  Narrative folklore in becoming: persistance and innovations

  In a comparative perspective on the very long distance, the conference invites specialists in the field of Alpine narrative, western, central and eastern, to discuss with their colleagues who work on the Pyrenees and the Himalayas, via the Corsica, the Apennines or the Balkans. The main aim is to draw up new reflections on the evolution of these narrative practices and to understand their changing, profoundly heterogeneous, but at the same time universal.

  Feeding death - funerary rituals and alimentary practices in the Alpes and Himalayas

  Les pratiques et les gestes funéraires constituent une prérogative uniquement humaine depuis au moins 100.000, datation attribuée par les archéologues aux sépultures de Skhül (Mugharet es-Skhül), en Moyen Orient, les plus anciens exemples de sépulture volontaire de l’espèce des Homo Sapiens. Les récentes découvertes archéologiques des équipes dirigées par Aldenderfer et Eng (2016) dans le Upper Mustang (Népal) ont mis en évidence des aperçus inédits de l’histoire des populations himalayennes de haute altitude et de leurs rituels de la mort. Ce colloque permettra aussi d’aborder des aspects secondaires inhérents les rituels funéraires tels que certaines pratiques alimentaires spécifiques, appelées à jouer un rôle précis sur le plan social et symbolique.

  Of animals and men. Shared heritage, and futures to be built

  Colloquim on the modernity of human/animal relationships

  Ce colloque invite à une réflexion historique, philosophique et anthropologique sur la pluralité des relations que notre société entretient avec les animaux. Il interrogera également les pratiques pour mieux pouvoir imaginer notre devenir commun. Aujourd’hui un débat s’est engagé sur la façon de percevoir, classer, aimer, utiliser, travailler avec les animaux. Depuis l’animal (être singulier et abstrait des animalistes), aux animaux (êtres vivants avec qui nous, êtres humains entretenons des relations multiples et millénaires), il y a une différence notable. D’un point de vue culturel on observe aussi certaines remises en cause de notre modèle alimentaire et de notre régime omnivore avec l’abandon de toutes les nourritures d’origine animale et il nous semble important d'en analyser les fondements.

  Islam and Regional Cultures in Pakistan

  CEIAS conference

  With the hope of throwing new light on the transformations of Pakistani society, this one-day conference intends to move the focus away from two dominant discourses on Pakistan : that is, on the one hand, the security discourse of political and media circles that reduces Pakistan to a state on the fringe of failure, trying to cope with radical Islam and terrorism; and, on the other hand, Pakistan’s official nationalism, which rests on a unitary conception of the nation that disregards the cultural and religious diversity of the country, stressing instead Islam and Urdu as national unifiers while relegating regional cultures to folklore. This conference hopes to partly fill this gap by inviting participants to illustrate the complex, lived experience of Islam in Pakistan, the identity component of religious practices that do not fit in the dominant norm, and their inscription in local political and ethnic relations. Papers would ideally use first-hand observation and/or analyses of cultural productions to examine circumscribed case studies.

  The Ile de France perspective

  À l’occasion de la promulgation de la loi sur la sécurité alimentaire le 10 septembre 2013 , par le Président de la République indienne, l’association France-Union Indienne organise, grâce à un financement de la région Île-de-France,  un colloque international sur la sécurité alimentaire en Inde, le 15 novembre 2013, au Centre Sèvres, Paris, en association avec la Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme. L’objectif de ce colloque est d’éclairer un enjeu décisif, et reconnu comme tel par le gouvernement indien, en éclairant l’articulation entre politiques sociales et politiques de modernisation dans un pays qui compte aujourd’hui 1,2 milliard d’habitants et qui devrait devenir, d’ici quinze à vingt ans, le plus peuplé de la planète. L'AFUI a réuni les plus grands spécialistes, chercheurs, entrepreneurs, décideurs et journaliste pour en débattre.

  Tamil and Tamil Akam at the Crossroads

  The objective of the conference is to examine Tamil Nadu as an example of a geographical space where multiple cultures met, exchanged, and absorbed from outside, while Tamil maintained until recent times its unique ancient traditions. To bring together an international cadre of scholars who work in diverse disciplines that focus on a single region is to create new knowledge as is the way of any innovative conference. The fourteen scholars participating in the event bring a range of disciplinary perspectives to the idea of Tamil and Tamil Akam as a crossroads of cultures and a locus of international exchange in both the arts and sciences.
