Post-War: the 1920, construction of a new world?
Selon une perspective d’histoire transnationale et d’histoire comparée, il s’agit ici de faire le point sur la littérature la plus récente consacrée aux années vingt sous l’angle de la circulation des modèles, de l’importance des réseaux constitués à l’échelle européenne ou dans les espaces atlantiques, des mouvements transnationaux et des logiques de rivalité et de solidarité. Nous nous intéresserons tout particulièrement à l’irruption de nouveaux acteurs et de nouveaux enjeux sur la scène internationale, aux phénomènes transnationaux ayant traversé les sociétés de la péninsule Ibérique et de l’Amérique latine et au positionnement des acteurs de ces pays face aux défis de l’après-première guerre mondiale.

Ce colloque est une invitation à réfléchir sur les réalités comparables et les structures communes de l'Ibéro-Amérique entre 1808 et 1848. La réflexion se déroulera autour de trois axes principaux : la formation de l'État, les relations internationales et les représentations de la nation.

Revue Voltaire journal no.21 (2021) – varia
La Revue Voltaire, annuelle, publie des études traitant de la connaissance et de la diffusion des écrits de Voltaire, de ses réseaux, de sa trajectoire et de sa réception. Sa section Varia est ouverte à toutes contributions, publiées après expertise anonyme. 2020 marque l’achèvement des œuvres complètes publiées par la Voltaire Foundation à Oxford : Les Questions sur l’Encyclopédie, l’Essai sur les mœurs et l’esprit des nations, le Siècle de Louis XIV, le Précis du Siècle de Louis XV, la Lettre sur les Anglais, viennent ainsi d’être réédités et susciteront de nouvelles dynamiques de recherche. Quelles nouvelles lectures ces rééditions peuvent-elles susciter ? La posture du philosophe cherchant à rendre raison de l’ensemble des données liant l’homme à son histoire et à son engagement dans le présent est-elle encore lisible ? Le procès intenté aux Lumières, par la voie des débats suscités par les théories décoloniales ou de la cancel culture, influe-t-il sur notre perception de la pensée voltairienne ?

The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

Make our own Walter Benjamin's “Experience and Poverty” ?
We are not in 1933, nor are we threatened, here in Europe, as Walter Benjamin was when, between two apocalypses and already in exile, in an indifference due to historical circumstances, he published his short and incisive text « Experience and Poverty » in a Prague’s newspaper with short-lived existence. However, isn’t the assessment he made of an alliance, by the great creators, between « a total disenchantment about the age » and, nevertheless, « an unlimited commitment to it » also ours ? Not still ours (the Shoah and other catastrophes have shaken up, since then, the order of the thinkable), but again ours, as if we were at the point where, undertaking our poverty today or, disarming voluntarily, would be the lifeline, the way out to escape the inertia promised by a dark future.

European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968
ACLA 2020 panel
The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.” We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

Historiens, géographes, philosophes, littéraires, linguistes de l’énonciation, analystes du discours, juristes, spécialistes des sciences politiques et de la communication, sociologues et économistes entre autres, devront dans leurs perspectives respectives étudier son action politique; les modalités pragmatiques et argumentatives de son discours ; la construction de son éthos ou image de soi ; ses stratégies de communication ; ses stratégies politiques comme opposant et gouvernant, etc.

Dissent Versus Conformism in the Nordic, Baltic and Black Sea Areas
The tenth annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies in Romania
In the meanwhile, conformism seems to have pervaded larger categories of public in East-Central Europe and beyond and new “illiberal democracies” evolved. A composite of authoritarian leader and godfather have taken the reins of power in the area. Populist parties and movements are on the rise. Resurgent nationalisms are again offered as a substitute to solutions. The refugee crisis lingers on and no common decisions have been adopted within the EU to solve it on the basis of the European values. The EU institutions are in need of reform and decisions on the course of the organization and its future enlargement process are still pending. The conference aims at analyzing two often interrelated phenomena: dissent and conformism.

Il s'agira d'étudier les relations entre Gaston d'Orléanset son entourage, et l'imaginaire, les modèles et les modes de pensée antiques.

The origins and foundation of works and institutions in the Middle Ages
East-East, 6th-15th centuries
Le thème retenu, Origines et fondations des œuvres et des institutions au Moyen Âge. Orient-Occident, VIe-XVe siècle (histoire, histoire de l'art, littérature, musicologie), invite à s'intéresser à la création des institutions (fondation d'une institution religieuse, d'une ville, d'une université, d'un gouvernement communal...) et des œuvres (architecturales, artistiques, littéraires, musicales, liturgiques) médiévales. D'abord en recherchant les motivations, les intérêts, les objectifs poursuivis : pourquoi faire naître quelque chose de nouveau ? Ensuite en examinant les modalités concrètes : qui sont les acteurs ? Qui sont les commanditaires ? Comment la réalisation est-elle financée ? Quels sont les choix techniques (au sens large, techniques rhétoriques, littéraires et stylistiques comprises) opérés pour donner sa forme à l'œuvre ? Et quelles sont les conséquences, quel est l'impact de l'œuvre ou de l'institution au moment de sa réalisation ?

Au-delà de la mémoire éclatée
Au Cameroun, dans le processus de décolonisation, de nombreux Camerounais passent de la dissidence à la lutte clandestine. Pour structurer leur capacité à dire non à la colonisation française, ils prennent le chemin du maquis. Ruben Um Nyobe, Secrétaire Général de l’UPC, mouvement interdit en juillet 1955 et dans la clandestinité, considère que : « Traqués par les colonialistes, [les militants de l’UPC] ont été contraints de se retirer de la vie publique ». De même, pour lui, être dans le maquis est tout simplement la continuation du travail de militant dans l’ombre. Cette perception du processus de libération entre en contradiction avec l’interprétation que fait une partie importante des acteurs de la décolonisation du Cameroun.

15th Annual Conference of the International Medieval Society-Paris (IMS)
In the wake of the US presidential election and the Brexit referendum, the Oxford English Dictionary chose the expression “post-truth” as its word of the year. This expression underlines the growing tendency to dismiss objective facts in favor of impulsive—and often prejudicial—feelings, frequently supported by “alternative facts.” The contentious relationship between the truth and lies, or truth and fiction, which is currently playing out in the public arena has, in fact, a long-standing legacy—one which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. For this reason, this year’s IMS conference seeks to investigate the variety of different approaches to truth and fiction that existed in the Middle Ages.

Female resistance. Writing commitment in the 19th and 20th centuries
Nombreuses sont les femmes qui ont lutté contre l’oppression qu’un tiers, physique ou moral, exerçait sur elles. Cette résistance, individuelle ou collective, a trouvé, et trouve encore, sa place parmi des héroïnes, célèbres ou anonymes, qui font entendre leur voix dans le but de bouleverser les codes sociétaux et culturels. Ces modes d’inscription de la résistance au féminin contre l’adversité se vérifient le plus souvent à travers les textes personnels (autobiographies, journaux, mémoires, correspondances), mais aussi à travers les textes journalistiques et politiques qu’elles consacrent à leur engagement.

L'engagement politique lors des révolutions françaises entre 1789 et 1848 peut faire penser aux pamphlets et à la presse, organes d’influence idéologique privilégiés en temps de combat. Et les vers ont occupé une place significative dans ces supports médiatiques. L’un des héritages les plus emblématiques des Révolutions n’est-il pas d’ailleurs La Marseillaise, initialement connu comme L'Hymne de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin ? La présente journée d'étude se propose d'interroger l'emploi et le réemploi de ces formes versifiées (poèmes, chansons, pièces de théâtre) comme source de l'engagement politique et comme enjeu de mémoire durant les différents évènements révolutionnaires en France de 1789 à 1848.

First issue of new journal “Early Modern Low Countries”
In the spring of 2017, Early Modern Low Countries (EMLC) will publish its first issue. The new open access journal will appear in two installments every year, containing high-quality, original scholarship for an international readership on any aspect of the history and culture of the Low Countries between 1500 and 1800. The successor of two well-reputed Dutch-language journals (De Zeventiende Eeuw and De Achttiende Eeuw) EMLC aspires to publish papers by scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds working anywhere in the world.

The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance
Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.
