Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents
The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

Contemporary Arab World Doctoral Seminar (SMAC)
Le SMAC, qui débutera le mardi 7 octobre 2014 à l'université libre de Bruxelles, est né d’une volonté de rassembler les chercheurs et doctorants travaillant sur le monde arabe contemporain. Cette année, le SMAC a pour thématique « Espaces de pouvoir(s) et espaces de mobilisation(s) ». Ce séminaire a pour ambition d’appréhender, méthodologiquement autant que concrètement, et de manière transversale, un monde arabe en pleine effervescence politique et sociale, de l’Atlantique au Golfe persique.

History of the Jewish People after 1945
Research workshop
Cet atelier se propose d'explorer l'histoire des Juifs en Europe après 1945 et d'en faire un champ autonome, mais non hermétique. Un tel objet se place nécessairement à la croisée des différentes sciences sociales ainsi que de plusieurs approches historiographiques (histoire culturelle, histoire politique, histoire sociale, histoire religieuse, histoire des relations internationales, histoire de l'immigration...). Il suscite une grande diversité de regards, que l'on s'attache à étudier l'histoire des Juifs de l'intérieur du groupe considéré, que l'on adopte une analyse privilégiant le point de vue des acteurs non-juifs sur la collectivité juive, ou encore que l'on cherche à articuler les deux perspectives.

Ce séminaire s’adresse aux aux étudiants en master, aux doctorants, aux collègues enseignants, chercheurs et bibliothécaires intéressés par l’histoire des textes arabes anciens et désireux de s’initier à l’édition, à la traduction et au commentaire des manuscrits médiévaux. Le travail portera cette année sur des extraits inédits de la chronique d’al-Ǧazarī (m. 739/1338). -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi. -

Le Séminaire général, organisé par la direction des « Études médiévales, modernes et arabes » de l'Institut français du Proche-Orient à Damas, rassemble des chercheurs de différentes disciplines (archéologie, histoire, littérature, philosophie,...). Les séances permettent à des jeunes chercheurs mais aussi à des chercheurs confirmés, qui peuvent être extérieurs à l'Ifpo, de présenter l'avancée de leurs travaux.
