This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

What Art does in School / What Art does for Schooling

Works of Art in Schools and Universities (1880-2020)

On May 12, 1880, Jules Ferry, Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, created the Commission de la décoration des écoles, on the proposal of the Director of Primary Education Ferdinand Buisson. This commission was responsible for studying questions related to the decoration of schools by means of paintings, maps and drawings; the constitution of small artistic collections for school museums; the choice of series of engravings to be given as a reward to children. The creation of this commission thus fulfilled the wishes of Victor Duruy, Minister of Public Instruction during the Second Empire, who had declared: "I would like the walls of our 70,000 schools to be covered, from top to bottom, with images." The desire to bring art into school, not only through the teaching of drawing and later the visual arts, but also through the establishment of a harmonious environment and school equipment with aesthetic pretensions, will be pursued throughout the Third Republic. This effort was not abandoned, but continues today, extending to all levels of education, from kindergarten to universities.

The undisciplined discipline: the challenges of Pop Cultural Studies

This call for paper is for a workshop which it itself included in this year's international symposium of the AFEA (Franch Association of American Studies) which will happen in Nantes, France from May 22 nd to the 24th. This year's main theme of the conference is "discipline/indiscipline." (event for which you can find more information here: http://www.afea.fr/-2019-AFEA-Conference-Discplines-Indiscipline-.html) This workshop intends to address and explore further this binary dichotomy through the prism of cultural studies, interrogating more precisely if the emergence of pop cultural studies is truly something to advocate for. Communications can tackle this issue from a more theoretical standpoint, but they can also deal with more precise case studies which would illustrate how pop culture and cultural studies are both defying disciplinary classifications. Communications can be either in French or in English.

Re-discovering Nelly Arcan

Nelly Arcan est une écrivaine d’origine québécoise. Putain, son premier livre, publié en 2001, est rapidement devenu un bestseller et a été retenu dans les sélections des prix Médicis et Femina. Par la suite, Arcan a publié une autre autofiction, deux romans, des chroniques journalistiques et un album illustré. Ces volumes ont été suivis par la publication d’un essai posthume, Burqa de chair. Elle s’est donné la mort en septembre 2009. Ce colloque vise à réunir les chercheurs et chercheuses dont les travaux portent sur l’œuvre arcanienne, qu’ils ou elles la fréquentent de longue date ou depuis peu, et qu’ils ou elles souhaitent présenter des travaux en cours ou soumettre son œuvre à de nouvelles questions.

Transnational dimensions of dealing with the past in ‘Third Wave’ democracies

Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the Former Soviet Union in Global Perspective

This conference aims to fill the gap by looking at how post-dictatorial justice and memory experiences in Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union after the “third wave of democratization” have reciprocally affected each other. It also seeks to unpack how memorialization practices in these regions were shaped by and influenced in turn criminalization discourses in other geographical contexts (Latin America, Asia, Africa). The conference focuses on transnational activism, transfers of knowledge, and expertise at bilateral, regional or international levels, the impact of legal and mnemonic narratives outside their countries of origin, and the role of international organizations and NGO's in dealing with mass violence. The conference aims thus to trace the mutlidirectional circulation of ideas, norms and models of reckoning with authoritarian regimes both within these regions, and between them and other areas of the world.

Ce dossier souhaite approfondir la réflexion autour de la dimension connectée de l’histoire culturelle du Brésil contemporain à partir d’une perspective différente, à savoir la projection internationale des œuvres littéraires et intellectuelles brésiliennes, ces « lettres » que l’on qualifie volontiers de « Pátrias » au XIX^e siècle.

Family relationships in TV series in the Americas (1970s-2000s)

Cet atelier aura lieu dans le cadre du congrès de l'Institut des Amériques (IdA) 2019. Il porte sur les relations familiales dans les séries des Amériques (du nord, du centre et du sud) dans la période comprise entre les années 1970 et 2000. Durant des décennies d’essor de la télévision et des productions à format court mais comportant plusieurs épisodes, la famille apparait comme un sujet privilégié. L’atelier proposé cherchera à explorer comment les séries télévisés des Amériques abordent la question durant la période envisagée. L’accent sera mis sur la manière dont ces productions reflètent les grands débats de société concernant la famille durant ces décennies, notamment en ce qui concerne les reconfigurations au sein de la cellule familiale tant du point de vue conjugal que générationnel. D’autre part, il s’intéressera tout spécialement aux bouleversements en termes de normativité de genre et de sexualité.

Cultures, arts and peripheral literatures in the Americas

A transnational approach to production, circulation and reception

Après une première édition en 2018 à l’université de La Rochelle consacrée à la culture périphérique dans le Brésil contemporain (littérature, cinéma, blog et saraus), cette seconde journée d’études souhaite élargir la réflexion sur les formes d’expression artistique des périphéries à tout le continent américain aux XX^e-XXI^e siècles. Des voix / voies alternatives et ex-centriques émanent des saraus / tertulias poéticas / poetic gathering, des slams, du street art, des blogs, d’une fiction « marginale » (et marginalisée) et participent à la transformation des récits nationaux. Pouvons-nous donc, dans le cadre de ces mouvements culturels périphériques américains, établir des similitudes tant sur les interrogations que sur les revendications de ces mouvements ? Sont-ils transposables d’un pays à l’autres de la zone Amériques ou bien sont-ils une émanation de réalités différentes des trois aires géographiques ?

Ce numéro thématique s’inscrit dans la foulée des approches plus locales de l’histoire. Car s’il existe des histoires globales du jeu vidéo telles quePhoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames (Herman, 1994), The Ultimate History of Video Games (Kent 2001), The Video Game Explosion: A History from PONG to PlayStation and Beyond(Wolf, 2007) etReplay. The History of Video Games (Donova, 2010), celles-ci se concentrent sur « les gros canons », à savoir les productions américaines, japonaises et européennes. À l’exception du chapitre sur le Canada de Dominic Arsenault et Louis-Martin Guay dans l’ouvrage Video Games Around the World (Wolf, 2015) et de quelques articles publiés dans des revues, entre autres sur les jeux indépendants (comme le Vol 7, No 11 publié en 2013 par la revueLoading...de l’Association canadienne d’études vidéoludiques), on a peu écrit sur la création vidéoludique québécoise pourtant fort riche.

"Transatlantica" special issue

This Transatlantica issue sets out to examine how, in the process of creating new audiences for its products, child-centric media crafted a homogenizing vision of childhood especially compatible with media consumption. As a result, in the course of the late XIX^th and XX^th centuries, media has made itself the vehicle of adult norms and expectations about children’s tastes, behaviors and development – be it to pander to existing tastes and behaviors or shape them to ideal standards, some civic-minded (with emphasis on social adjustment, character building, or good citizenship), some commercial, and others both at once.
