A Summer School for the Study of Women and Temporalities in Early Modern Europe
The goal of this summer school is to help doctoral students develop an interdisciplinary reflection on the intersection between gender and time in the early-modern period. With the help of invited keynote speakers, workshops around secondary literature, primary written and visual sources (notably from the Palais des Beaux-Arts’s collections), and discussions around the candidates’ research, we aim to foster interest in this framework and complexify approaches to gender studies and key themes such as the question of agency or the inscription of women in history.

Economic Regulation and Informal Economies in the Medieval and Early Modern Periods

Summer School - Representation
Cultivating one’s own garden, expanding horizons
Mapping the personal and the collective through history of art and the humanities, from Impressionism to the present day
The Seine has shaped the history of the Impressionist movement, which, in turn, left a lasting mark on the land. The research framework of this programme places the focus on this influential geographical backdrop, as part of a broader reflection on our regions. Housing traditions, ways of life, social structures, land uses, and the impact of agricultural and industrial development on the landscape are just some of the lines of research that require further study about Impressionism. This summer school aims to open up new perspectives through cross-disciplinary collaboration while experimenting with scales of analysis, to reflect on the experience of land from the most personal to the most universal.

Rereading, (re)emergence, appropriation: What is to be done with the art of the past?
The writings of art historians, like the works of art themselves, are a place of emergence, return, and incessant reinterpretation. This dialogue between periods at the heart of both artistic creation and the narrative of our discipline will be the subject of the 2026 edition of the Ecole de Printemps. Proposals for papers could present case studies, where a work or body of work quotes, repeats, adopts, or readapts earlier images, objects, or monuments. They might analyse historiographical reinterpretations by considering them as transhistorical interventions and reappropriations – whether textual, visual or museum-based.

The Economies of War in the Medieval and Modern Periods

The economies of nature in medieval and modern periods
The 12e summer school in economic history proposes to tackle the fundamental theme of the use that medieval and modern economies made of nature, i.e. the way in which the elements making up their environment were transformed in order to be inserted into the processes of production, exchange and consumption, thus becoming resources with multiple functions that also fundamentally transformed the living environment of human beings, contributing to the construction of rural or urban landscapes. This is as much a question of epistemology as of empirical knowledge, and the partial overlap between two sub-disciplines, economic history and environmental history, raises questions.

Degrowth as a way of thinking about the future of tourism?
Development models based on the idea of growth have reached their limits from an environmental, social and human perspective. Moreover, the ideology according to which economic growth and technical progress are the only remedy for the various socio-ecological crises ignores the fact that six of the nine planetary limits (Rockstrom et al., 2009) are now outdated. The Summer School firstly plans to reflect on the concept of degrowth, within its critical and analytical scope. Then we will question the variations and challenges that come with it in the context of tourism areas. Finally, (alternative) local tourism development projects will be discussed from a degrowth perspective during field visits.

Spaces of trade in the medieval and modern periods
Institutions, scales and dynamics
