Issues and paradoxes of the digital capture of manual work

Organised as part of the ANR project Me3dAx, this study day aims to explore how contemporary digital technologies for capturing, preserving, modeling, or disseminating digital data can affect so-called “manual” practices—i.e., work-related, leisure, or semi-leisure activities that require bodily engagement.

Behind the Scenes of Journals in African Studies

    Cahiers d’Études africaines

This special issue of Cahiers d’Études africaines seeks to examine academic writing and publishing within the scientific editorial system of African studies, both today and in the past. Reflexive and critical, but without being strictly introspective, since it is not solely concerned with the case of Cahiers, this special issue encourages future contributors to take scientific publishing in African studies as a subject and a field of investigation, focusing on three entry points: texts, individuals, and journals. Its ambition is to investigate the “engine room” of the African studies publishing by examining its operating mechanisms and the challenges they reflect or activate.

    DATARights Seminar 2025

Access rights, Algorithmic transparency, and Data protection challenges

In the digital age, online platforms collect and exploit huge quantities of personal data, profoundly influencing social, economic and political dynamics. Yet their opaque operation limits access to the information essential for analyzing their mechanisms and measuring their impact. These infrastructures act like black boxes, making the study of their practices particularly complex. The DATARights seminar examines the right of access to personal data as a lever for transparency, particularly in the context of scientific research. Through several sessions in French and English, it will bring together researchers and experts from various disciplines to examine the concrete uses of this right, its limits and the challenges linked to its collective exercise in the face of algorithmic and data governance issues.

    In Relation to Life

Biological Relationality in Contemporary Science, Theory, and Politics

    In Relation to Life

Biological Relationality in Contemporary Science, Theory, and Politics

Relationality as a concept and a framework has become an essential component of contemporary science, theory and politics. Its transversal importance has been evidenced through its qualification as a paradigm shift in the science, as a relational turn in philosophy and theory, and as a new end goal of politics. This conference aims at creating bridges between contemporary science, theory, and politics through focusing on the various ways they approach and integrate biological relationality, understood as the entanglement of living entities with each other at different scales (cellular, physiological, multispecies, ecosystemic, planetary, etc.) and with nonliving entities (pollutants, machines, matter itself, etc.).

    Language & Power

    5th young researchers Symposium ICODOC

If language can exercise power, power can reciprocally manifest itself through language practices. It is, among other things, from an institutional point of view that the problematic of an “order of discourse” has been approached. Based on the effects of the performativity of language, the symbolic value attributed to it, and the patterns of domination conveyed by language, the research has shown that power is not an inherent characteristic of individuals, but is linked to the communication situations that imply it, especially in the institution. The legitimacy of language practices, far from being natural, is constructed by social norms and rituals which do not, however, erase the agentivity of individuals. These few thoughts raise the following questions: who exercises power and how? In what way(s) is power transmitted through language? How is legitimate language constructed and reproduced?

Memory of the heritage in evolving and changing context and future challenges

The last several decades have witnessed that memory of heritage has been on top of scientific research, reflection and interpretation and has marked increase in research in relation to cultural heritage, memory and change, and to transformation within the field of heritage studies. It is considered to be the heritage of tangible and intangible heritage assets of a group or society that is inherited from past generations, which has been reconstructed in present to make it accessible and beneficial to new generations. Therefore, memory of heritage is an interdisciplinary instrument that plays a significant role in shaping a sense of identity and a source of inspiration for creativity and innovation, but it is also can be a reason of exclusion, or even hostage to political conflicts and ideological debates.

Questioning Technology in a Time of Global Upheaval

This thematic dossier puts forward the hypothesis that technology today represents a space of differentiation and a place for negotiating plural and conflicting interests, with a direct impact on material production, the organisation of work and labour, and the definition of space. Why and how is technology defined in contemporary architectural, urban and territorial production? What political and social projects does technology embody? What are the issues and controversies involved? To further explore this hypothesis and to help answer these questions, this call for papers aims to build an open debate on an international scale, to shed light on current controversies and to question the place and role of technology in a time of global upheaval. Papers may focus on one or more of the following topics.

    Symbioses, transdisciplinary prospects

The study of the interdisciplinary notion of symbiosis has become a subject of reflection on biological identity, its becoming within the symbiotic relationship with an associated environment (biotic, abiotic, social) and on the nature and diversity of symbiotic relationships. Using transdisciplinarity as a method, the idea is therefore to reflect, across different disciplines, on the definitions of symbioses in living organisms and their heuristic, symbolic and even metaphorical dimensions and on the nature and temporality of symbiotic relationships between living organisms, including with our germs.

    Femmes de sciences

For this sixth thematic dossier, the online journal Design, Arts, Media is launching a call for contributions on the relationship between women and science. How to confront, reread and question the role of women at the crossroads of historiographies in science, art and design? Without reducing the roles devolved to creation and research, but on the contrary by looking at the friction, confrontations, nuances, paradoxes and demarcations between practices and knowledge, how can we think about histories together, but also their specificities? What are the new critical stakes for thinking the role of women as creators of knowledge? Particularly sensitive to the place of women in the theorization of design and media, this issue wishes to welcome contributions in visual and cultural history, sociology, philosophy, anthropology of humanities and social sciences, art, design and architecture, since the beginning of the twentieth century.
