    Time to Play

Playful Participation as an Artistic Methodology: Histories, Curatorial Practices, Museums

The third issue of the new series of Senzacornice Journal. Studies on the Contemporary Art System takes as its point of departure two seminal experiences centered on spontaneous and self-managed play. These are understood both as models for social and communal construction through audience engagement, and as investigations into the mutually productive relationships between human and machine, and human and object: The Model – A Model for a Qualitative Society (Stockholm, Moderna Museet, 1968, curated by Palle Nielsen) and Play Orbit (London, Institute of Contemporary Arts, 1969, curated by Jasia Reichhardt). In both cases, the curators conceived play as a voluntary activity—mediated or unmediated—capable of restoring to the participant a freedom of action that is increasingly constrained or denied within institutional contexts.

Lost in Translation: Historical Perspectives on Language and Student Mobility from the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Century

This workshop, held at the University of Geneva on 16 June 2026, aims to foster reflection on the languages of student mobility from the nineteenth century to the present, through a historical perspective that has so far been little explored. In order to launch a historical reflection while remaining open to interdisciplinarity, the event will examine the tools and methods of language learning, as well as the actors involved in it, the learning environments, and the diplomatic stakes tied to the language of study.

Education and pedagogy in Bayle's work

    Online Bayle Seminar 2026

How do children engage in ritualised daily practices and rituals?

The Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in France: milestones for a plural history

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers who have carried out work on the history of Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC), using a variety of approaches, while helping to identify and stimulate new work on issues that have yet to be fully addressed. Between its creation in 1943, on the foundations of the Centre artistique et technique des jeunes du cinéma (CATJC) established in Nice in 1941, and its merger-absorption by La Fémis in 1986, the IDHEC was a central institution in cinema education in France, whose history it accompanied. Yet the school has never been the subject of a monographic publication covering its entire history.

Circulations of pedagogies: craft teaching in a colonial and post-colonial context

Educational reforms: contributions from subject didactics

Political education: citizenship, moral training and teaching of religion

    International approaches (19th-21st centuries)

Major international surveys such as the ICCS survey of the IEA (International Association of the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) or that of the European network Eurydice have been devoted to citizenship learning at school from a comparative perspective, but they have shown little interest in non-school actors or in the relations of these actors with education. Moreover, they only marginally address the relationship between citizenship learning, moral education, religious education or teaching about religions. It is these relationships that the conference aims to shed light on by exploring the institutional, professional, epistemological and political issues at stake in public educational, not only in official texts, but at every level.

Education in Times of Crisis and Emergency

The term crisis, as defined by Souriau (1990), designates any dangerous and decisive disturbance which calls into question the ordinary course of things. On the other hand, the notion of emergence, formally defined, constitutes the idea of the appearance of a nascent phenomenon. This concept implies a pluralistic ontology, that is, a plural and evolving universe, in which new forms of existence appear, but may also disappear. The objective of this conference is to reflect on the way in which countries have faced educational challenges in times of environmental, health, migratory, gender, social and/or political crises at different moments in history.

Training, educating, instructing in France, in the British Isles and in America in the 17th and 18th centuries

These 2022 post-graduate study days set out to explore the broad range of the pedagogical theories and educative practices that were developed throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in the British Isles and in America. The three suggested semantic lines – training, educating, instructing – should allow for a cross-referencing of approaches on how knowledge was passed on from one generation to the next, from a teacher to a pupil or from a parent to a child. Though distinguishable from one another, the three terms stem from a same basis which establishes the relation between the learner and the instructor, but also between the learner and the object of his or her apprenticeship.

    Children’s Drawings in Comics

Commonly drawn for children, comics have a particular link to children’s drawings. The diversity and multiplicity of interactions between comics (as a cultural object produced for children) and children's drawings (both as objects of adult discourses and as children’s productions) offer a vast field of inquiry. This thematic issue of Comicalités invites to open up this field by examining different ways of looking at and thinking about children's drawings in the history of comics.
