Picturing Tomorrow: Future-directed Imagination in American Art
How do we understand the concept of the future? Is it inevitable and shaped by a long sequence of events and interconnected chance occurrences? Or do we conceive of it as something that is determined by our actions and decisions in the present day? Is it a pure potentiality, a promise of a radically different world and yet unimaginable existence? Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to BlackCounter-Representations, from 1945 until Today
The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

"Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s
Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives
Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

Ce numéro d’Études Cinématographiques entend interroger la circulation du concept d’intersectionnalité, sa pertinence et ses limites, dans le champ des études filmiques et médiatiques. En reliant économie du cinéma, cultural studies et approche esthétique, nous souhaitons développer trois angles de réflexion emblématiques de la spécificité du cinéma comme un art, une industrie et un rapport aux différents publics.

Anouk Guiné (université du Havre) et Emanuele Carvalheira de Maupeou (université de Rouen) vous invitent à présenter un texte pour le numéro 10 de la revue EOLLES Identités et Cultures, dans le prolongement du colloque international « Féminismes et artivisme dans les Amériques (XXe et XXIe siècles) ». Nous invitons les auteur·e·s à rendre hommage à Marielle Franco, afroféministe, lesbienne et conseillère municipale de Rio de Janeiro, assassinée le 14 mars 2018, et dont le dernier projet portait sur le funk traditionnel de Rio. Les articles proposés devront être inédits.

Cultures, arts and peripheral literatures in the Americas
A transnational approach to production, circulation and reception
Après une première édition en 2018 à l’université de La Rochelle consacrée à la culture périphérique dans le Brésil contemporain (littérature, cinéma, blog et saraus), cette seconde journée d’études souhaite élargir la réflexion sur les formes d’expression artistique des périphéries à tout le continent américain aux XXe-XXIe siècles. Des voix / voies alternatives et ex-centriques émanent des saraus / tertulias poéticas / poetic gathering, des slams, du street art, des blogs, d’une fiction « marginale » (et marginalisée) et participent à la transformation des récits nationaux. Pouvons-nous donc, dans le cadre de ces mouvements culturels périphériques américains, établir des similitudes tant sur les interrogations que sur les revendications de ces mouvements ? Sont-ils transposables d’un pays à l’autres de la zone Amériques ou bien sont-ils une émanation de réalités différentes des trois aires géographiques ?

Ce colloque s’intéressera à tous ces récits de voyage qui, en faisant un détour par l’étranger et en postulant une identité en mouvement, permettent de réactualiser l’expérience fondatrice du voyage dans la culture américaine, que ces récits émanent d’étrangers ou d’Américains expatriés. Étant donné que ce colloque se place résolument dans une perspective transnationale et souhaite encourager le dialogue entre anglicistes et spécialistes d’autres disciplines, les communications, d’une durée de trente minutes, seront en français.

Après les premières vagues de revendications identitaires du tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, puis de l’entre-deux-guerres, les années 1960 voient la renaissance et la multiplication des mouvements d’affirmation particulariste en Europe comme en Amérique du Nord. Nous nous limiterons ici aux espaces de la francophonie, qui offrent un vaste champ d’études cohérent, mais cela n’empêchera pas – elle sera bien au contraire encouragée – une mise en perspective grâce à l’étude succincte d’autres aires géographiques et civilisationnelles.

This 2016 workshop on contemporary US-UK photography will take on the notion of censorship. With photography as its starting point, this edition aims to extend the debate to include the contemporary image on the whole. It is interested in the intermedial forays of other artistic forms in the practice of photographers (art installations, video and/or audio productions, performance, urban art practices, text/image interactions). How does the very artistic form/medium become in itself a means of expression and commitment when confronted with censorship, a means to create unity against censorship, a tool for identity expression of a group or of a minority, to circumvent constraints, or thrive upon these limits and generate creative impetus from them?

Music criticism in the twentieth century in America and the english-speaking world
Cette journée d’étude viendra clôturer un ensemble de rencontres initiées depuis 2013 sur divers aspects de la critique musicale au vingtième siècle, envisagée d’un point de vue théorique (théories et conceptions de la critique musicale), thématique (figures, genres et formes de la critique), ou par aires linguistiques et culturelles (Allemagne, Italie, monde hispanophone). Il s’agira d’examiner comment certaines des questions générales abordées au cours des précédentes journées d’études se posent aux États-Unis ainsi qu’au Royaume-Uni et éventuellement dans le reste du monde anglophone.

African popular music: the veritable voices of the people?
Perhaps for reasons related to intellectual elitism or simply because of the lack of an effective means of analysis, African popular arts (Modern African music in particular) keep on being pushed to the margins of academic discourse on postcolonial cultural identities. To this day and more than not, in classroom discussions on African culture(s), a place of pride is ascribed to literature (at films at times) despite the high rate of illiteracy and difficulty distributing them, which makes these products utterly inaccessible to the masses. That African writers like Ngugi (Kenya) and Boubacar Boris Diop (Senegal) decide to take their leave from colonial languages on behalf on “penning” their stories in African languages is sometimes hailed as an exceptional way towards cultural affirmation and identity recalibration. In terms of their production and consumption, however, popular musical forms have an absolute impact on African populations. These forms are transfigurations of the people’s daily life experience in that they bring together and crystallize the identities of the musical forms in question more than any other artistic expression.

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

Painting and document : David Diao
Call for Abstracts for the first international colloquium about the New York painter David Diao. Born in 1943, Diao is a major artist of the conceptual painting field. His work is about the history of modern art, architecture and design but also about the complex interactions between autobiography, history, art market… This colloquium will take place in Museum of modern and contemporary art, Strasbourg. Organized by two laboratories of University of Strasbourg and National School of Archiecture of Strasbourg. The colloquium is part of a series of projects with David Diao in Strasbourg for 2014 : artist residence, edition of a work, collective book, colloquium.

Comment l’américanité, réelle ou mythique, accueillante ou exclusive, opère-t-elle en tant que critère d’une recherche identitaire dans la réélaboration constante et l’évolution des visions culturelles de l’Amérique du nord et de l’Amérique latine ?

The Editors of African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal in partnership with the Center for Black Diaspora, DePaul University, announce a Call for Papers on “Sounds of Freedom: Music and Performance Across the Black Atlantic World” for a special issue of journal. The Editors are seeking papers that explore the nexus between music and performance over place and time, showing through myriad examples how music and performance of diverse sites of the African diaspora is critical in the making of the modern Black Atlantic living tradition.

While classical intertextuality has been a widely studied subject and a much-discussed topic in the field of European literary theory, there exist, as of yet, only one-off studies regarding its developments in the “New World”. Although works by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and Jorge Luis Borges have often been analyzed from an intertextuality-oriented perspective, and although several research projects, by focusing on this or that national or regional literature of the Continent, have helped cover sizeable blind spots in literary history, the groundwork has yet to be laid for an overall theoretical approach on the ways in which the Ancient Classics have hitherto been reprised and rewritten in the Americas.

Americanity in contemporary American TV series
Partant du principe que les séries TV participent, en tant qu’art, à la formation de l’identité américaine, notre réflexion aura pour objet d’analyser le rapport complexe que les productions sérielles entretiennent avec la notion d’américanité, autrement dit ce qui est relatif à la culture et à l’identité américaines. L’ouvrage universitaire visé comprendra une sélection d’articles mettant en avant des chercheurs dans différentes disciplines (anglais, lettres, cinéma, philosophie, sociologie…), aussi bien doctorants qu’enseignants, et s’adressera en priorité aux étudiants de premier ou second cycle universitaire de même qu’à tout amateur éclairé de séries télévisées américaines. Les articles pourront être en anglais ou en français.
