The Bible in the Managment of Material Life in Christian Societies (4th-16th Centuries)
The BibGes workshop and congress aim to highlight the embeddedness of sociopolitical mechanisms in beliefs from the 4th to the 16th century, across the various structures of Christian communities (Byzantine, Latin, Coptic, and Ethiopian). Historians, legal historians, and art historians are invited to submit papers for investigations into what may be considered an interface between pragmatic writings—those serving administration and the transmission of goods and individuals—and the Sacred Scriptures, both as text and as the Book.

Living and Dwelling in the Mediterranean Space: Practices, Representations, and Environment

Forms of cultural and social resistance in Algeria. From Antiquity to Independence

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
This conference aims to study the history and evolution of two classical Greek concepts, anarchy and polyarchy, whose legacy, considered from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, unfolds at the crossroads between politics and religion. It will explore the transmission of the classical Greek, and particularly Platonic, condemnation of anarchy and polyarchy, and its connection with the apologia for monarchy in political and philosophical thought during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and in Judeo-Christian thought.

Senecta ista iuuenilis est, senecta ista uiridis est
Crossed perspectives between youth and old age in sources of Greek and Latin languages
At a time when debates are intensifying on the reversal of the age curve in Europe and, more broadly, in the Western world, the notions of “youth” and “old age”, considered as social categories, strongly resurface. However, these categories—for which consensual definitions may be lacking—are far from neutral.

The Changing City in Roman and Late Antique Africa: Actors and Scales of Transformation

Wilful Imprecision – Irregular Measures in Graeco-Roman Antiquity
We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the international conference Wilful Imprecision: Irregular Measures in Graeco-Roman Antiquity, which will take place in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, 8–10 September 2026. This conference proposes an ex negativo approach to the concept of standardisation of measures in antiquity. Rather than focusing on norms and uniformity, we aim to explore irregularities in measures and measurement from a range of perspectives, including economic studies, political theory, legal history, literature, archaeology, religious studies, hermeneutics, and philosophy.

Omens, Thresholds, and Signs of Crisis in the Historiographical Construction of the Event
In a historical moment marked by political upheavals, social crises, environmental catastrophes, wars, and new forms of collective mobilization, reflecting on the conscious choices — and the conscious non-choices — that precede moments of historical rupture becomes a useful and necessary tool for understanding the deep connection between decision and transformation. The 2026 Student Conference seeks to shift the focus away from the final event to investigate the acts that immediately precede it and to ask whether it is possible to explore, with historical awareness, the suspended moment before rupture : the moment before the last straw.

Tax resistance in the Roman world

On the Trail of Prehistoric Individuals: Scientific Challenges, Methods, Perspectives
This conference explores the identification of individuals in Prehistory—a topic that inspired several foundational studies in the late 1970s and 1980s. Nearly 50 years later, where do we stand? From the Palaeolithic to the Metal Ages, how can we attempt to identify individuals through the full range of available archaeological remains and materials? What methods can we employ to achieve this? What are the conditions of their use, their levels of resolution, and more broadly, their advantages and limitations? By applying these methods, what insights can we hope to gain into the social and economic organisation of past societies? Finally, how can we envision the future of this ambitious, yet undeniably complex, field of research?

Attractiveness and mobility networks: seducing, welcoming and integrating
As part of the study day "Attractiveness and Mobility Networks," PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars are invited to explore the dynamics of attractiveness in individual and collective mobilities, from the Bronze Age to the modern era. The event focuses on the legal, political, and social mechanisms implemented to attract, welcome, and integrate individuals into networks. It also examines the formal and informal circulation of information, as well as the processes of community clustering. Particular attention will be given to both the successes and failures of these mechanisms of attractiveness.
