Land Use and Consumption in a Historical Perspective
Definitions, Concepts, and Methods
The relationship between societies and soil is intrinsic to human history. Nowadays, this relationship is strongly defined by land use and consumption practices that, at different scales, increasingly threaten the common good and the biodiversity conservation. Urban planning interventions and intensive forms of production lead to the fragmentation, erosion, and ultimately, transformation of soil into a commodity, a freely usable “raw material,” rather than recognizing it as a non-reproducible good. In such a context, a revision of the evolution of concepts of use, consumption, and artificialization of the soil can contribute to a better understanding of the perspectives and rhetoric developed over time and in relation to contemporary challenges.

Conference, symposium - History
Housing, property and citizenship (18th-21th centuries)

Architectural Design Competitions in Europe from the 15th to 21st centuries –an Overview
While not entirely ignored, the question of architectural design competitions seems to have been largely underestimated by contemporary historiography, although these competitions have marked the history of western architecture since, basically, the famous competition of 1418 in view of the construction of the cupola of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence – this is only to mention the modern era.

Thinking the Anthropocene debate with Merleau-Ponty
Chiasmi International 24, thematic section on “Thinking the Anthropocene debate with Merleau-Ponty,” will investigate the possible convergences and divergences between Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s thinking and the notion of Anthropocene as well as the contributions that the work of the French thinker can offer the latter, in view of its possible enrichment and its further problematization.

The social dimensions of cognitive cartography
Cartotête fourth study day
Cognitive representations of geographical space are often studied in order to better understand how individuals perceive and deal with everyday spatial problems (Down and Stea, 1977), including orientation, trip planning or navigation. Since these works focus particularly on the functional dimension of such spatial representations, maps are read in a literal, rather than metaphorical perspective. In addition, individual geographical experiences, both direct (trips and visited places) or indirect (spatial information) is considered as the main factor contributing to their construction. Therefore, this “cognitive tool” is essentially considered as an individual and personal construction.

The Renewal of Buildings and Spaces as Urban Policy, from Antiquity to the Present
Everywhere in Rome, monuments are covered with ancient or modern inscriptions that not only contain the name of the original builder but also commemorate their restoration. Popes from the Quattrocento and Cinquecento who acted as urban planners, such as Sixtus IV, presented themselves as ‘restorers’, even when they were actually modernising the City. This phenomenon is not restricted to the Renaissance period: many Roman emperors already claimed to be rebuilders, such as Augustus who repaired all the damaged temples of Rome according to the Res Gestae, or Septimius Severus who was called Restitutor Vrbis on his coinage. Rome thus seems to be a city that constantly needs to be restored, rebuilt, born again. This conference aims to investigate how the notions of restoration and rebuilding were a driving force of Rome’s urban transformation throughout its history, from Antiquity to the 21st century, as well as a political program put forward by the authorities and an ideal more or less shared by the different key actors of the city.

The commission (XIIIth-XVIIth centuries): actors, contracts and productions
Every piece can be studied through its commission. The conditions of pieces commission in late Middle Ages and early modern period started a long series of studies in the domain of the History of Arts. The multidisciplinary approach led by our PhD meetings brings us to enlarge the field of the study focusing on the different types of artistic production, be they painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theatre, dance, literature or philosophy. Contributions will focus on every kind of production, material or immaterial, lasting or not, preserved or not.

Conference, symposium - Thought
Spaces in action, actions in space

Thinking the fabric of the city in times of crisis

Via Aurelia and the topography of the Latium and Tuscany coastline
For the last decades, the studies carried out along the Italian coasts have been a favoured field of research, concerning some specific aspects of the antique and mediaeval society, its links with the sea, and with other men beyond the sea. Within that context, the coasts of Lazio and Tuscany reveal themselves to be particularly interesting: they are the witnesses of a wealthy business network, along the coast lines, centred on the via Aurelia, and the numerous harbours and mooring areas, used since ancient days. This colloquium is dedicated to reopening a debate among experts, thanks to the contributions of various research approaches, and with a particular attention to the Tuscia area.
