, cultural, symbolic and political) marked the writings of art history?

Artists’ collections

Art Collections in Portugal and Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries

What are the representations of the artist's figure and how have they transformed over time? Intellectuals or artisans, martyrs or demons, naive or revolutionary, madmen or philosophers? Possibly, artists have been and still are characters in which several layers of interpretation coexist and blend. In this X edition of the D. João VI Museum Seminar, we present the theme "artist’s represetations", in parallel to the exhibition organized by Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and the Brazilian Museum of Fine Arts, with the objective of investigating the historical constructions of the artist's image, bringing the reflection to the Brazilian and Latin American context, past and present. This has been extensively explored in French and English literature and acquires special relevance in this specific geographic universe, marked by the social distinctions concerning manual labor and the late formation of the art medium in the modern sense, after the formation of the academies and an artistic promotion system through exhibitions and the art market.

Thinking Latin-American Right-Wings in the XXth Century

This conference is the continuation of two previous conferences held in France (2014) and Argentina (2016) which saw the gradual emergence of a community of researchers working on the questions of identities, ideas, practices and discourses of actors and movements from Latin American rightwing. It is difficult to establish the precise conceptual limits of the rightwing because of the heterogeneity and plurality of the groups and movements that have historically been part of this family and which are thus characterized by the presence of diverse political traditions. It is therefore essential to imagine flexible boundaries when considering rightwing history and taking into account the changes it experienced over time. Our purpose is not to establish canonical definitions, but rather to contribute to set general frameworks for this field of study whose historical relevance and actuality are no longer to be demonstrated, but whose limits and fundamental characteristics are still debated.

Le bal paré-masqué guyanais, rencontre culturelle entre le bal travesti bourgeois et la danse traditionnelle populaire et endiablée, a connu nombre d’évolutions au fil des années. Ce colloque propose de faire le point sur les fondements historiques et anthropologiques de cet évènement carnavalesque, sur le rôle des acteurs qui s’y engagent, sur ses enjeux socio-économique, politique et culturel dans le contexte d’une société plurielle et mouvante. Des questionnements valables pour toute autre forme de bals masqués saisie hors du territoire guyanais.

Cet événement vise à poursuivre les discussions entamées lors du premier symposium « enser les droites en Amérique latine au XX^e siècle », qui s’est tenu à Paris en janvier 2014. À l’instar de ce premier événement, nous voulons contribuer à l'élaboration d'une réflexion universitaire sur les droites, leurs promoteurs et défenseurs, leurs organisations, leurs idées et leurs pratiques. À cette fin, nous invitons les chercheurs issus de différentes sciences sociales et humaines à soumettre des articles qui nous permettent de mieux connaître les organisations, les idées et les identités des droites latino-américaines au XX^e siècle.

Thinking prisons in Latin America

Du 22 au 25 avril se tiendra le colloque « Penser les prisons d'Amérique latine » dans la ville de Lima. Pour la première fois dans la région, l'événement réunira des spécialistes du monde académique autour de la thématique pénitentiaire. Le but de la rencontre est de diffuser et de partager des connaissances sur l'univers carcéral du continent latino-américain. Avec la participation d'invités et d'intervenants du Mexique, du Salvador, de Colombie, du Venezuela, d'Equateur, du Pérou, du Brésil, d'Argentine, du Chili, de France et d'Italie, le programme s'articule autour de cinq axes thématiques : histoire de l'enfermement punitif, prison politique, marchés de l'enfermement, relations scoiales en milieu carcéral et genre et sexualités.

La proposition de cette rencontre et d’essayer de questionner les normes essentialisantes – telle qu’exprimées dans les discriminations raciales -, les classifications – qui excluent certaines couches de la population – et le primat du langage – qui évacue la cognition des expériences sensibles, telle la culture des signes des sourds.
