Mobilisation of the youth in Ethiopian small urban settements
Ph.D fund CNRS/EHESS
The project aims to analyse social and spatial entrenchment of the recent political mobilisation in Ethiopia. By documenting the multifaced and continuously evolving contestation shaking the country, it addresses an unprecedent social and academic need.Mostly based on top-down analysis, existing works pay less attention to dissent's local and material dimensions. Territories are conceived as institutionally produced by an ethno-federal system that promotes some of them or leads to territorial disputes. On the contrary, rather mundane territorial patterns daily framing lives of millions of Ethiopians remain unknown. This project aims to disclose them, by considering that ordinary life also impacts political mobilisation.

Reconnue d'utilité publique (FRUP), elle porte la volonté de la Croix-Rouge française de promouvoir la réflexion scientifique, la réflexion éthique et l'innovation sociale pour faire avancer l'action au service des plus vulnérables. La fondation a pour objectif de mobiliser la communauté scientifique à proximité des populations en souffrance, au Nord comme au Sud, pour apporter des réponses concrètes et durables. Dans cette optique, elle finance et accompagne des chercheurs indépendants, en priorité issus des terrains d'intervention, par l'attribution de bourses postdoctorales en sciences humaines et sociales.

The project “Gangs, Gangsters, and Ganglands: Towards a Global Comparative Ethnography” (GANGS) aims to develop a systematic comparative investigation of global gang dynamics, to better understand why they emerge, how they evolve over time, whether they are associated with particular urban configurations, how and why individuals join gangs, and what impact this has on their potential futures. It draws on ethnographic research carried out in Nicaragua, South Africa, and France, adopting an explicitly tripartite focus on “Gangs”, “Gangsters”, and “Ganglands” in order to better explore the interplay between group, individual, and contextual factors. The first will consider the organisational dynamics of gangs, the second will focus on individual gang members and their trajectories before, during, and after their involvement in a gang, while the third will reflect on the contexts within which gangs emerge and evolve.

Call for researchers at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (2016-2017)
Ethnographe, cinéaste et photographe, élève de Jean Rouch, Rina Sherman a vécu entre 1997 et 2004 au sein d’une communauté ovahimba d’Afrique australe (Namibie et Angola). Lors de son séjour, elle a filmé, photographié et écrit sur la vie quotidienne et rituelle des Ovahimba et d’autres communautés dites de langue otjiherero. De cette étude, elle a rapporté des centaines d’heures de vidéo et de sons et des milliers de photographies, ainsi que des notes et des dessins, qu’elle a donnés à la BnF en 2014.

Ce Prix, géré par la Fondation MSH, récompense un programme de terrain de recherche d’un doctorant préparant une thèse en ethnologie africaine dans un établissement d’enseignement supérieur français, qu’il soit de nationalité française ou étrangère. Ce prix permet d’effectuer un travail de terrain en Afrique – si possible en Afrique de l’Ouest – portant sur les thématiques d’ethnologie « classique » (systèmes de parenté, organisation sociale, tradition orale) et de rédiger sa thèse dans les meilleures conditions.
