Ces journées d’études entendent interroger la participation des textiles – réels ou fictifs, matériels, représentés ou feints – dans la manifestation du sacré, compris dans une acceptation large au-delà de la sphère strictement religieuse. La diversité de leurs formes, la pluralité de leurs fonctions et leur potentiel métaphorique seront au cœur de la réflexion.

Body and power: the body in political art in the modern age
The ambition of these two days is to explore issues related to the body carrying a political discourse, by mobilizing works created from the Renaissance to the dawn of the 19th century. By bringing together young and experienced researchers, both French and foreign, this event will make it possible to confront methodologies (formal, iconographic, aesthetic approaches...) by bringing together various case studies discussing these imposing, heroic, seductive, disquieting or repulsive bodies, whose anatomy was more or less unveiled to embody, among other things, the figure of the invincible victor as opposed to the vulnerable victim.

Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century
The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

France 1600. The current state of research and new perspectives in art history
L'Institut national d'histoire de l'art, en partenariat avec le musée du Louvre, organise en mai 2021 deux journées d'études consacrées à la création artistique en France autour de 1600. Elles auront pour objectif de mettre en lumière l'actualité de la recherche et d'interroger l'état des connaissances sur l'histoire de l'art en France à la charnière entre Renaissance et Grand Siècle (entre 1580 et 1620 environ), et devront aborder des champs aussi divers que l'étude des styles, l'histoire sociale, les transferts culturels dans le contexte européen, le connoisseurship, l'exploitation des sources d'archives. Dix ans après la fin des commémorations liées au quatrième centenaire de la mort d'Henri IV en 1610, de nombreuses découvertes ont été faites sur cet « Automne de la Renaissance », et l'étude des foyers régionaux s'est révélée un terrain fertile de nouvelles données, propices à un renouvellement de la discipline et à la naissance de nouveaux horizons pour la recherche.

Animals and portraiture in the Renaissance
L’intitulé du colloque invite à réfléchir aux rapports que les humains ont entretenus avec les bêtes à la Renaissance, et aux échos que de tels rapports ont pu trouver dans l’art du portrait. Les effigies animales individualisées, et même autonomes pour certaines d’entre elles, apparaissent précisément au moment où cet art connaît ses plus grandes évolutions en Occident. Aux XVe et XVIe siècles, les Européens ont manifestement éprouvé le besoin de se définir par rapport aux animaux, jusque dans leur quête d’individuation, et dans la construction de leur propre image. Le concept d’autoportrait avec animal, comme celui d’autoportrait en animal, s’avèrent à cet égard particulièrement intéressants. La richesse de la problématique du colloque appelle une approche pluridisciplinaire et un nécessaire dialogue entre historiens de l’art, historiens, historiens des sciences, littéraires, musicologues, sociologues, philosophes, éthologues, vétérinaires.

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Territorial imagery and the creation of a Dutch identity (1579-1702)
This two-day symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity. Multidisciplinary discussions will allow us to examine the terms of territorial imagery in Dutch visual culture, and their links with the formation of a national myth in the Early Modern Dutch Republic.

Forms, models and influences
Organisé à l'occasion du Ve centenaire de la naissance de Christophe Plantin (vers 1520–1589), ce colloque d'histoire du livre sera consacré au premier siècle d'activité de l'officine éditoriale créée par Plantin à Anvers, et transmise à ses successeurs : les Moretus. Il accordera une attention particulière aux questions de typographie, de mise en page et d’illustration. Les thématiques suivantes seront privilégiées : les caractéristiques formelles de l’édition imprimée entre les années 1550 et les années 1650 ; les influences reçues et exercées par les Plantin-Moretus ; la marque de l’Officina Plantiniana et ses usages.

Choice, circulation and signification of ceremonial gifts in the modern age (16th-18th century)
Cette journée se propose d’étudier, dans une perspective interdisciplinaire et transnationale, les objets d’art offerts comme cadeaux diplomatiques entre le XVIe et le XVIIIe siècle. De manière à susciter une discussion véritablement interdisciplinaire, l'appel à communication s'adresse aux doctorants, post-doctorants et chercheurs issus, en premier lieu du domaine de l’histoire de l’art, mais aussi de disciplines voisines, comme l’histoire, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, la littérature ou encore la restauration d’œuvres d’art.

Music and Late Medieval European Court Cultures
Late medieval European court cultures have traditionally been studied from a mono-disciplinary and national(ist) perspective. This has obscured much of the interplay of cultural performances that informed “courtly life”. Recent work by medievalists has routinely challenged this, but disciplinary boundaries remain strong. The MALMECC project therefore has been exploring late medieval court cultures and the role of sounds and music in courtly life across Europe in a transdisciplinary, team-based approach that brings together art history, general history, literary history, and music history. Team members explore the potential of transdisciplinary work by focusing on discrete subprojects within the chronological boundaries 1280-1450 linked to each other through shared research axes, e.g., the social condition of ecclesiastic(s at) courts, the transgenerational and transdynastic networks generated by genetic lineage and marriage, the performativity of courtly artefacts and physical as well as social spaces, and the social, linguistic and geographic mobility of court(ier)s.

En vue d'un colloque international organisé dans le cadre des célébrations des 500 ans de la Renaissance par les châteaux de Blois et de Chaumont, avec le soutien de la région Centre-Val de Loire et la ville de Blois le personnage de Catherine de Médicis sera abordé sous ses nombreuses facettes : lignage, histoire institutionnelle et juridique, administration du royaume de France, crise religieuse, cour de France, finances, seigneuries, historiographique, évolution des arts en France et politique des arts (architecture et image).

Mystic, language and image - showing the invisible
Montrer l'invisible
Une première journée d’étude promue par le Centre d’Études Médiévales (CEM) de l’université de Genève le 15 avril 2016 investiguait les multiples rapports entre les langages musicaux et l’indicible. Le colloque interdisciplinaire Mystique, langage, image : montrer l’invisible (18/19 oct. 2019) qui se veux sa suite, déplace la perspective aux langages visuels. Que peut apporter l’analyse des représentations littéraires et imagées données dans les récits et dans la littérature mystiques à l’étude des représentations verbales et iconographiques du divin et de l’expérience qui en est faite ? La réponse viendra de l’analyse concrète d’un matériel à rechercher tant dans le patrimoine littéraire que visuel, occidental et oriental. Un premier volet du colloque sera consacré à l'époque médiévale et renaissante, un second aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles.

Conference at Hadrian's Villa
To mark the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the “Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este - Villae” (Tivoli, Rome) is organizing a conference with the theme of: “Leonardo and Antiquity”, at Hadrian’s Villa. At the dawn of the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci visited Villa Adriana, then known as “old Tivoli”. The conference in preparation intends to explore ways in which this journey influenced Leonardo's genius, also in the context of the time period and work of Leonardo's contemporaries and/or disciples. In the company of internationally recognized keynote speakers, the conference welcomes the participation of both Italian and foreign researchers and scholars who answer this call for papers, as a major focus of the conference will be to place Leonardo's trip to Tivoli within a broader cultural context. The deadline for the paper proposals is fixed at January 25th, 2019.

Construction Techniques and Writings on Architecture in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe
Thematic issue of the journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press)
The 2020 issue of the open access journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press) aims to examine, through selected case studies, the complex relationship between construction practices and architectural writings in Renaissance and early modern Europe. Situated at the crossroads of several disciplines (architectural history, history of science and technology, history of literature), the subject can be approached from different perspectives. To begin with, confrontations of texts on construction techniques with the material realities of extant buildings may reveal, for specific contexts, to what extent these texts operated as vehicles for the transmission of technical know-how, and how much weight they gave to topoi borrowed from ancient authors.

First Saint-Omer international colloquium
The first Saint-Omer international colloquium is co-organized by the Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - Université d’Artois), and the Cultural Services of St Omer country’s Urban district (CAPSO). It is part of the pluri-disciplinary research programme The Renaissance in the Northern Provinces, coordinated since 2015 by Pr. Charles Giry-Deloison and Dr. Laurence Baudoux, and is in the continuity of the conferences already held at the University of Artois. The Saint-Omer colloquium aims to address all expressions of the Renaissance in the field of Humanities (philosophy, literature, arts), in the former Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will focus in particular on the exchanges, encounters and bonds between the main actors of this cultural revival.

Aux représentations graphiques et picturales s’ajoutent les sources textuelles qui permettent d’aborder la ville d’une manière plus sélective. On y joindra les récits de voyages et la correspondance diplomatique. Le portrait d’un pays, d’une ville ou de la compagne qui l’environne, c’est aussi celui de ses habitants et de leurs coutumes, de leurs fêtes.

"Aiutando l’arte". Inscriptions in Tridentine decors in Italy
La dépréciation du recours aux inscriptions par la théorie artistique du Cinquecento se voit tempérée lors du Concile de Trente par la volonté ecclésiastique d'un encadrement des pratiques de l'image. Pour comprendre les enjeux et explorer les modalités de cette revalorisation momentanée du rôle didactique de l'écrit au sein de l'image, cette journée d'étude sera consacrée à l’importance, à la place, aux types, aux formes et enfin aux fonctions des inscriptions et écritures qui font retour en nombre dans les décors religieux monumentaux d’Italie pendant la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle et au début du XVIIe siècle.
