Forms of coexistence and distinction in Rome's western provinces

L’Association pour l’archéologie romaine en Suisse (ARS) organise un colloque intitulé « La société provinciale romaine en question - Formes de coexistence et de distinction dans les provinces occidentales de Rome ». Sur ce thème longtemps réservé aux historiens et aux épigraphistes, l’archéologie pose un regard nouveau : quels indices matériels permettent l’identification de l’ordre social, tant à l’échelle du territoire, du site, que de l’individu ? C’est à ces questionnements essentiels que cette rencontre scientifique propose de répondre - ou du moins d’apporter quelques pistes de réflexion. 25 chercheuses et chercheurs originaires de Suisse, d’Allemagne, d’Autriche, de France, d’Espagne, du Royaume-Uni et des États-Unis sont attendus pour ces deux journées qui s’annoncent fructueuses.

The Belvedere Research Center continues its conference series on digital transformation of art museums with its fifth anniversary event on this crucial subject. The focus of this event is on the metaverse, an embodied virtual-reality experience, and its connection to cultural institutions. The aim of our forthcoming conference is to give an initial impetus for critical examination of the metaverse in the cultural field. We seek to stimulate discussion about the position of cultural institutions in the metaverse. What should an art museum in the metaverse look like? What role should it play?

Reading the soil in archaeology: field practice and interdisciplinary perspectives

Soil features have been at the heart of archaeological questioning for several years, stimulated in particular by the work carried out in preventive archaeology. Their identification, particularly in the field, remains a source of new data and new approaches. Their interpretation is becoming an indispensable step in the archaeological research and can, for certain periods, play a central role. The symposium aims to promote the interdisciplinary reading of the soil component in field archaeology, relying in particular on the contribution of earth sciences in general.

Fourth Joseph Déchelette European Archaeology Prize

The internationally renowned archaeologist Joseph Déchelette (1862-1914) was one of the founders of European protohistoric archaeology. The Association Joseph Déchelette, founded in 2010 by his great nephew Édouard Déchelette(†), would like to keep the memory of this great scholar alive and promote this discipline. It has therefore teamed up with various partners to establish the Prix Joseph Déchelette with a view to promoting the PhD research of a young archaeologist.

Gregorian reform - a total revolution?

Comparative state of research in Francophone and Germanophone spaces

La période post-carolingienne a donné lieu ces dernières décennies à des approches très différentes des deux côtés du Rhin : cette période, longtemps très étudiée en Allemagne selon une approche institutionnelle, y a été globalement délaissée ces dernières décennies. À l’inverse, les chercheurs francophones ont réinvesti récemment le moment grégorien, désormais interprété comme une « révolution totale », pour reprendre l’expression de F. Mazel, alors que la césure grégorienne est au contraire très peu soulignée dans les travaux portant sur l’espace germanique. L’objectif de cet atelier est de faire se rencontrer de jeunes chercheurs issus de champs disciplinaires très différents, de l’histoire religieuse à la diplomatique, en passant par l’histoire de l’art et l’histoire politique, la littérature et l’histoire du droit.

Ecclesiastical spaces and secular fiefdoms

Definitions, models and conflicts in interface zones (9th-13th centuries)

La distinction claire entre monde laïque et monde ecclésiastique et le concept d’espace de domination, compris comme une zone connue, délimitée et donc cartographiable, semblent aujourd’hui être des notions évidentes. Elles ne l’étaient pourtant absolument pas dans un monde médiéval où, d’une part, la réforme grégorienne a entamé, à la fin du XI^e siècle, un processus de séparation des pouvoirs aristocratiques laïques et ecclésiastiques et où, d’autre part, la conception de l’espace de domination aristocratique connut une évolution très importante, du X^eau XIII^esiècle, avec un phénomène de spatialisation, puis de territorialisation, du pouvoir, ce qui permet progressivement de passer d’une cartographie faite de points à l’émergence de zones de domination plus ou moins identifiables et donc représentables graphiquement.

This event should allow the meeting of researchers: mainly geologists, mineralogists, archaeologists, historians, in order to cross the different point of views on both ancient and recent archaeological discoveries at first, to develop a multidisciplinary, diachronic and international research program in a second time. Various speakers will address their issues related to the study of this mining district.

The Association Joseph Déchelette teamed up with various partners to establish the Prix Joseph Déchelette with a view to promoting the PhD research of a young archaeologist, who had their PhD thesis viva between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2015. The PhD research must focus on European protohistory in the broadest sense, from a geogra- phical or chronological perspective (Bronze and Iron Ages and the period of Romanisation).
