Locating the Lost Archive of Arab Cinema
This special issue asks how our histories of Arab cinema might change if we tackle the problem of Arab cinema’s lost archive(s). From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance.

Forty years of cinema in Japan (1980-2020)
This edition proposes rethinking the last forty years of Japanese cinema along the following lines: industrial, aesthetic, thematic and theoretical. The history of cinema in Japan is still polarised into two “golden ages”: the 1930s and the 1950s, both periods of excellence through their production and artistry. The works of Ozu, Mizoguchi, Naruse and Kurosawa naturally come to mind for their expression of what is considered as quintessence of uniquely Japanese cinema. But the impact of a golden age is discernible only when in proportion to the decline that surrounds it: from the fits and starts of primitive cinema, to the provocations of the new waves, all the while snubbed by militaristic propaganda. Historiography would nevertheless find its model in this scansion between the peak and trough. But sixty years after the end of its last “golden age”, what relevance does such model still hold, if not to deplore the former glory of a production now adrift?

Languages and translation: cognitive stakes
Al-Kīmiyā, the journal of the languages and translation faculty at the Saint-Joseph University of Beirut (issue 19)
La thématique retenue pour le numéro 19 d’Al-Kīmiyā est : « Langues et traduction : enjeux cognitifs ». Depuis quelques décennies, les recherches en sciences cognitives s’intéressent aux processus d’apprentissage en explorant le phénomène de la plasticité cérébrale. Les progrès s’avèrent aujourd’hui réels et incontournables. Les principes fondamentaux de l’apprentissage, ou ce que Stanislas Dehaene appelle les piliers de l’apprentissage, sont bien définis et nécessitent une adaptation, une remise en question, voire une révolution des pratiques d’enseignement. L’enseignement des langues et de la traduction/interprétation ne fait pas exception à cette nouvelle donne. De plus, les recherches descriptives se multiplient pour étudier les processus de traduction et d’interprétation ainsi que ceux des phénomènes linguistiques tels que le bilinguisme ou le plurilinguisme sous l’éclairage des sciences cognitives.

Comment penser les retours à la terre lorsque celle-ci vient à se dérober, vient à manquer (Charbonnier, 2017) ? Lorsque le retour à la terre, perçu un temps comme un refuge, se heurte à des épreuves : sécheresse, inondation, incendies, érosion, mais aussi conflits entre personnes, groupes, intérêts ? Ce séminaire de recherche vise ainsi à examiner, entre Europe et Japon (ou au-delà), les initiatives, les expériences, les collectifs qui se sont constitués en réponse à des crises, passées, actuelles ou anticipées et quels liens au milieu, au vivant et aux autres celles-ci promeuvent.

Religion in Constitutions within a Global Context: Political, Legal and Cultural Dimensions
Religions differ profoundly in terms of their impact on public life, the political breadth of their scriptures, and their foundational models. Islam, for example, is not a minimalist religion of just beliefs and rituals, rather, Islam encompasses all aspects of life in its philosophical, moral, and legal outlook. However, the issue of utilizing aspects of religion in constitutions is not exclusive to the Islamic world. Many, if not most, countries around the world have included religious texts, teachings, and obligations within their constitutions. Thus, it is necessary to deal with this issue within a global and comparative framework that encompasses its political, legal and cultural dimensions.

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas
Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

Languages and Translation : Cognitive Challenges
La Faculté de langues et de traduction de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth et ses institutions rattachées (l’École de traducteurs et d’interprètes de Beyrouth -ETIB, le Centre des langues vivantes - CLV et le Centre de recherches et d’études arabes - CREA)- organisent un colloque international intitulé « Langues et traduction : Enjeux cognitifs » à Beyrouth (Liban). Ce colloque a pour but de réunir des équipes de recherche intéressées par les problématiques qui portent sur les liens existant entre les processus cognitifs et l’enseignement/ apprentissage des langues et de la traduction/interprétation.

The collapse of empires in the XXth century: new States and new identities
Le passé revisité à travers le prisme de la relecture des histoires nationales et de la construction de nouvelles identités
Le XXe siècle a été marqué par l’intensification du processus de changements politiques. Les révolutions, les deux guerres mondiales, la décolonisation, la fin de la guerre froide, la chute de l’Union soviétique et la disparition du bloc socialiste ont réorganisé l’équilibre des forces dans le monde donnant naissance à plusieurs nouveaux États. Il s’agit de s’interroger sur quels fondements culturels et politiques les nouveaux États ont été reconstruits et comment ils ont tenté de construire de nouveaux États-nations. Ce processus est inéluctablement lié à une nouvelle interprétation du passé souvent, pour ne pas dire toujours, axée sur l’ethnocentrisme à degrés variables. Dans le processus de création de nouvelles histoires nationales, il est pertinent de prendre en considération l’appropriation des mouvements nationalistes prise par les pouvoirs officiels soucieux de rallier et de plaire aux populations sensibles aux idées d’extrême droite. Comment évoluent les rapports avec le passé impérial / colonial ? Se manifestent-ils souvent à travers la formule : « histoires nationales versus histoires impériales » ?

Transformations: translation and languages
The theme for the next issue of Al-Kīmīya, the Journal of the Faculté de Langues et de traduction of the Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth, is: “Transformation: Translation and languages”. The concept of transformation is present in several disciplines in human and social sciences as well as in the exact sciences. In terms of languages, transformation can be seen as a reflection of the dynamic nature of languages and their users. Languages are being transformed but are also able to transform the speaking subjects. In translation, the nature of the changes that the source text undergoes, is at the heart of thinking. The concepts of subjectivity, creativity, loss and equivalence have not lost their relevance and could be questioned. Is the meaning transformed in translation or is it revealed?

Annual seminar of the "Japarchi" academic theme network
Nous invitons les chercheur·e·s, les doctorant·e·s et éventuellement les étudiant·e·s en master 2 à venir présenter leur travail sur la spatialité au Japon lors des séances du séminaire annuel. Nous attendons une réflexion en cours sur les mots, leurs significations, le contexte de leur énonciation et usages. Les champs disciplinaires convoqués au sujet de l’espace et de la spatialité au Japon sont : architecture, paysage, géographie, anthropologie de l’espace, sociologie, urbanisme, études urbaines, histoire et arts.

Language and Translation: Multidisciplinary Research

Reflection on the links between so-called related disciplines is not new. However, in the last decades, the works which display interdisciplinarity, pluridisciplinarity or transdisciplinarity have increased in number. For some, crossing the borders calls into question the autonomy of the disciplines, as if specialization in one area is no longer possible without recourse to other fields. It is not only a question of revisiting a much debated question, that of the historical relationship between linguistics and translation studies, but of rethinking the nature of the relations which bind one or the other discipline to other fields of study: literature, psychology, philosophy, sociology, cognitive science, culture, communication, history, etc.

The vocabulary of Japanese spatiality
Annual seminar of the Japarchi network
Le réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi s’est concentré sur la définition d’un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon ; ce travail fut matérialisé par la publication en 2014 du Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Le séminaire annuel Japarchi, qui va reprendre à l’automne 2018, souhaite s’inscrire dans la continuité de cette « encyclopédie ouverte » avec des interventions prenant appui et se concentrant sur un terme, une expression, un toponyme. Ces entrées thématiques concernent des dispositifs ou des agencements matériels, construits ou se déployant dans le territoire ; des notions ou des concepts relevant de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme ou du paysage ; des acteurs ou actrices qui agissent dans ou avec l’espace.
