Spanish syndicalism within the framework of international relations

The case of the General Workers Unions (1888-1986)

The emergence of a labour movement, of socialist obedience, more specifically, in Spain, goes hand in hand with internationalism. From its creation, in 1888, the General Union of Workers (UGT) has tried to incorporate the international labour movement. Thus, through time, UGT joined the main organizations such as the International Federation of Trade Unions, the World Federation of Trade Unions, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the European Trade Union Confederation. The UGT also takes part in the work by the International Labour Organization and fosters relations with other foreign organisations. Finally, the UTG is involved with international solidarity groups and organisations dealing with social security like the Democratic Solidary organisation in Spain. To this day, few studies have been conducted on the importance of those links on the growth of the UGT, notably at some crucial moments of its existence such as the Francoist dictatorship and the transition towards democracy. These relations played a decisive part in the survival of socialist trade unions.

Ambroise Croizat, the minister (1945-1947)

Dirigeant syndical et député communiste, Ambroise Croizat a occupé, durant environ seize mois entre 1945 et 1947, la fonction de ministre du travail et de la sécurité sociale. Dans le contexte exceptionnel de l’après-guerre, marqué par les impératifs de reconstruction et un profond désir de transformations économiques et sociales, le « ministre des travailleurs » a joué un rôle décisif sur un certain nombre de dossiers phare de l’époque : conventions collectives, comités d’entreprise, salaires et sécurité sociale. Pour autant, l’action d’Ambroise Croizat, négligée par la recherche historique, est mal connue. Cette journée d’étude entend combler cette lacune et apporter des éléments de connaissances qui permettront d’apprécier plus justement l’œuvre d’un ministre pas comme les autres.

Wages, labour markets, solidarity in European construction since the end of the 1960s

The financial crises faced by Greece, Italy and Spain since 2010 have caused a vast movement of reforms both at European and national levels. Three aspects are of particular importance : increasing public financial transfers through the institution of intervention funds to support the economies of the States in difficulty ; the reduction of the deficits and debts of Member States ; reforms of labour markets and social protection in the States in difficulty. It is on this last point that this working Group intends to focus in a historical perspective. This working Group will seek to consider how patterns of negotiation among European States have emerged from the late 1960s and early 1970s on this issue.

Journée d'étude du laboratoire Telemme

Cette journée part du constat et de la vivacité historiographique actuelle du travail sur la construction des catégories sociales et de la relative marginalité des interrogations sur la catégorie de classe ouvrière. Elle se propose de réinterroger cette notion à partir d'une analyse des forces d'éclatement (logiques de métier, logiques sexuées, logiques locales) et des forces intégratrices (linguistiques et politiques notamment) qui travaillent le monde ouvrier au tournant des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles.
