Protest and mobilisations in Eastern-Central Europe: actors, registers, methods (from the 19th century to the present day)
Ce séminaire collectif s’inscrit dans une perspective multidisciplinaire (histoire, histoire culturelle, sciences politiques, géographie, sociologie) sur un thème transrégional choisi pour l’année. Sans prérequis de langue, il est ouvert à tous. Les grandes causes sociétales comme la protection de l’environnement, l’égalité des genres ou la lutte contre la corruption, souvent articulées à des contestations du pouvoir politique, ont été investies avec intensité dans les pays de l’Europe médiane au cours des dernières années. Ces mouvements actuels invitent à interroger les formes des contestations et des mobilisations que cet espace a connues depuis le XIXe siècle, dans une perspective renouvelée. En effet, la circulation des acteurs, des registres et des modalités d’engagement conduit à analyser les transformations du politique et la dimension transnationale des mobilisations.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

A New Historiographical Field and its Contribution to the History of Europe
German-Polish history is an innovative and stimulating field in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. We propose to reflect the historiographical and memorial challenges that governed the formation of this field as well as the concepts and methods on which it has since been built. They are now the basis for the dynamics of the field, due in particular to its ability to associate different scales of analysis from the local to the global level. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of Polish-German history and other »bi-national« historiographies like Franco-German history to the project of writing European history especially when it comes to the specific approaches forged or adopted by historians in these fields (transfer, shared history, histoire croisée, connected history, entangled history, Zwischenraum).

The exit from war in Danubian Europe: a new era? (1918-1924)
Using the Hungarian case as a springboard, and broadening the perspective to the whole of Danubian Europe, the conference seeks to address the following questions: the new social bonds emerging from the transformation brought about by the Paris Peace Conference; social, intellectual and (or) regional impact of changes, conflicts and international confrontations between 1918 and 1924. The conference aims to rise to the challenge of writing comparative social histories of this historical moment.

1989 in the East: between order and subversion
Les événements politiques qui se sont déroulés dans l’Est de l’Europe autour de l’année 1989 ont constitué l’un des plus grands bouleversements qu’ait connus le continent européen depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et l’avènement de la guerre froide. Le congrès se propose de revenir sur ces processus qui ont entraîné la désintégration des régimes communistes dans les pays d’Europe centrale et orientale, des Balkans et en URSS. En dépit du nombre considérable de recherches consacrées à la « chute du communisme », on dispose de peu de travaux revenant de façon systématique sur ces transformations en train de se faire, prenant en compte l’ensemble du champ social et le foisonnement qui l’a gagné depuis la deuxième moitié des années 1980. Le congrès entend les explorer en montrant leur hétérogénéité dans les différents pays.

The aim of this event is to bring together established, senior and junior scholars and researchers from a variety of fields and perspectives (Cold War Studies, International relations, foreign policy, political sciences, history, economics, media studies etc.) to foster discussion on East-West contacts, whether they were characterized by conflict, competition, mistrust, trade, cooperation or compromise.

Jan Valtin retrospective (1941-1951)
Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’écrivains dont l’œuvre fut aussi fulgurante et la vie aussi pleine de rebondissements que celle de Jan Valtin. Son premier livre, Out of the Night, s’imposa dès sa sortie comme le plus grand succès de l'édition américaine depuis Gone with the wind (Autant en emporte le vent) ; il fut vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires aux États-Unis, en moins d’un an, et fut plus tard traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Ce récit à couper le souffle de la vie d’un révolutionnaire allemand sous la République de Weimar et la première période du nazisme avait pour mérite d’éclairer la façon dont l’action des communistes contre la social-démocratie en tant qu’ennemi principal avait conduit à l’alliance objective des totalitarismes pour détruire la démocratie bourgeoise.

Dance on the volcano: Istanbul (1918-1923) - a capital under occupation
Une capitale sous occupation
Bien oubliée au milieu du chaos de la première guerre mondiale, l’occupation d'Istanbul / Constantinople, la capitale ottomane, est devenue un mythe dans l’imaginaire turc : première (et unique) reconquête de la capitale de l’Empire et du califat par des troupes étrangères, les quatre années de présence anglo-franco-italienne sont vécues comme une libération par les Grecs de la ville et, dans un premier temps, comme une insupportable humiliation pour les Turcs : assez vite, plusieurs groupes se détachent, les nouveaux riches collaborateurs qui profitent de la liberté d’une ville franche, une majorité d’habitants qui s’accommodent de la présence étrangère mais pas des privations qui s’installent et les partisans de la révolte en Anatolie, les Kémalistes. Malgré des conditions difficiles, Istanbul connaît une immense activité journalistique, sociale et culturelle marquée par une liberté que permet cette atmosphère de guerre et de fin du monde.

Criticisms of democracy, authoritarianism and populism in Europe
Continuities and disruptions from the inter-war period until today
Facing the feeling of »crisis« of democracy arising in recent years and symbolized by the rise of populist movements, there is a recurrent comparison with the inter-war situation in today’s political debate in many European countries. Is this comparison relevant to understand the specific democratic practices during both periods? Building on this question, the workshop serves as kick-off for the research program Which democracy/democracies? Reflections on the crisis, modernization and limits of democracy in Germany, France, England and Central Europe between 1919 and 1939 supported by the Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA).

The Humanitarian - a new research field for history in Europe
Research workshop
Dans le cadre de la venue de Johannes Paulmann, directeur de l’Institut Leibniz d’histoire européenne à Mayence (IEG), comme professeur invité, le laboratoire d'excellence (labex) « Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe » (EHNE) organise le séminaire Migrations et mobilités en Europe, XIXe-XXe siècles. Ce cycle se termine le mercredi 13 juin par l’atelier L’humanitaire : nouveau champ de recherche pour une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe, qui réunit le LabEx EHNE, l'IEG, le laboratoire TEMOS (université d'Angers) et le Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/Leiden University). Les participants présenteront des travaux et des programmes de recherche sur la thématique.

The implementation of France’s commitment in Central and Eastern Europe in the interwar period (1917-1939)
The aim of this conference is to shed light on joint practical initiatives between France and all the allied countries of central Europe during the inter-war period to concretely build the alliance between the partners. France’s collaboration with the member states of the Little Entente (Czechoslovakia, Romania, Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes) — and of these powers amongst themselves — will be emphasized, but communications on the ties with the other Allied Powers or partners from the region (Poland, the Baltic States and Finland, Greece, Turkey), and even with the revisionist powers (Soviet Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria) are welcome.

Mouvements de populations en Europe centrale et orientale au XXème siècle
En donnant la parole aux historiens, la table ronde vise à faire la lumière sur les différentes formes de solidarité, émergées dans le contexte des mouvements de populations au XXème siècle dans la région de l’Europe centrale et orientale sur le plan communautaire, étatique et international. À partir d’études de cas précis, il s’agira dans le cadre de cette table ronde d’allier analyse historique à l’étude empirique du contemporain. Comment ces expériences, souvent étroitement liées à leurs contextes particuliers et à leurs cadres régionaux, peuvent-elles être observées aujourd’hui et servir de ressources pour l’étude plus générale de la question des migrations ?

Divided memories, shared memories: Poland, Russia, Ukraine
History mirrored in literature and cinema
In Central and Eastern European countries, memorial questions appeared right after the demise of the communist regimes in 1989–1991, revealing long-denied processes. The phenomenon of the rise of repressed memories along with the rewriting of history, and the political uses of the past are noticeable in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, three countries whose histories are as often shared as their memories are divided. The “memory wars” in which these three states have sometimes been engaged since the end of the 1980s have been the subject of an abundant historiography.

Children’s Culture in USSR, 1917-1941
Objects, places and practices
Le présent colloque inaugure une série de rencontres internationales et interdisciplinaires consacrées à la culture enfantine en URSS (1917-1941). Il s’agit d’étudier les objets culturels créés pour et/ou par les enfants et relevant de la culture littéraire, textuelle, musicale, matérielle (comme les jouets), visuelle (illustration, imagerie murale fixe et mobile) et spectaculaire (cinéma, théâtre d’ombres et de marionnettes). Nous situerons ces objets dans leurs conditions de création, diffusion, réception et appropriation, et les comprendrons dans leurs dimensions pratiques et réflexives.

Après le centenaire de la révolution russe, 2018 est celui de la mort des empires continentaux, dont seul l'empire russe s'est reconstitué, avant de disparaître en 1991. Ces ateliers seront consacrés aux multiples reconfigurations qui ont accompagné son éclatement, recomposition, disparition. Dans une perspective comparative, seront examinées les relations de conflit et de dépendance, de désintégration et réintégration, de circulation volontaire ou forcée des populations, qui ont structuré cet espace.

We would like to render the Russian revolution in its ambiguity between the event itself, medium-term social and economic transformations, and a long-term reconfiguration of the spaces of power and politics.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.
